Summary
GROUP TOUR (FOR AGES 18-39): Explore Mexico, Guatemala, Belize, and Costa Rica on this 40-day tour, starting in Mexico City with its Aztec heritage, and moving through Oaxaca's markets and mezcal distilleries. Journey through Sumidero Canyon and San Cristobal de las Casas, then visit Isla Holbox's beaches and Mayan sites like Chichen Itza and Tulum. Continue to Bacalar's lagoon, Belize's reefs, and Caye Caulker for snorkelling, before experiencing Mayan cooking in Guatemala and exploring Tikal and the Candelaria Caves. Embark on a 4x4 adventure into the highlands, followed by a hike and swim in blue pools, with a traditional Mayan lunch. Visit Chichicastenango and Panajachel by Lake Atitlán, then take a boat to San Marcos and San Juan La Laguna. Hike Mayan Face Mountain at sunrise, then trek Acatenango volcano before heading to Costa Rica. Itinerary
Day 1
Welcome to Mexico City!
Upon arrival in Mexico City, you will be met and transferred to the hotel. You will have the rest of the day at leisure to relax or explore at your own pace. Later, you will have the opportunity to join the group for a welcome dinner.
Please note: This tour is designed for younger travellers looking for a backpacker-style experience and to meet like-minded people. The average age on this tour is around 21 - 35, and we are unfortunately unable to take any travellers over the age of 39. Day 2
Mexico City Exploartion
Today, we set off on a city tour of the historic centre of Mexico City. During our journey, we will explore the fascinating history of the Aztec Empire, learning about its rise, culture, and eventual fall at the hands of the Spanish conquistadors giving us a deeper understanding of this city's history and culture. We will also visit renowned landmarks such as the Metropolitan Cathedral and the Zócalo. This evening, we will come together to enjoy a traditional Mexican dinner accompanied by a cultural performance.
Day 3
Mexico City to Oaxaca
Mexico City - Oaxaca. After breakfast, we will say goodbye to the city and set off for the charming town of Puebla, where we will delve into its rich history. After enjoying lunch, we will journey onwards to the renowned city of Oaxaca, where we will take an evening stroll and explore its enchanting streets under the moonlight.
Day 4
Markets & Local Life
Today, we will wander through the vibrant markets and fully immerse ourselves in the lively local atmosphere of Oaxaca. This evening, we will savour a selection of traditional dishes, including memelas, mole, and empanadas.
Day 5
Oaxaca to Tehuantepec
Oaxaca - Tehuantepec. After breakfast, we journey into the valleys to visit a local family and witness the age-old craft of hand-weaving textiles, from natural dyeing to intricate loom work. Next, we explore a traditional mezcal distillery, discovering the time-honoured process behind this smoky spirit. As the day unfolds, we travel to Tehuantepec, where we will spend the night.
Day 6
Boat Tour & San Cristobal de las Casas
Tehuantepec - San Cristobal de las Casas. Today, we'll hop on a boat to explore some of Mexico's natural wonders. As we navigate through the Sumidero Canyon, we'll encounter cascading waterfalls and lush jungle, and we might even spot some monkeys and lurking crocodiles.
Later, we'll ascend into the mountains to visit our next destination, the charming colonial town of San Cristobal de las Casas. We will enjoy a brief walking tour and you can join an optional pottery class, if you wish.
Day 7
Zinacantan & San Juan Chamula
San Cristobal de las Casas - Zinacantan - San Juan Chamula - San Cristobal de las Casas. We'll visit a local family in the charming small town of Zinacantan. Afterwards, we'll proceed to San Juan Chamula to explore and visit its unique church, before returning to San Cristobal de las Casas. You'll have time to explore this city with its cobblestone streets, local markets, beautiful churches, and the renowned Chiapas coffee at your own leisure. You can also try Pox, a traditional local drink.
Day 8
Flight to Cancun
San Cristobal de las Casas - Cancun. Today, after departing from the beautiful San Cristobal, we are taking a flight directly to the vibrant city of Cancun. Located on the Yucatán Peninsula, Cancun is where we will immerse ourselves in the Caribbean atmosphere and indulge in luxurious experiences. Once we have arrived in Cancun, You will have the rest of the day at leisure.
Day 9
Isla Holbox at Leisure
Cancun - Isla Holbox. This morning, we're taking a ferry to Isla Holbox, often referred to as paradise! Picture sunny beaches, crystal-clear waters, vibrant marine life, and relaxed villages. you will have the opportunity to immerse yourself in the island atmosphere, enjoy local cuisine, watch the sunset, and dance to tropical music at a beach bar beneath the stars.
Day 10
Boat Tour of Isla Holbox
Today, we’re set to explore the incredible Isla Holbox by a boat tour. Our adventure includes spotting pink flamingos, visiting hidden island oases, and exploring a local cenote. The afternoon is free for you to relax in a hammock or further explore. In the evening, we will enjoy a BBQ dinner on the beach.
Day 11
Playa del Carmen at Leisure
Isla Holbox - Playa del Carmen. Today, our Mexican adventure takes us back to the sun-drenched landscapes of the Yucatán. Upon arriving in Playa del Carmen, we settle into our hotel, with the rest of the day free to soak up the lively coastal atmosphere. Whether it’s unwinding on the soft, white sands, sipping cocktails at a beachside bar, or indulging in freshly made tacos, the vibrant spirit of this seaside paradise awaits.
Day 12
Chichen Itza
Today, we are exploring one of the New Seven Wonders of the World, Chichen Itza. Accompanied by a local guide, we’ll uncover the captivating myths and extraordinary sights of these ancient ruins, including the iconic Temple of Kukulkan, also known as ‘El Castillo,’ the haunting Platform of the Skulls, and the expansive Plaza of a Thousand Columns.
Afterwards, get ready to take a dip in the crystal-clear waters of a stunning cenote, a remarkable natural limestone swimming spot hidden underground.
Day 13
Tulum Day Trip
Playa del Carmen - Tulum - Playa del Carmen. This morning, we're off to the beautiful town of Tulum. You can explore the fascinating Tulum Ruins, an ancient Mayan site perched on cliffs overlooking the Caribbean, or relax at Tulum Beach, where you can enjoy the crystal-clear waters and soft white sands.
Afterwards, back in Playa, it’s time for you to enjoy dinner and drinks. You’ll savour fresh dishes, including creamy avocado, and treat yourself to a tequila shot or two. It’s the perfect way to unwind and end a memorable day!
Day 14
Bacalar Boat Trip
Playa del Carmen - Bacalar. This morning, after breakfast, we will set off by bus, heading south through the Yucatán Peninsula. Our destination is Bacalar, known as the Lagoon of Seven Colours, for its stunning and vibrant lagoon.
Once we have arrived, we’ll embark on a relaxing boat ride, allowing you to fully soak in the beauty of the lagoon. As the boat glides across the tranquil waters, you’ll have the chance to take a refreshing dip in the crystal-clear lagoon and perhaps raise a toast to the experience with a cold beer.
Day 15
Bacalar to Caye Caulker, Belize
Bacalar - Caye Caulker (Belize). Today, we continue our journey south as we cross into Belize, known for hosting the world’s second-largest barrier reef and embodying a vibrant Caribbean culture, Belize serves as our gateway to island life. We’ll catch a brief ferry ride after breakfast to Caye Caulker, where our hotel is conveniently located just a minute from the beach.
After dropping off your bags, you can head straight to the pristine white sands for some free time. Later, we’ll meet up to enjoy the sunset on the island’s opposite side, where stingrays swim right between your legs.
Day 16
Snorkelling the Barrier Reef
This morning, we embark on a boat journey to the stunning Hol Chan Marine Reserve, renowned for its diverse marine life, where we will enjoy a snorkelling trip. Along the way, we’ll make a few stops along the barrier reef, you will be able to step into the warm water to reveal a kaleidoscope of colours, fish darting around you, coral reefs teem with life, and rays glide calmly below. as we make our way to the last stop, you might even have the opportunity to see some manatees, known as "sea cows".
For dinner, you’ll savour delectable Caribbean cuisine, featuring the freshest fish paired with a Caribbean curry sauce.
Day 17
Caye Caulker at Leisure
Today, you will have the opportunity to enjoy Caye Caulker at your own pace, taking in the Carribean lifestyle with the day free for you to relax. You can spend time at the beach, try paddle boarding, snorkel in the pristine waters, or simply unwind in a hammock soaking in the sun and local reggae music. Alternatively, you can venture to the famous "Split," a natural channel formed by a hurricane, which divides the island and creates a popular spot for swimming and relaxing.
Day 18
Mayan cooking class & Flores, Guatemala
Caye Caulker - Flores (Guatemala). After breakfast, we will depart from Caye Caulker, as we travel further south we will pass through small towns and roadside stalls that will give us a glimpse into the local lifestyle.
Along the way, we will make a stop at a Mayan village for lunch, giving us a view of the ancient culture and traditions. Here, we will enjoy a cooking lesson with locals, giving us an insight into the Mayan Heritage. After our cooking lesson, we will continue our journey, crossing the border on our way to Flores. Once we have arrived in the small Island of Flores, we will check into our hotel.
Day 19
Ancient Tikal Exploration
This morning, we will prepare to unleash our inner Indiana Jones as we journey back thousands of years. Nestled deep within the northern jungles of Guatemala lies a vast archaeological site of Tikal, one of the largest remnants of the pre-Columbian Maya civilization.
The highlights of the day include the towering Lost World (Mundo Perdido) Pyramid and the iconic Temple of the Grand Jaguar, offering us an immersive experience as we walk in the footsteps of an ancient and mysterious civilisation. Our knowledgeable local guide will accompany us, vividly bringing the history of this captivating world to life.
Day 20
Candelaria Caves & Coban
Flores - Coban. After breakfast, we will discover how big Guatemala is as we drive south making our way to Coban. Along the way, we will make a stop at the Candelariia Caves an 80km long cave system, which plays a significant role in Mayan culture as it is believed to be the entrance to the underworld.
After our cave exploration, we will continue our journey to Coban, a colourful city surrounded by mountains.
Day 21
4x4 Journey, Hike & Mayan lunch
This morning, a convoy of 4x4s will take us on an authentic journey into the highlands. Prepare for an exhilarating ride as we traverse the winding mountain roads, surrounded by breathtaking vistas on both sides.
As we explore these rugged terrains, our adventure continues with a hike for the final stretch into the jungle. There, we'll find a stunning bright blue river meandering through the mountains, cascading into a series of beautiful pools bordered by vivid, light green algae.
We'll have a couple of hours to relax in these invigorating pools, soaking up the sun and leisurely drifting along the river on rubber rings. Our day will culminate with a visit to a traditional Mayan home where we'll enjoy an authentic lunch.
Day 22
Chichicastenango & Panajachel
Coban - Panajachel. This morning, we proceed on our journey south through the highlands, stopping in the vibrant town of Chichicastenango. Known to house the indigenous Mayan traditions. On market days, it features one of the largest local markets in Central America.
Our next destination is Panajachel, where we will spend the night. Panajachel is located adjacent to the famous Lake Atitlán. With the gentle lapping of the lake's waters against the shore and the breathtaking views of the surrounding towering volcanoes, you'll certainly want to pause and appreciate the beauty of this extraordinary location.
Day 23
Boat Journey to San Marcos & San Juan La Laguna
Panajachel - San Juan La Laguna. For many residents around Lake Atitlan, the quickest way to travel and run errands between towns is by crossing the lake in local boats. Naturally, we’ll follow their example, as the views from the water are truly breathtaking. Our first stop is the charming town of San Marcos, famous for its laid-back, bohemian atmosphere and its peaceful nature reserve by the water, ideal for a refreshing swim.
Next, we’ll head to San Juan La Laguna, where we’ll stay overnight in a local homestay with Mayan families. During a traditional dinner, we’ll have the chance to learn some Mayan phrases and practice our Spanish.
Day 24
Moonlit Hike & Antigua
San Juan La Laguna - Antigua. Today, we're beginning early with a moonlit hike to the summit of Mayan Face Mountain, known for its unique silhouette that resembles a face when viewed from below. The true beauty awaits at the top, where the sunrise reveals the stunning vista of Lake Atitlán. Our local guides will enhance this unforgettable experience by serving us hot cocoa. Once we descend, we'll have breakfast with our local families, say our goodbyes, and set off for Antigua.
Day 25
Antigua at Leisure
Today you can take advantage of some well-deserved free time to explore the charming colonial town of Antigua, a favorite among tourists and locals alike. With its breathtaking Spanish architecture from the churches to local markets, delightful cafés serving freshly brewed Guatemalan coffee and huevos rancheros, cozy restaurants, and parks there's plenty to enjoy.
Day 26
Volcano hike in Acatenango
Antigua - Acatenango. After breakfast, we will get our hiking boots ready for an exhilarating hike. We will embark on a 7-hour hike up taking us through serene forests, and then making our way through rocky terrain, as the hike starts to get steeper our local guide will give us more insight into the region.
When the sun sets, we will reach our campsite for the night near the summit above the clouds. As the night falls, we will be mesmerized by the stars that fill the sky and the active volcano Fuego, with its lava bursting from the crate, known as the "Fire Volcano".
Please note: The overnight hike up Acatenango is a challenging 7-hour ascent with steep, rugged terrain, requiring good fitness, warm layers, proper footwear, and travel insurance covering hikes up to 4,000 metres. It’s an epic adventure, but if you prefer not to take part, we offer alternative accommodation and a traditional chocolate-making experience in Antigua. Please let us know at the time of booking.
Day 27
Trek back to Antigua
Acatenango - Antigua. This morning, we will have an early start hiking to the summit for a panoramic view of the surrounding area. We will then start our descent, making our way down the volcano back to Antigua.
Once we have arrived back in Antigua, we'll have some time to freshen up. You will have some time to further explore the streets of Antigua, checking out any sights you might have missed before.
Day 28
Antigua to San Jose, Costa Rica
Antigua - San Jose (Costa Rica). After breakfast, we will depart for the airport for our included flight to San Jose, Costa Rica. Depending on the flight time, you may have some free time to explore San Jose at your leisure before dinner.
Please note: Some members of the group may be leaving the tour in Antigua, whilst new travellers will start their adventure in San Jose.
Day 29
San Jose & La Fortuna
San Jose - La Fortuna. Today, we explore Costa Rica's capital, San Jose on a walking tour of the city. Our local guide will showcase the fascinating architecture and historical landmarks at every turn. Afterward, we'll depart the city and head to La Fortuna, making a stop at the Ox Cart Museum along the route. These intricately decorated carts were crucial to Costa Rican farm life and have become a national emblem.
Upon reaching La Fortuna, the entry point to Costa Rica's breathtaking wilderness, it's impossible to miss the towering Arenal Volcano that dominates the landscape. Once primarily a farming community, this delightful town is now famous for its geothermal activity and wellness retreats tucked away in the jungle. It's time to embrace the pura vida spirit!
Day 30
Hanging Bridges & Arenal Volcano
Today we'll head into the rainforest, crossing a network of hanging bridges above the jungle treetops. Keep your eyes peeled for monkeys, colourful toucans and slow-moving sloths as we explore. We should get a decent view of the Arenal Volcano too. As evening descends and the sun sets, a different world of wildlife comes to life. We’ll venture into the jungle after dark to uncover its nocturnal wonders, guided safely by an enthusiastic expert who will point out the creatures we come across, potentially rare frogs, monkeys, reptiles and even tapirs.
Day 31
Traditional Casado Lunch & Hotsprings
Today is our final day in La Fortuna, and we begin with a visit to a local family, who have lived in La Fortuna for generations. They will guide us around their farm, where we might observe some of the wildlife that shares their home. You'll learn about the harvesting of local fruits and vegetables and have the opportunity to taste some exceptionally sweet fruits. We'll tuck into a traditional Casado lunch, paired with freshly brewed coffee from their own farm. This afternoon, you'll have the chance to relax in natural hot springs, celebrated for their healing properties due to the volcanic mineral waters.
Day 32
Rio Celeste National Park & Rincon de la Vieja
La Fortuna - Rio Celeste National Park - Rincon de la Vieja. Leaving La Fortuna, our first stop today is at a traditional Maleku house. The Maleku are one of Costa Rica's indigenous groups, and this visit provides a unique opportunity to learn about their traditional lifestyle.
Next, we make our way into Rio Celeste National Park. The park is most well-known for the colour of its water (and waterfall) - a stunning diamond blue hue.
In the afternoon, we’ll reach Rincon de la Vieja, and can settle into our jungle accommodation, surrounded by the sounds of the wild.
Day 33
Rincon de la Vieja Hike
Get ready for an adventure in Rincon de la Vieja National Park, where the jungle trails are a great place to take in some of Costa Rica's incredible biodiversity. In the morning, we'll hike through the park, exploring volcanic vents and mud pits, and encountering its diverse wildlife, which includes over 300 bird species, as well as monkeys, tapirs, reptiles, and possibly even a jaguar - you're more likely to hear the coughing roar of the big cats than you are to spot one.
In the afternoon, you can unwind by the hotel pool, enjoying the calming sounds of the jungle. Alternatively, there's the option to zipline through the forest canopy, gliding above the misty treetops and descending into the mountains.
Day 34
Onwards to Samara
Rincon de la Vieja - Samara. We continue our journey towards Samara, a laid-back coastal town known for its palm-fringed beaches and calm waters. As we arrive, you can start to unwind and enjoy the relaxed pace of life. Spend the afternoon as you please - whether that’s playing beach volleyball, soaking up the sun, or sipping cocktails by the sea.
Day 35
Beach Day & Surf Lesson
We’ll start the day with an unforgettable surf lesson, learning to ride the waves alongside local experts who know these waters inside out. Whether you're trying it for the first time or already confident on a board, this is a great opportunity to immerse yourself in Costa Rica’s vibrant surf culture.
Later, we travel up the coast to one of Guanacaste’s quieter white-sand beaches. With sun-drenched skies and swaying palms, this hidden spot offers a peaceful break from the busier tourist areas. You can unwind with a book, take a swim in the calm sea, or join a friendly game of football – however you like to enjoy the beach, the choice is yours.We’ll start the day with an unforgettable surf lesson, learning to ride the waves alongside local experts who know these waters inside out. Day 36
Samara at Leisure
Today is completely free for you to explore everything Samara has in store, or to do absolutely nothing - it's up to you. Whether you're interested in a calming yoga session or something more adventurous like a surf lesson or sea kayaking with snorkelling, there's something for everyone. Alternatively, relaxing by the sea with a cold drink and soaking up the sun is always a great choice.
Day 37
Samara to Esterillos
Samara - Esterillos. We’ll spend our final morning in Samara soaking up the sun. In the afternoon, we head south to Esterillos, with a stop at the famous Crocodile Bridge - a perfect spot to see these fascinating prehistoric reptiles in their natural habitat. As we continue, we’ll pause for dinner, enjoying the scenic drive and sunset views. We arrive in the evening, check into our hotel, and you’ll have time to relax before another day of exploring Costa Rica’s beautiful coastline.
Day 38
Manuel Antonio National Park
Esterillos - Manuel Antionio National Park - Esterillos. Today, we are visiting the breathtaking Manuel Antonio National Park, so make sure your camera is at the ready! As Costa Rica's most visited national park, you'll soon see why during our exploration of its jungles and beautiful beaches. Be on the lookout for wildlife, such as the beloved sloths. After our jungle adventure, we'll make our way to the park’s stunning beaches for some sun and relaxation. Keep an eye out for the playful monkeys that inhabit this tropical sanctuary with us. We head back to Esterillos for the night.
Day 39
Crocs & San Jose
Esterillos - San Jose. Leaving the coast behind, we make our way back to San José. En route, we stop for a hands-on cultural experience - cacao making. We’ll learn about the significance of the cacao tree in Costa Rican history and, naturally, sample some freshly made chocolate. This evening, we’ll come together for a farewell meal and drinks, raising a glass to an unforgettable adventure in Costa Rica. Pura Vida!
Day 40
Adios San Jose
Our tour comes to an end today. You can depart this morning, making your own way to the airport or your next destination. Although there is no departure transfer included, your tour leader will be available to help you plan your onward travel and is on hand to assist you. Safe travels!
