Mont Blanc Trekking & Holidays

Standing high in the Alps, Europe’s highest peak Mont Blanc looks over France, Italy and Switzerland. This high altitude trek is one of the most famous and rewarding.  Follow the route through Europe's most dramatic scenery encountering plenty of native wildlife along the way.

One of the oldest trekking routes in the world Mont Blanc is a must-do for many adventurers. The route’s origins come from shepherds that moved cattle through the mountains, and it can be traced as far back as Romans who used the pass to traverse Europe. You can still see remnants of the Romans to this day, including a footbridge along the route.

Most of the tours we offer take you through France, Italy and Switzerland, taking you through lively towns lower down, through to remote villages and then the final ascent where you will have some friendly wildlife for company. Along the way, you will get to enjoy friendly hospitality and fresh, simple and local cuisine, subtly different in each of the countries you pass through.

  • When To Go To Mont Blanc

The ideal time to trek Mont Blanc is in the summer, somewhere between late June and September. This gives you the best chance of good (sometimes very hot!) weather and more mild nights. Of course, weather can be unpredictable so bring a waterproof and some warm layers as well.

Earlier weather will be cooler with a greater chance of rain and even snow as it settles at high altitudes much of the year. Your views will still be incredible, with the snow-covered peaks your backdrop each day. You will definitely need warmer layers if you are travelling then.

  • Getting To Mont Blanc

The treks usually start in Chamonix - a lively ski resort with great bars and restaurants. You can easily spend a day or two there one either side of your tour if your flights allow.

You can fly into Grenoble or Geneva, both have lots of flights throughout the year, and are very affordable from the UK and Europe. If you are coming from further afield, Geneva is an international hub so you should find plenty of options. It’s worth looking on Skyscanner for the different options.

Many of our providers can offer a transfer from the airport to the starting point of the tour, just ask our experts what the options are for the trips you are interested in. There are also regular buses and coaches that you can book a seat on that will take you up to the ski resorts including Chamonix. It takes about an hour.

  • Am I Fit Enough?

Mt Blanc is certainly a challenging trek. It requires good fitness levels and practice walks and hikes will certainly make it easier for you. However, this is not a technical climb and it remains very accessible for most people who have put the training in beforehand. Plus, there are various routes with different levels of difficulty so we are confident we can find a trip that suits you. As long as you are in reasonable shape, it is a great starting trek for many.

Some travellers may experience altitude sickness It has nothing to do with experience, fitness levels or age and can affect everyone differently. The tour leaders are all very experienced and will be trained in how to deal with this.

  • How much walking do we do each day?

It depends on the tour, and distances vary each day according to the altitude and the terrain. Expect to walk between 4 and 6 hours a day and about 12km. There will be accents and descents of around 1000m most days.

You will also encounter different terrain as you hike, as the scenery changes. As you get higher the distances you cover will decrease but you will still be walking a number of hours so make sure you are well prepared. On summit day you will reach 2,537m! Some of the longer tours also take in a couple of days acclimatising to the altitude which will help you a lot. Some tours also offer a bus option to shorten some of the days, again ask our experts for more information.

  • What Equipment Will I Need?

You don’t need specialist equipment, but some basics will really help you be comfortable and safe.

You will need sturdy, breathable and comfortable shoes or boots. Definitely wear them in before you get there, using them on your practice walks or hikes and make sure they won’t hurt or cause blisters. Bring lots of thick socks too! If you use poles for trekking you may wish to bring them, or you can hire them locally.

Breathable layers and thermals for the evenings are a good idea. Temperatures can drop substantially at night and even some days depending on the time of year.

Also bring sun cream, sunglasses and a hat. The sun will be very strong and you will need as much protection as possible from it.

These are just some of the suggestions to give you an idea of what to expect, if you would like more information, we have full packing lists and information of equipment that will help you prepare for the trek. For more information check out our Packing List for trekking.

If you forget anything, don’t worry as you can buy or hire lots of extra bits before you set off. Just be aware that it may be considerably more expensive as the Alps are pricey!

  • Who Will Be On My Trip?

Many of our trips don’t have a max or minimum age, for adults, at all and travellers will be a variety of ages. In fact, we get lots of feedback saying that people had a fantastic time meeting fellow travellers of various ages and from all different walks of life. It is a really special part of the trek.

If you are looking to go with younger teenagers then some of our operators are happy to take this on a case by case basis for 12-18 year olds - just get in touch!

Once you have an idea of the tour and date that you would like to do, we can get in touch with the relevant operator and find out some more information on the demographic of fellow travellers. We won’t be able to give specifics but can often give you a good idea of the makeup of your group.

There are some tours that are specifically geared towards younger travellers - 18-29 year olds and others that have a higher average age.

  • Accommodation

It really depends on the tour. Some will stay at family-run hotels for nine nights and some use auberge - hostel-style accommodation and as you climb higher you may stay in huts along the route. For the more intrepid trekker, we offer some tours with accommodation in mountain refuges - the most authentic but basic experience!

Please have a chat with our experts if you have a specific idea of the accommodation level you are looking for as they will be able to advise what tours are most suited. After all that walking each day, you will be guaranteed a good sleep each night for sure - just try not to get carried away drinking genepi!

  • About Mont Blanc

Mont Blanc is Europe's highest peak standing tall at 4,808.7 meters above sea level. At such height the peak is always covered in snow. Mont Blanc translates as 'white mountain' or 'white peak'.

Mont blanc lends it's name to the Mont Blanc Massif which is the surrounding area and is very popular for trekking, camping, kayaking and general outdoor activity. The Massif forms part of the Graian Alps which sit in the western part of the Alps.

Mont Blanc boarders France and Italy and is the 11th highest peak in the world.

Around 20,000 people per year reach the summit. It is considered technically easy but challenging ascent. The altitude makes this trek harder than most and we'd certainly recommend some training beforehand.

No climbing experience is required to attempt the reach the summit as trekking routes take you all the way but it can be steep and the again, we can't stress enough: the altitude!

Climate change might be having an impact on Mont Blanc. In recent years some routes to the summit have been blocked as crevasse fields have been left open due to little ice coverage. There have also ben incidents of rockfall. The local authorities have no hesitation in closing routes if they believe any external danger is present.

  • The Mont Blanc Ultra Trail

The Mont Blanc Ultra Trail race takes place in August, usually the last two weeks, every year. Racers make their way around the Tour du Mont Blanc route in just a matter of days.  If you're planning on travelling in August it might be an idea just to check crowds and people expected.
