Croatia Island Hopping Holidays
Can you imagine lying on a boat, sailing from island to island whilst enjoying a cocktail in the sun? Here is your chance to forget imagining and enjoy first hand!. We have lots of island hopping holidays in Croatia which take you along the magnificent Dalmatian coast.
Most of our Croatia island hopping holidays see you on board a boat. Don't worry! you're not expecting to be able to sail and there is a crew to get you from A to B, all you ned to worry about is relaxing:) The boast typically sleep up to 10 people. Couples will share a cabin and solo travellers will be paired within someone of the same gender (and close age) to share with.
Each day you'll sail from island to island where you can hop off, explore, take a trek, go for a swim, enjoy food and much more. You'll be in a small group but also enjoy lots of free time. Take a look at the adventures below and please do contact us if you'd like to find out more.
Island Hopping - The Basics
Our sailing adventures in Croatia take you island hopping along the Dalmatian coast. On each adventure you'll have a guide and a hand who will look after you on board and sail from point to point. If you've never been sailing before that's fine! you're not expected to take part in sailing but if you'd like to learn you can help along the way.
On board you'll be able to relax, enjoy the views, the food and even go swimming and snorkelling conditions allowing.
Typically trips start from either Split and head south to end in Dubrovnik or start in Dubrovnik and head north to end in Split. You'll take in various islands along the way where you'll be able to disembark and explore.
The Islands
Of course, there are far too many Croatian islands to write about (over 1,200!) but here are some of the highlights you're likely to visit:
Hvar
Probably the most famous of the Dalmatia islands due it's nightlife, cafes and bars and of course people watching. Although a favorite with the jet set and celebrities don't let that put you off. Hvar has some gems to offer and is well worth some time exploring. We'd recommend climbing the fort, checking out Dubovica beach and some wine tasting!
Korcula
Also known as 'little Dubrovnik' due it's old town and similar architecture. Korcula island is also known as The Black Island, this is due to the forests which are dense and sprawl across inland areas. Like Hvar there are hidden beaches and lots of walks to enjoy. Korcula is maybe most famous for speculation that this was the birth place of Marco Polo.
Brac
The largest of the islands in the Dalmatia, Brac is more traditional than the glamour of Hvar and is populated with small fishing villages nd local restaurants. There are plenty of trekking routes in Brac, one of the most famous is to the peak of Vidova Gora which is a 7 mile round trip taking you to a altitude of 700 meters. You don't need a map for this hike, the trail is very well marked and easy to follow. Remember your hat, sungalsses, sun block and water:) Oh, and your camera, don't want to miss those views!
Vis
If you've seen the film Mama Mia II (hmmmm) then you're familiar with Vis. It is a beautiful island and one of the smaller islands on the Dalmatia.
Mljet
Be careful, you might fall in love with this island. It's maybe the most beautiful due to the greenery and the fact not many people visit, it really is like a hidden gem. There is a national park at the western end which is well worth visiting.
Getting There
Getting to Croatia has never been easier. You can fly to Dubrovnik, Hvar, Split and Pula in just two and a half hours or less from London. British Airways and Easyjet offer daily flights to Dubrovnik and frequent flights throughout the week to other destinations. You can also fly with Ryanair, Norwegian, or Jet2 which offer flights several times a week from most main London airports, Manchester, Birmingham and Glasgow. As a result of the number of flights, prices are kept relatively low, at around £200 return at the time of writing. Of course, you find deals a lot cheaper if you book far in advance.
Once you are in the country, the best way to get around is often buses or ferries. Taxis can be expensive so watch out for that. Places like Split, Rijeka, Zadar, and Dubrovnik have reliable and reasonable buses and Zagreb has an extensive network of electric trams.
If your tour starts on an island, or anywhere really that isn’t one of the main cities, most of the tours will include a transfer from the airport via van, boat or ferry. If you can't find your flights on our website please do call our team and we can help find the right flights for you.
When To Go
Croatia’s busiest season is June-August. You can expect temperatures to be very hot, often reaching mid 30s. All the restaurants will be open and busy so it’s really up to what you prefer and the activities you wish to do - bear in mind that the beaches and restaurants will be much busier and prices might be hiked up too.
Temperatures are a bit lower in May and September, and because it’s not during school summer holidays, there are less tourists during this time. Keep in mind though that since it’s not “peak season”, some restaurants and shops might be closed. If you are thinking of a more active adventure - like cycling, you might want to think about travelling when it is cooler. If you are thinking about a sailing trip, September can be great as the sea is nicely warmed up - perfect for jumping (or falling!) in.Visas
If you’re a UK or EU citizen then you do not (at the time of writing) require a Visa to enter Croatia for up to 90 days, this is known as a visa exemption. If you’re a US citizen then you also don’t need a visa but both nationalities need a valid passport and a return ticket. You may need to show your return ticket upon arrival and / or complete a landing card upon arrival. UK citizens if you’re staying longer than 90 days then you’ll need to apply for a visa before travelling. If you overstay you may be fined and / or detained so it’s not worth the risk!
As always we recommend checking the latest country entry requirements with your national foreign travel office, for UK citizens this is the Foreign Travel Advice section of www.gov.co.uk,Money
The local currency in Croatia is Kuna. It’s not as cheap as the country once was, but still cheaper than in many other parts of Europe. Unfortunately during the summer, the prices are much higher than the rest of the year and this can’t really be avoided. At the time of writing, there are around 8.5 Kuna to £1 GBP.
If you’d like to check the exchange rate please visit xe.com, it’s what we use all the time.
ATMs are widely available, even on the islands, but most restaurants and shops accept credit cards.Safety
Croatia is considered to be one of the safest countries on earth. Of course as with any destination you should keep your belongings close to you and beware of pick pockets.
The guides are there to help you, always listen to their safety advice.
Remember to always use common sense and take any travel precautions you normally would.
The emergency number is 112.Health
Some vaccinations may be required pending where you are going, when and what you’re doing. Standard and correct advice is to check with your GP before travelling as they’ll have the up to date information.
Of course, goes without saying we’d advise taking out travel insurance before travelling.Helpful Information
The main religion in Croatia is Catholic. If you are visiting churches you may be asked to cover your shoulders and knees but outside of that, there are no dress codes that you need to adhere to.
Not only is Croatian tap water safe to drink it is also one of the cleanest in the world.
English is widely spoken especially in any tourist areas and the guides all speak English too of course.
Tipping is always appreciated, you’ll know when. We would note, if you’re taking pictures of locals, especially in the tribal areas its courteous to ask permission and maybe give a donation.
We recommend trying ALL THE FOOD you can!
We try to ensure we work with the BEST local companies but remember, if you’re on a trip and don’t feel like an activity or continuing, you can stop. You don’t need to do anything you don’t want to!Our guided adventures will take you to places well off the beaten track and provide experiences that most people just won’t get, with that in mind we encourage you to check out our growing selection!
