The Darvasa Crater
This spectacular crater of fire has been burning since 1971 in the Karakum desert and when night falls can be seen for miles around. So what is it? Well, the crater started life as a Russian drilling project which by accident when into a natural gas chamber. The ground collapsed and the drill fell in with poisonous gasses coming out. To stem the poison gas the Russian party thought the best way to solve the problem was to set the hole alight thinking it would take a few weeks and then fade away. 50 years later (as we writ this), the burning continues.
Getting There
In normal times one can fly to Turkmenistan through it's international airport, Ashgabat accessible for all major INTL airports. Alternatively one can drive overland via a neighbouring country.
Is It Safe?
Turkmenistan has very few tourists so it's very difficult to give an opinion as we just don't have much data to go. Domestically Turkmenistan state there is no crime - we can of course take this with a pinch of salt as crime exists everywhere however, so long as one follows the local law and culture then chances are you'd be fine. We note, our tours all have guides who are experienced and can navigate the local laws and culture. Travelling alone of course holds more risk.
Money
The local currency is the Manat, introduced in 1991 to replace the Russian Ruble. Cash machines are not so common so we'd advice a reasonable level of cash in hand.
