Yes, that's a dramatic statement but if you have never seen animals like Zebra, Lion and Giraffe in the wild before it will take your breath away when you're up close.

The Masai Mara is of course host to The Great Migration which is a natural phenomenon occurring every year as great herds migrate from the Serengeti to the grassy plains of the Masai. This experience offers some of the most iconic images of wildlife which will be familiar to you from the inspiring David Attenborough documentaries.

The Masai Mara reserve is rare in that the habitat hosts the big five where as most reserves cannot boast the same attribute.

The big five are:

1. Lion

2. Cape Buffalo

3. African Elephant

4. Leopard

5. Rhinoceros

You're most likely to see the top three above although even that might be tricky. The final two, the Leopard and Rhino though are much rarer partly because they're good at hiding and partly because there are far fewer. Good luck!

There is no 'bad' time! to visit the Masai Mara however there are certain months of the year which may offer some different experiences.

You may want to time your visit with The Great Migration which timing can change every year but is often during the dry season which runs from June to October. 

We'd also suggest considering the wet season. Visitors are much fewer but of course all oft he wildlife is still there! You'll also experience the lush greens of the plains - quite different to the arid environment during he dry season. You may also get the chance to see new borns - a magical experience.

Only March and April have a lot of wet weather so maybe avoid those months.

The short answer is yes you will see wildlife. On any tour you're with a very experienced guide who knows where to go, when to go and has intimate knowledge about particular animal groups. It's also worth knowing that all guides communicate frequently and so share information about what is happening in the park, this helps make sure any visit is the best it can be.

However, it is always worth having front of mind that you're seeing wild animals. There is no script. They may decide to hide however unlikely. Whilst it is almost certain you'll see lots of wildlife you should at least consider the possibility that you might not see as much as you'd like.

Not much but we'd say a camera, a hat, sun cream, sunglasses and more sun cream. These are the essentials for your time out in the park and not to be forgotten!

You need a visa to enter Kenya. You can either get a visa on arrival at the airport, or before you travel. However, from 1 January 2021, Kenyan entry visas will be exclusively issued electronically, with passengers required to obtain their e-visas before departure. You can apply for single entry and transit visas on the e-visas website, and until 1 January 2021 at Kenya’s High Commission in London.

The short answer is yes. Adding a week or so in Mombasa or Zanzibar is very common and a great idea. After a week or two on safari and maybe camping (!) a week on the beach in the sun with a little bit of luxury is very appealing!
