Discover the colour, culture and history of Ghana on a small group adventure holiday
Ghana packs a huge amount into a small footprint. Our range of tours covers everything from Accra's Independence Square and Jamestown to the Ashanti Kingdom in Kumasi, home to Manhyia Palace and the Akwasidae Festival. Head south to the coast for Cape Coast Castle and Elmina's St George's Castle, two of West Africa's most significant sites in the story of the transatlantic slave trade, then into Kakum National Park's rainforest canopy walkway.
Several itineraries also head north to Mole National Park for elephant safari, or into the Volta Region to hike Mount Afadjato, Ghana's highest peak, and visit Wli Falls, West Africa's tallest waterfall.
For travellers who want to go further off the beaten track, a number of our Ghana adventures continue on into Togo and Benin — taking in Lomé's markets, the stilt village of Ganvie, and Ouidah, widely regarded as the birthplace of Voodoo.
Every trip is led by a local guide throughout, with community-based experiences built in — from staying in a guesthouse in Bonkro that supports local conservation, to Fairtrade cocoa farm visits and Global Mamas batik workshops. All bookable with our Best Price Promise, and flights can be added with ATOL protection.
Which Ghana tour is right for me?
If you're short on time, our 8-day coastal trip covers Cape Coast, Kakum National Park and the Ankasa rainforest. For a full introduction to the country, our 15 and 16-day tours combine Accra, the Ashanti Kingdom, the coast and the Volta Region. If wildlife is a priority, our Best of Ghana 2027 tour is the only one in the range that includes a safari, in Mole National Park. For those who want to go further off the beaten track, three itineraries extend into Togo and Benin.
How physically demanding are the Ghana tours?
Most of our Ghana itineraries carry a physical rating of 3 out of 5, meaning moderate activity such as guided walks, the Kakum canopy walkway and an optional hike up Mount Afadjato (with an easier alternative always available). Two of our tours are rated 2 out of 5 and are a gentler pace throughout.
Do I need a visa and vaccinations for Ghana?
All travellers need a passport valid for at least 6 months, and proof of Yellow Fever vaccination is mandatory. Depending on your nationality, you may also need a Ghanaian visa and an official Letter of Invitation. Requirements can change, so it's essential to check with your embassy or consulate before you travel.
Can I combine Ghana with Togo and Benin?
Yes — several of our itineraries continue across the border into Togo and Benin, taking in Lomé's markets, the stilt village of Ganvie, and Ouidah, the spiritual home of Voodoo. If you'd rather stay within Ghana, our shorter tours (8 to 16 days) keep to the one country.
When can I see the Akwasidae Festival?
The Akwasidae Festival is held by the Ashanti people at the Royal Palace in Kumasi roughly every six weeks. It's included on selected departures of some of our tours — check the specific dates and prices tab on each tour page to see which departures line up with the festival.
What's included in the price, and are flights included?
This varies by tour, so always check the individual itinerary, but typically includes accommodation (a mix of hotels, community guesthouses and lodges), a local guide throughout, and a number of meals. International flights aren't included as standard, but can be added with ATOL protection.
Are these tours suitable for solo travellers?
Yes to both. Solo travellers are paired in same-sex shared accommodation as standard, with a 'My Own Room' option available for a single room.
