Alaska is maybe most famous for its vast wilderness and the wildlife that the epic surroundings supports.

The most popular animal to see is of course the Bear. Brown and Black bears are common in parts of Alaska. They're closely related to the Polar Bear and can usually be found close to or near by rivers where they fish for Salmon primarily.

The rivers not only boast healthy populations of salmon and other fish but they also support the ecology of birds specifically the eagle population. The Bald Eagle is the most common and can be found on the coast lines and waterways inland.

Other popular animals to see, although rather more difficult, are wolves. There are various species of Wolf throughout the state and it will be a feather in your hat if you see one!

Finally of course is maybe the most iconic animal of all associated with Alaska the Moose! Many people say that Moose are much larger than they expected when seeing one for the first time. Here's hoping you see one on your travels!

Getting to the Alaska is pretty straight forward. 

Daily flights are offered direct to most of the country’s major cities. There is also a huge availability of domestic flights, which means you can fly to a town nearest the start of your adventure tour. Some low-cost airlines like Norwegian Air for example have started flying direct to many of the bigger cities where you can find deals from the UK for as low as £260 (at the time of writing.) Try to book as far as you can in advance as ticket prices can rise significantly.

If you're a solo traveller looking for a group to join you're in the right place. Almost all of our trips are small group experiences and guided. usually around half of those on any group are solo travellers with the other half made up of couples and friends. 

Solo travellers are paired within someone of the same gender to share a room but if you'd like your own room you can often pay a little extra.

Alaska's winter runs from October to April and the temperatures are very, very cold with short days. 

So, we recommend the best time to travel to Alaska is between mid to late to through to September. The days are longer, the weather more pleasant being around 18 Celsius  on average , good but not beach weather! During this period the abundant Alaskan wildlife is also visible making your holiday more memorable.

It is worth nothing though that the weather can change quickly particularity at any altitude so be prepared.

To enter the United States as a tourist you may not need a visa if you’re a UK or EU citizen and intend to stay for less than 90 days, however you do need to apply for the Visa Waiver Program. To find out more visit https://esta.cbp.dhs.gov/esta/

You may also need to show your return ticket upon arrival and / or complete a landing card upon arrival. UK citizens if you’re staying longer than 90 days then you’ll need to apply for a visa before travelling. If you over stay you may be fined and / or detained so it’s not worth the risk!

The United States uses the U.S dollar as their currency. Cities are generally more expensive (food, accommodation, shopping) than smaller towns. 

Food and drinks are usually quite a bit cheaper than in the UK but it’s very important to remember that tipping is mandatory and not leaving a 15-20% tip in bars and restaurants can be seen as insulting. Other places where tips are expected are taxis, salons, hotels (porters), but if you’re unsure, check with your local guide. 

Another thing to remember while shopping is that sales tax is added afterwards. So the number on the price tag is not the final price you will have to pay. ATMs are very common and most places accept credit and debit cards.

Most of our trips are completely incident free, but of course there is crime taking place in this massive country, with most crimes reported taking place in the bigger cities. Just take your normal travel precautions and use common sense. If you’re unsure if an area you’d like to venture off to is more unsafe, it’s best to check with your local guide. 

Having noted this we should highlight that the vast majority of trips are incident free and you need not worry but it’s better to be aware and informed than not.

Some vaccinations may be required pending where you are going, when and what you’re doing. Standard and correct advice is to check with your GP before travelling as they’ll have the up to date information.

Travel insurance is mandatory on all our trips so please ensure you take out a policy before travelling.
