Walk The Path Of The Gods
The famous Path Of The Gods along the Amalfi Coast is one of the most famous coastlines in the world along the province of Salerno in Southern Italy and is a UNESCO world heritage site. The coastline is of course beautiful with it's steep shoreline leaving little room for any high rises or large architectural developments. As a result of the geography the coastline is what you might call 'unspoilt', dotted with small villages and harbours.
There are wonderful walks and walking holidays along the coast, each night stopping at a new hotel or boutique bed and breakfast. The views are breathtaking and the food, well, as you will already know the food in Italy is wonderful.
One of the most famous is 'The Path of The Gods' an old trade route which is now a hiking route offering spectacular views of Amalfi and Capri, an island just off the coast.
Amalfi itself is about halfway along the coast.
As well as walking the Amalfi Coast some can use two wheels and cycle the route too.
When To Travel
We'd suggest the best time to visit the Amalfi Coast and surrounding area is between April and October. The months of April, May and early June, September and October are a little cooler with fewer tourists. The weather is good but of course there may be some rain sometimes.
July and August are hotter, it can become very hot, and usually much busier primarily because many Europeans holiday at this time and will drive over but also schools are closed across Europe for summer, as a result many families holiday here but they mainly stick to areas like Sorrento.
Just a quick note form me, Chris, the CEO - When I visited the Amalfi Coast a few years ago in June it was HOT! We did though have a huge rain storm one afternoon which I think can be common, I remember vividly as we were on a ferry coming back from a visit to Capri. The rain didn't last long and soon everything was back to normal.
Getting There
We'd recommend flying into Naples and hopping in a taxi or getting the train to where our start point may be. Getting to Naples within Europe is very easy with so many low cost airlines offering good prices and frequent flying. If arriving from further afield then you may need to hop on an internal flight from Rome or your arrival airport.
Taxis are plentiful at Naples airport but you may consider pre-booking a taxi transfer. This can be a little more expensive than hailing a taxi down at the airport but it is very convenient as you'd be met on arrival and whisked away.
Walk The Amalfi Coast
The Path Of The Gods is the famous Alamfi coast hiking and trekking route. At 7.8km long it begins in Bomerano which lies around 1km east of Positano. From there the trail takes you on a journey discovering ancient Lore of the gods and how travel and indeed life was conducted many moons ago during the 19th century.
The path itself is not paved, it is a track, can be bumpy and has hand rails at parts. The path will take you through small villages in between the spectacular views where you can stop for a bite to eat or drink.
Towards the end, depending what route you take, you descend down 1,500 steps into Arienzo. The descent is steep but also offers incredible views. Upon reaching the bottom you'll be rewarded with a beautiful village and somewhere to relax!
Here is a map of the route:
The Surrounding Area
The area surrounding the Amalfi coast is very rich in sites and experiences. To name a few:
1. Mount Vesuvius - the now dormant volcano which you can trek to the summit (or take a bus) offering wonderful views.
2. Pompeii and Herculaneum - two amazing sites which preserved what life was like as Vesuvius erupted on August 24 79CE.
3. The Island of Capri - lying just off the coast near Sorrento, this small island has been home to the rich and famous.
4. Naples - one of Italy's most iconic cities, we highly recommend the local cafes along the back streets for pizza.
5.Positano - a day here is a day well spent, both browsing the local shops and enjoying the cafes whilst spending some time on the beach too.
There is of course an awful lot more to see and experience but we think these are the highlights.
Who Will Be On My Trip?
Many of our trips don’t have a max or minimum age, for adults, at all and travellers will be a variety of ages. In fact, we get lots of feedback saying that people had a fantastic time meeting fellow travellers of various ages and from all different walks of life. It is a really special part of the adventure.
If you are looking to go with younger teenagers then some of our operators are happy to take this on a case by case basis for 12-18 year olds - just get in touch!
Once you have an idea of the tour and date that you would like to do, we can get in touch with the relevant operator and find out some more information on the demographic of fellow travellers. We won’t be able to give specifics but can often give you a good idea of the makeup of your group.
There are some tours that are specifically geared towards younger travellers - 18-29 year olds and others that have a higher average age.
Accommodation
Your accommodation will of course vary by tour but typically you can expect 3 to 4 star hotels or an agriturismo, a boutique accommodation with a focus on wonderful food.
Some of our adventures though are 'local living' or 'homestays' for either the entire or part of your stay in Italy. The accommodation here is of course local family accommodation and is not a 3 star hotel! In these cases you should expect that it will be just like anyone's home. The huge advantage is that you will experience local life, you'll be immersed and enjoy real local food. This isn't for everyone but if you fancy an adventure then maybe take a look.
Food
We often get asked what food to expect. In Italy you're really spoiled for choice. The first item to note is that vegetarian and vegan diets are well catered for.
You can expect a lot of pasta and pizza of course but also more local dishes, plenty of fish, octopus and squid with lemon. Fresh bread, tomatoes, mozzarella and olives, plenty of white wine (if you like). We could write for a very, very long time about the food here but in reality, the quality is very good, you won't go short, best to dive in and enjoy!
Tailor Made & Private Tours
If you can't quite find something that's right for you it is possible to build a tailor made itinerary for you. All you need to do is contact us with some details of you'd like and when and we'll get back to you with a full quote.
You should be aware it is likely this may have a higher price than the group tours because some costs that would be shared across a group will not be able to be reduced, for example the guide (if you wanted a guide).
You can of course call is on the number at the top of this page or email us on hello@theadventurepeople.com. Finally, you are also able to send your query to us via our Contact Uspage, please click hereto access this page.
