Northern Lights Adventures
The Northern Lights are on so many people's must-see list! And with good reason - the dancing lights that fill the night sky with ribbons of light are magical and other worldly. But beware! This natural phenomenon can be notoriously difficult to capture.
The colours that you see depend on the altitude and the type of gas particles that are colliding. The most common colours are greens and yellow but you might be lucky enough to see reds, purples and blues.
We know a bit more about what the Aurora Borealis, and the best conditions for it to appear but still there are no guarantees, which we think makes seeing this phenomenon even more special. Whilst some of the team have been lucky enough to see the lights a few times, others have been chasing them for years!
Here we list some of the best places that you can try and catch the Northern Lights and some FAQs that will help with your planning. With all the destinations, there are many reasons to visit, including stunning scenery, native wildlife and winter sports, so even if you don't manage to see The Northern Lights, you will still have an incredible adventure.
Iceland
This is one of the most popular destinations for Northern Light spotting. Many trips are designed around getting to see the lights but they also make sure that you get to see some incredible natural scenery, cool towns and other sites along the way. One of our favourite trips to see the Northern Lights does so on traditional Icelandic horses. You don’t need a great deal of horse riding experience, and it’s a truly unique way of experiencing the country.
Norway
Norway is one of the most beautiful countries and in winter it becomes a magical place! The Lights are often visible on cold clear nights but our tours will take you through the famous and imposing fjords, along glaciers and into the charming coastal towns. You will also be able to see reindeer and try snowshoeing.
Finland
Head to the far north towards the Arctic for the best chance of seeing the Northern Lights. And many people also combine a trip to Lapland with their hunt. Will traditional huskies and cosy lodges it is a winter wonderland up there. But even if you don’t manage to see the lights, the natural scenery in Oulanka National Park is well worth the experience. And of course, while in Finland you have to try a traditional sauna!
Canada
The Northwest Territories are a popular choice for Aurora hunters with many tours combining some classic cold weather experiences like snowmobiling into the trip. Canada has great conditions for the Northern lights and can often be seen from August. One of our favourites takes you up to Churchill where you will be able to look for polar bears and explore Hudson Bay’s other wildlife as well as spending the night on the lookout for the Northern Lights.
When To Travel
The conditions that you need for the Northern Lights are quite specific which make sit all the harder to plan. On the whole, you need to head in the winter of these countries, with cold, clear nights with minimal light from the moon, stars and pollution.
On the whole for Northern Europe, you will be looking at travelling between October and March, for the best chance to see the lights. In Canada and some parts of the US you can see them as early as August.
Still, it’s not as simple as that - light pollution, lunar cycles and cloud cover also impact whether you will be able to see them and how clearly, so there is still an element of chance when you get there.
What should I bring with me?
With the majority of these trips, the important out layers that will keep you safe and warm will be provided. This will often include now suits and boots so you don't have to worry about the technical parts of the kit. However, you will still need a good, waterproof winter coat and sturdy walking boots for the rest of the time. Plus, make sure you pack layers and thermals that you can use underneath the outer suits. It’s so important to keep your body warm and it will make the whole experience much more enjoyable.
Batteries will lose charge much quicker in the cold so make sure you have spares if you plan on photographing the Northern Lights. You might need something a bit more specialised than a phone camera though! Then it’s the usual things for sold weather travel like hats, gloves, sunscreen etc.
