Explore Africa with a guided small group adventure holiday
Africa is a continent of extremes, and our small-group tours are built to get you into all of them. Track the Big Five on a guided safari through the Serengeti and Maasai Mara. Or head deep into the forests of Uganda to come face-to-face with mountain gorillas.
Trek to the roof of the continent on Kilimanjaro's Machame or Marangu routes, or take on a shorter but no less rewarding climb up Morocco's Mount Toubkal, North Africa's highest peak.
Cross whole countries overland, connecting Kenya down to South Africa through Zambia, Zimbabwe and Botswana, with wildlife encounters, local guides and genuine cultural immersion built into every leg.
And for travellers who want to go further off the beaten track, our growing range of West Africa adventures opens up a part of the continent still largely overlooked by mainstream tourism.
Every trip is led by expert local guides, kept to small group sizes, and designed to balance adventure with comfort — whether that's a multi-day trek, a camping safari, or an overland route through several countries in one trip. All flights are ATOL protected, and we back every booking with our Best Price Promise.
What type of Africa adventure is right for me?
It depends on what you want from the trip. Choose a wildlife safari (Kenya, Tanzania, South Africa) if seeing the Big Five is the priority. Choose a trek (Kilimanjaro or Toubkal) if you want a physical challenge with a summit at the end. Choose an overland trip if you want to cover more ground and experience several countries — and cultures — in one journey. If you're after somewhere less travelled, our West Africa tours are the newest addition to the range.
Do I need to be very fit to climb Kilimanjaro or Toubkal?
Kilimanjaro is a multi-day trek at high altitude, so a good base level of fitness and some hiking experience are recommended — no technical climbing skills are needed, but the altitude is the real challenge. Toubkal is a shorter climb (our Imlil and Azzaden routes run from 2 to 4 days) and is achievable for most reasonably active people. Full fitness guidance is listed on each tour page.
What's the best time of year to visit Africa for a safari?
This varies by country and season, and depends on things like the Great Migration, dry vs wet season, and which national parks you're visiting. Check the "best time to go" information on the country page, as timing can make a real difference to what you'll see.
How does an overland trip work?
Overland trips move you by road between countries — for example Kenya through to South Africa — usually in a specially designed vehicle, stopping at national parks, towns and campsites along the way. It's a great way to see a lot of a region without repeatedly flying, and you'll get a broader sense of the landscapes and cultures in between the well-known highlights.
Do I need a visa or vaccinations for Africa?
Requirements vary significantly by country and by your nationality, so we can't give one blanket answer here. We recommend checking the latest guidance from the UK Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office and your GP or a travel clinic well ahead of departure, and our team can point you to country-specific information for your trip.
Are your Africa tours suitable for solo travellers?
Yes — most of our Africa trips run in small groups and are popular with solo travellers, particularly our treks and overland routes. You'll be travelling with a mixed group of fellow adventurers, not on your own.
What's included in the price?
This varies by tour, so always check the itinerary and inclusions on the individual tour page. As a guide, our treks typically include guides, permits and camping/lodge accommodation; overland trips include transport, a tour leader and most accommodation. Flights can be added separately with ATOL protection.
Can I combine a safari with a trek or overland trip?
Many travellers do combine a Kilimanjaro climb with a Tanzania safari, or add a few days in Zanzibar at the end of an overland route. Get in touch with our team and we can help recommend the best tour for you.
