Holidays As LGBT Travellers
We believe in diversity and inclusion for everyone, and welcome all genders and sexualities to book with us! We want you to feel comfortable whilst travelling, and we are happy to talk you through any concerns you may have. Many countries across the globe are opening up to gay travellers, as it becomes legalised and accepted more, however there are some that aren’t as accepting and it is even illegal in some destinations. It’s important to do your research before you travel to be aware of local laws and customs. Check out the UK government website for more detailed information, Click Here.
What should I expect on a tour?
The main thing to expect is to have a good time, make friends and have some experiences you'll keep for your life. You'll join a group of around 10 to 12 people typically. If you're a solo traveller you'll be paired with someone of the same gender to share a room with. If you love your own space at the end of each day, then on nearly all trips it is possible to pay a little extra to have your own room.
You will of course have a guide who will meet everyone together on day one usually in the afternoon of your accommodation for that night. Your guide will introduce themselves and give you a briefing on what you’ll be seeing and any key information you need to know about and answer any questions or concerns you may have at that point. Depending on flight times the tour leader will nearly always organise a meal together that first evening together and this is when you'll begin to get to know one another.
Over the coming days you'll travel together and have wonderful experiences but you'll also get your own time too.
Your guide is there to help you and manage the tour to the end. If you'd like to know more please call or chat online and we can help.
LGBT friendly destinations
Many countries are accepting of all sexualties, some more than others. Most of Europe it is legal and gay friendly.
Sweden and Norway are great countries for LGBT travellers. With same sex marriage legal and laws to protect people against discrimination. Click Here to see our trips in Sweden and HERE in Norway.
It’s no surprise that the UK is near the top of the list of countries safe for LGBT travellers. Click Here to see our tours in the UK.
Portugal is simillar to Norway with its legal gay marriage and protection laws. Click Here to see our tours in Portugal.
Canada is very welcoming to all LGBT residents and tourists, with protection laws in place to ensure a safe environment. Click Here to see our tours in Canada.
The USA can be, depending on what state you’re in. California and the state of New York are very accepting whilst Southern states like Texas aren’t so much. Click Here to see our USA trips.
Australia similar to the USA can be in cities such as Sydney and Melbourne, but in more rural areas they may not be as used to it. Click Here to see our Australia tours.
New Zealand is widely accepting, being one of the first countries to legalise gay marriage - before the UK even! Click Here to see our New Zealand tours.
Israel - Click Here to see our tours in Israel.
Costa Rica is the 1st country in Central America to legalise gay marriage! Click Here to view our Costa Rica tours.
If you’re travelling to Africa, the only country that is recognised as gay friendly would be South Africa. It has legalised gay marriage and has very progressive transgender laws. Click Here to see our South Africa tours
Destinations to be cautious as LGBT
Whilst many countries are accepting of all people regardless of sexual orientation, there are some destinations that aren’t as welcoming - mainly due to religious beliefs and culture. This isn’t to say you can’t travel there - you just need to be careful not to be obvious about your sexual preferences as you may attract negative attention and potentially risk prison!
The Maldives may be a beautiful romantic destination but LGBT travellers should be careful as it is against the law.
Malaysia has harsh punishments for homosexuality and recently (2019) their tourism minister even denied the existence of gay people!
The middle east unsurprisingly is not accepting of homosexuality and is illegal in counties such as the United Arab Emirates, Qatar and Iran.
In most African countries homosexuality is illegal and punishable in countries such as Tanzania, Kenya, Ethiopia, Egypt, Zambia and Uganda.
Can we hold hands and kiss?
Once again, it depends on the situation and the destination. It’s always best to research your specific destination to check the local laws and customs. You should be able to assess situations as you would at home, as to what’s generally considered too much PDA.
Can we share a room and bed as a same sex couple?
When you book a tour with us, the operators will usually always place you in the same room if you’re travelling in a pair, regardless of gender. If travelling solo, they’d usually pair you with someone of the same gender anyway. Twin beds are always booked unless specified. So if you’ve booked a tour with us, let us know if you’d like a double bed and we can request this with the operator. They will advise if it’s not recommended, although usually hotels are more tolerant with tourists.
Do I have my own room?
On all tours a solo traveller is paired with someone of the same gender to share a room with. We find it great to have someone to chat to at the end of every day. One of you will always remember what time breakfast is the next morning!
On most tours you are able to secure your own room by paying a little more, you can see these costs on any tour page or on the payment page where you have the option to select your own room.
Can trans travellers use their preferred public toilets?
It’s always wise to research the particulars of whichever country you are visiting, and when you’re there speak to your tour leader for advice. Safety is paramount to us so sometimes it’s best to use your judgement and gauge which option is safest for you when overseas.
