Route 66 Adventure Holidays

The infamous Route 66 is on many travellers list to explore. Stretching from Chicago to Santa Monica on the Californian Pacific Coast, the historic route was over 2,400 miles long. We feature many tours which cover the entire distance and many which cover part way.

So why Route 66? well, part of the romance and attraction is  that it was America's 'first road' in that it was all weather and connected to the coasts (kind of). Maybe more important though, in our opinion is that it has featured in many blockbuster films, but even if not, the idea of a road trip conjures up a long winding open road view, shades on, wind in your hair and the sun beating down as you drive in a convertible of course. We're thinking Easy Rider, Thelma and Louise, True Romance.....a member of our team suggested Magic Mike....not sure about that.

All of our adventure tours and holidays on Route 66 are small group and guided. In some cases there can be a bit of time in the van / transport / etc...but we cover anything like that off in the brochures which you can download or just get in touch and we can help answer any questions.

  • What should I expect?

You can expect a road trip of a life time! You'll be with a small group and guide travelling on Route 66 and taking in what America has to offer. Your group is typically around 12 people with around 60% being solo travellers and the average age is around 39 but beware (!) this can of course change so if you'd like to know more about any specific tour and start date then please do contact us.

Along the way you'll of course stop many times and explore the area. Your guide will be on hand all the time to help or provide information (as well as some entertainment!).

You can expect to have a great time, make friends and have some wonderful memories.

  • What are the highlights of Route 66?

There is so much! Check out each tour itinerary and make sure it is for you, they're all good of course!  Here are some key highlights:

    1. Being on the road itself!  Taking in the views and the idea that here you are, on Route 66 travelling across America - something never to be taken away from you.

    2. The Painted Desert (Indian Wells, Arizona). A desert of rocks, but when the sunsets the rocks become a canvas for colour and the light creates an almost magical scene as the colours changes and merge.

    3. Route 66 Museum (Oklahoma). Everything Route 66 is here and you'll get an insight into the history and really why it is such an important part of American identity.

    4. Santa Monica Pier. Maybe one of the most famous piers in the world and an end point of Route 66. Santa Monica itself is a gorgeous place with wonderful beaches we're sure you'd enjoy.

    5. Cadillac Ranch (Amarillo, Texas). You may have seen pictures of this ranch before, a row of Cadillac's half buried in the ground with their tails in the air and painted in a psychedelic groove. Not to be missed.

    6. The Petrified Forest (Holbrook, Arizona). Just off route 66 this area is home to petrified wood where some pieces life began 25 million years ago. Yes. You'll also see the badlands wildlife, magical colours at sunset and this is an important area for native american culture.

    7. The National Parks. On many tours you'll visit Zion, Death Valley, the Grand Canyon, Monument Valley and more. All offer something different and all are well worth visiting!

    8. The Cities. You'll visit some of America's best and most famous like New Orleans and Nashville to name but two and that's not counting the bigger beasts like NYC and LA. Of course, each city has masses to offer and require a book each !

  • What are the groups like?

Group sizes are usually 10 to 12 people and mixed gender (around 50/50) with about two thirds of people being solo travellers. The average age is usually around 39 but of course every group is different and won't always fit the average. If you've found a tour and start date you're interested in and would like to know more about the group and people who have booked on please do get in touch and we can provide more information.

  • I am a solo traveller, is that OK?

Yes, sure is! About two thirds of those who book with us are solo travellers so you're in good company. On the tour you'll be paired with someone of the same gender and age to share a room with as this keeps the costs down.In very rare instances where the two people paired don't get on then the guide will help change things around, we want to make sure everyone has a good time!

  • How much money would I need?

Good question. This really depends upon how long you're travelling for and what is  / is not included in the tour. In each brochure for each trip we recommend an amount you'd require each day or jut give us a call and we can answer any questions.

  • What is the accommodation like?

The accommodation is usually 3 star to 4 star hotels but that can vary pending the tour and of course the accommodation is different as you travel. Some tours have campaign options too in which case your accommodation is a tent!  There is nothing quite like camping in a national park and seeing the stars as a canvas above you!
