Tanzania Safari Adventures
Going on safari is so exciting!! Whether you are looking at a once in a lifetime luxury trip, basic camping or maybe you are a seasoned safari expert looking for something a little different. There is no better way to get up close (but not too close) to the incredible wildlife and see animals in their natural surroundings. Even the scenery is amazing and so varied, you might go through forests, deserts, wide plains and steep ravines, all adding to the excitement and sense of adventure. Really getting to understand the whole natural ecosystem of your destination in huge national parks or protected spaces really is an unforgettable experience.
The Big 5 - can you name them? - Lions, leopards, rhinos, elephants and buffalo are the most famous residents that you will be looking for and a famous checklist for safari’s in East Africa in particular. The true joy of a safari comes from getting to know a whole range of birds, animals big and small, insects and plants and a lot more about how they all survive in their environment.
It’s also worth bearing in mind that we offer a number of tours where safari is only part of the adventure. Our most popular combo tours are in Tanzania where you can climb Kilimanjaro before safari, or for a much more relaxing option, spend some time on the spectacular white beaches of Zanzibar. This can be a great way to get a taster as a part of a different holiday. Please as our adventure experts for their recommendations on different tour options.
Where should I go on safari?
While the most famous locations for safari have been Tanzania and South Africa, there are many more countries that offer unique experiences and often fewer other visitors. Some of the most popular alternatives are in Botswana and Kenya, as well as tours that cross a number of countries. All offer something a little bit different so if you’re not sure where to start just get in touch. The parks along the border of Kenya and Tanzania are world renowned for the annual wildebeest migration and large number of big predatory mammals but are also some of the busiest.
They are great for a first safari experience. If you treasure the feeling of wilderness, then maybe a quieter option might appeal. There is a huge range of options across Africa (and beyond) and it’s hard to know where to start, but we are here to help. Some parks are renowned for large populations of particular mammals, so if one in particular holds a special appeal then bear that in mind when choosing.
What does a typical day on safari look like?
Usually the animals are more active in the mornings and evenings, that’s when you have the best chance of seeing them. You will likely have an early morning drive, before breakfast, trying to spot the animals when it is cooler and big predators are most likely to be on the hunt.
Then during the hotter, middle part of the day you will be back at camp relaxing and having lunch. If you are staying in lodges or serviced campsites then you will have some time to chill in often incredible locations with plenty of options to see some wildlife from camp itself. You will typically head out again in the early afternoon, just as the sun sets to try your luck and with the wildlife again. This is just your typical day and does vary depending on the habitat you are visiting, the time of year, and the type of animals most commonly seen. In larger, more remote parks it is common to head to rivers or water holes in the middle of the day to find a larger number of animals as they congregate to drink. Your drivers and guide will have a wealth of experience and knowledge in the area and will choose the best times to view.
Evenings will be spent in the camp, relaxing with a beer and chatting. Sitting around a fire looking at the stars, listening to the night sounds of the bush and going over what you have seen that day with new friends is one of the greatest ways to end a day. It’s often a good idea to get an early night as you will often have an early start in the morning, either on a game drive or heading to your next location.
Family Trips
Safari can be a great family holiday, and a great way to introduce little ones to adventure travel. We have a great selection of family trips that you can browse here >>. They all include family-friendly accommodation options like triple rooms and more comfortable hotels and lodges. The itineraries are created with families in mind so that the trip remains accessible and enjoyable for everyone. They are only available to groups with children so you know the atmosphere will be family-friendly too.
Accommodation
We have a huge selection of safari trips with a range of accommodation types depending on the type of experience you would like and your budget.
Camping
This is the most basic way to go safari and you will really be close to wildlife. On the camping safari trips, everyone will be expected to help out around the camp, with the setup, cooking, and chores. Many people love this collaborative way of travel and it is a brilliant way to get to know your fellow travellers. A minority of basic camping trips are serviced, meaning your tents will be set up for you and most cooking done. This is done by a fab team if you are travelling from place to place or you may use established sites along the way. Still pretty basic but heavy lifting involves picking up a beer! These trips are very budget friendly and a great way to experience safari for a little less.
Fixed Camps
Many safari trips that involve camps are actually in fixed tents, which are actually fairly luxurious. Obviously, you won’t have air conditioning or luxury jacuzzis but they will have ensuite bathrooms, proper beds and often a very high level of service and some pretty spectacular settings. And all lovely meals at dining tables with a serviced bar.
Lodges and B&Bs
If you don’t fancy sleeping under canvas then many trips involve lodge accommodation - some simple and some decadent enough for a really special trip.
What will the transport be like?
Our operators use all sorts of vehicles. The traditional open jeep safari is what many people will recognise and these are of course a great way to see the animals and the scenery. Each jeep’s driver will generally also be an experienced wildlife guide, an expert in spotting and identifying animals and birds.
There are also trips using large overland vehicles that will carry all your camping gear throughout the safari and be used as the base camp throughout the trip. Many safari trips also include - River safaris are often the best way to see wildlife during the day as many animals head to the banks for water during the midday heat. Some trips offer walking safaris as well, which is a great way to really slow down and see the small things you miss in a jeep. Ask our experts for more information.
Who will be on my trip?
We have a huge variety of ages for our tours and often we hear that the best part of many people’s trip was meeting and spending time with people they otherwise have not met. The age range can go from people in their 20s to over 80, and of course, we have family tours too. If you would like to know more about the people on a trip you are interested in, you can ask one of our team and we will try to find out some info for you.
For some people, part of the experience is being with travellers of a similar age so we have a selection of trips that are designed for the under 40s. These are often more basic accommodation to help keep costs down, Again, we can help recommend the best trip for you.
What shall I bring with me?
You all know the traditional safari look! Think khakis, maybe some camouflage gear...and if that’s what you are comfortable in, then great! They are not essential to be on a safari through - neutral colours are useful if you have walking safaris included but while you are in vehicles we would just suggest comfortable clothing, with long sleeves and trousers for sundowners and an extra layer in the evenings and for early mornings. A hat is recommended as the sun can be really strong, and the same goes for sunscreen. A reusable water bottle is great to reduce waste where refills are offered.
Some completely optional things to take:
There are some great region specific books around with comprehensive information and images of the fauna you may find there. Great for those of you that like to checklists off but also good to help you remember what you have seen every day. It’s lovely to look over every evening. Collins range is particularly popular.
It goes without saying that a camera with a good zoom would be great, but equally, many phones have great cameras or you could just take it in and enjoy the experience!
Binoculars are really good to have. You don’t have to go wild with the most expensive pair but you won’t regret the ability to have a closer look at everything you see.
