High Altitude Treks
One of our favourite ways to experience any region is to slow down and see it on foot. It is one of the best ways to explore the world and we have a huge range of trekking tours, from iconic treks such as Kilimanjaro, The Inca Trail and Everest Base Camp to the lesser-known Kumano Kudo Trail in Japan and Snowman Trek in Bhutan
We’ve got walking, hiking and trekking adventures to suit everyone, from first-time trekkers to the most experienced among you looking for a longer technical challenge. Each trip on our site has a physical rating so you can search for one that is right for you. Our team of travel experts are also here to answer any queries or concerns.
And if you want to mix up your adventures, a number of our trips are made up of a combination of activities, including trekking and cycling, trekking and kayaking and many more combinations. These multi-activity tours are great if you are looking for variety or are booking a longer trip.
What Is A High Altitude Trek?
Technically a high altitude trek is one which surpasses 2,500 meters above sea level (this is 8,000 feet!). At The Adventure People we have a lot of treks which meet this criteria including the really famous Everest Base Camp and Inca Trail. If you're trekking at altitude for any length of time it's worth considering checking how fit and able you are, not for fear of Altitude sickness which can affect anyone but just the physical demands of trekking in an environment where oxygen levels are reduced. The higher you go, the less oxygen and the harder the trekking will feel.
What Do I Need To take With Me?
For each trek we'll provide a packing list in the brochure which can be downloaded from the website. Typically with high altitude treks you'll need good walking shoes, layers of clothing and a good waterproof as well as sunglasses, sun cream and a hat. One of the difficulties of trekking in the mountains is that the weather can be changeable and can go from sun to rain very quickly. It's for this reason you need to pack so you're covered in all conditions.
On almost all treks you have support so you will not be carrying all of your gear, rather it will be taken ahead each day to your camp or tea house. On any given day you'll be carrying a day pack but do check the tour notes and itinerary to make sure!
While we remember, one item not to forget is your camera.
Are High Altitude Treks Dangerous?
Any trek can be dangerous. Trekking in high altitude can carry more dangers primarily as a result of altitude sickness being a factor and the fact the weather can change so quickly. All of our high altitude treks are guided. This means that your small group will have a full time guide along with Sherpa to support you. Trekking should be an exciting and memorable experience. All of our operators have your safety front of mind and minimise any danger and risk where ever possible. Common sense is of course required and listening to your guide, they are experts in what they do!
How Fit Do I Have To Be?
This really does depend on the length, difficulty and the altitude of the trek you are planning. For all easy and moderate treks, like The Camino de Santiago we suggest you head out for some long walks before your trip.
If you have new boots then we also highly recommend wearing them for at least one long walk ahead of the trip, trust us, your feet will thank you! Stretching is really important and both before and during your trek.
For the more challenging treks like The Inca Trail it’s worth ramping up the training, - the more prepared you are the more enjoyable you will find it. We’d suggest adding in some aerobic exercises and strength training to your regime. Another good tip is to practice with your day pack so you’re already comfortable carrying it when you are away.
If you are tackling some of the more advanced treks we offer - like Everest Base Camp you can expect tricky terrain, high altitudes and changeable weather. Why not book a UK break and try Hiking the 14 Peaks of Snowdonia. It’s a great training ground and a challenge in its own right!
Trekking at Altitude (3000 metres above sea level or more)
It’s hard to know how this will affect you - as it can have an impact on travellers regardless of age, prior experience at altitude or fitness level. It certainly takes a couple of days to get used to the altitude so definitely take the time to do so. Ask our team if you are unsure how to add this in to your trip, but most include this in the itinerary.
Most people will experience some symptoms of altitude but as long as you are well prepared, you will get aclimitise in a few days and have a great time. Make sure you drink lots of water, take your time, listen to your body and let your leader know if you are feeling unwell. All leaders trekking at altitude are full trained in recognising the symptoms of rare, but more serious conditions that can arise at altitude.
If you have any concerns or are worried about medical conditions you should speak to your GP before travelling. We strongly recommend against buying medications that are available over the counter in some destinations without previously speaking to your GP.
