Tanzania Tours

If it’s not already, then Tanzania is a destination that should be high up on your bucket list. The largest country in East Africa with around 30% of its entire land being National Parks, there’s plenty to see. The scenery alone is reason enough to visit, from 1,000 year old Baobab trees, to the second largest lake in the world; Lake Tanganyika, and then to the famous Ngorongoro crater, which is one of the best places in the world to see the Big 5.

Serengeti National Park is arguably the best thing to see whilst in Tanzania. It is also a UNESCO world heritage site and is over 5,700 square miles and is the oldest ecosystem on the planet. How does a hot air balloon ride over this vast area sound? Spot the African Elephants, Buffalo, Hyena’s, Giraffes and everything in between. If you want a trip with even more safari-ing why not include the amazing Masai Mara too?

Many visitors like to come during the ‘Great Migration’ which happens each year between June and October. It’s where millions of animals travel up to 500 miles from the Serengeti to Masai Mara National Reserve, crossing the Mara River and whilst trying to avoid predators. It’s a photographer's dream capturing this incredible event, especially as it’s the only place in the world this still takes place to this extent.

Whether it be for a holiday or to add on at the end of your incredible Tanzania trip, then Zanzibar is a destination for everyone. The home of beautiful beaches, pristine tropical waters and incredible history, it really is like all the photos you see online! The rich coral reefs and huge array of fish means that it’s the ideal spot for divers and snorkelers alike. It would certainly be well deserved after a trek up Kilimanjaro.

  • Which Kilimanjaro Climb is best for me?

    ·        Marangu Route – This is also known as the ‘Coca Cola’ Route. It is the oldest and most well known route to the peak of Kilimanjaro. It’s also the only route that has huts along the trek. Due to the ascent and descent being the same path it can be a little busier than some of the others, but still has beautiful scenery.

    ·        Shira Route – The Shire Route starts at a higher point than all of the other trips, already at 3600m up. This is a great option for people who have previously some similar climbs and don’t need as much time acclimatising. This is definitely for the more experienced trekker.

    ·        Rongai Route – The Rongai Route is the only route that approaches the trek from the north of the mountain. It then joins the Marangu route at Kibo camp and descends back down with the Marangu route too. During the rainy season, this is probably the best route to do as it’s more sheltered than most. Also, it tends to be one of the quieter and less travelled paths.

    ·        Machame Route – This option is also known as the ‘Whisky’ route. In terms of acclimatisation this is the best trek as 3 of the camps are at the same altitude, giving your body much needed time to get used to the altitude. The views on this trip are probably the best, it gives you clear views of the 5 ecosystems on the mountain (farmland, cloud forest, alpine heath, high desert and glaciated summit), this is most likely why it’s the most popular route.

    ·        Northern Circuit Route – This is the newest route on Kilimanjaro, it’s also the longest route. Generally it will be the quietest trip due to it not being as well known and the length it takes, meaning you’ll see a lot of remote areas throughout the climb. As it’s the longest trip, trekkers are more likely to be successful.

    ·        Lemosho Route – Last but not least is the Lemosho route, this starts on the west of the mountain and merges with the Machame route at the Shira Plateau. Being a day longer, there is less chance of altitude sickness, whilst still giving you very similar incredible views to that of the Machame route.

We also have a full page on Kilimanjaro which has so much more information, you can see that - HERE.

  • How can I get there?

A lot of trips that go through Eastern Africa including Tanzania will actually start in Kenya. Flying into Nairobi is super easy, you can fly direct with a number of airlines or indirect with just shortstops with some great airlines.

If your trip starts in Tanzania then there are a number of airports e.g. Kilimanjaro Airport, Arusha, Moshi, Zanzibar and Dar Es Salaam. Each is accessible with usually just 1 stop. Flying with many different airlines such as Emirates, Qatar, Etihad, Turkish Airlines, Kenyan Airways etc.

Tickets usually start around £480 but need to be booked as far in advance as possible to avoid getting the lowest cost.

  • When's the best time to go?

The peak season to visit Tanzania is in June to September. This is the best time to see wildlife, but due to the season, it does mean that it’s a busier time of year too. The least busy time is March to May, however there is a chance of heavy rainfall during this time. There is also a short rainy season in November.

If you are planning on climbing Kilimanjaro, June is a good time, with decent weather and fewer crowds than the summer months.

  • Do I need a visa?

At the time of writing this British travellers need an e-visa to travel to Tanzania. It’s very easy to get and will just connect to your passport. Things can change often so we suggest checking this in advance and shortly before you depart just in case.

If you are travelling on a British passport then please check the FCO website for the most up to date information, you can access that HERE. You can also sign up to receive emails when there’s been any changes.

Also, if you are travelling on another passport, we recommend you checking your government website for information about visas.

  • How should I budget for my trip?

The currency in Tanzania is the Tanzanian shilling. It’s always best to have cash with you, but ATMs are also widespread. Credit cards are not always accepted but Visa more so than anything else.

Due to the incredible activities you can take part in in Tanzania, it can seem to be more expensive. We suggest checking what activities are included in your trip. There will be other optional activities you can add in too, if you can’t find costs for this in our tour brochures then let us know and we can let you know costs.

This will give you a better idea of what to budget for your amazing trip to Tanzania.

    How much things cost:

    Local Beer - 2,500 TSh / 80p

    Coke/Pepsi - 1,415 TSh / 45p

    Cheap Meal - 7,000 TSh / £2.30

  • Is it safe there?

The vast majority of trips are trouble free, but as with any trip it’s important to be vigilant and take any regular precaution. The British Government recommends to:

    • Use a hotel safe for your valuables if possible

    • Minimise the items you carry with you. If you carry a bag, make sure the strap is over your shoulder, away from the road to deter thieves on motorbikes from snatching it

    • take extra care at night and in isolated areas

    • be particularly vigilant travelling at night by bicycle or motorcycle, especially if you’re alone. Stick to well-used, well-lit roads and carry a personal alarm if possible

    • avoid placing bags in the front basket of bicycles

    • be wary of pickpockets, especially on public transport and in crowded areas

You can keep up to date with this information on the FCO website - HERE.

    The emergency number is 112.

  • Do I need any vaccinations?

Some vaccinations may be required pending where you are going, when and what you’re doing. Standard and correct advice is to check with your GP or NHS travel clinic before travelling as they’ll have the up to date information.

If you are climbing Kilimanjaro you may experience Altitude sickness. It has nothing to do with experience, fitness levels or age and can affect everyone differently. Some of the routes are longer than others and will give you more time to acclimatize. If you have struggled with altitude sickness before we definitely suggest taking one of the longer options.
