Summary

The Marangu Route is one of the most popular and iconic routes to the summit of Mount Kilimanjaro, offering a unique and more comfortable trekking experience compared to other routes. Often referred to as the “Coca-Cola Route,” it is known for its gradual ascent, making it the least physically demanding of all the Kilimanjaro routes. The trek is well-suited for those who prefer a less strenuous climb, as it follows a steady path with fewer steep inclines.

One of the key features of the Marangu Route is that it offers hut accommodation at each stop, making it the only route on the mountain to do so. Unlike other routes where trekkers camp in tents, climbers on the Marangu Route stay in dormitory-style huts, which provides a more comfortable and sheltered experience, especially in colder weather.

The trek typically takes five days to complete, although it is strongly recommended to add an extra acclimatisation day to improve your chances of successfully reaching the summit. Spending an additional day helps your body adjust to the altitude, increasing the likelihood of a successful summit. While the route is considered less challenging, the summit push is still a serious undertaking, requiring determination and resilience.

The Marangu Route offers stunning views of the mountain and a variety of landscapes, from lush rainforests to alpine meadows. It’s a fantastic choice for climbers looking for a balanced trek with good comfort and a high summit success rate.

  • My trip to Kilimanjaro was fantastic. From the start I was very well looked after, including equipment check, a brief introduction and hotel pick up the following day. The trekking experience was really nice, the sleeping huts cosy and the food was great. The whole crew and the guides Murati and Paul were very friendly and caring, also catering for extra wishes. Highlight was the summiting of Mount Kilimanjaro when the crew really went the extra mile to support our team. I can highly recommend this company if you are planning to climb Mt. Kilimanjaro.

  • Will I be affected by the altitude?

Everyone feels the affects of lower oxygen levels but the majority of people just have to take it slowly and have minor symptoms. To keep the impact to a minimum we recommend arriving a couple of days before your climb, taking it slowly on the way up no matter how fit you are, keeping hydrated and avoiding alcohol until your celebrations back in Moshi!

The summit of mount Kilimanjaro is 5,895 meters above sea level, and the Marangu gate, where you start this climb is 1870 masl.
  • When is the best time to climb?

Being near the equator the seasons are not extreme but clear skies, dry weather and how busy the route will all have an impact on your trip. January, February then July to October offer the best weather for climbing, but as a result also the most other people on the mountain! March, June and November are often a happy medium between low numbers and reasonable weather - it depends on your own preference.

It the oldest, most established route up Kilimanjaro. It is considered the easiest route with a more gradual slope (relative!) and the quickest if you have limited time. It is the only route which offers sleeping huts in dormitory style accommodations.
  • Is there mobile signal?

There is intermittent signal on Kilimanjaro but this is often affected by weather and should not be relied upon. It is most common to get signal about once a day, and your guides will be able to advise you on where this is most likely.
  • Can you cater to my diet?

The vast majority of dietary requirements can be catered for but please let our team know in advance.
  • Can I have a shower on Kili?

It is possible to upgrade to have a hot shower tent -ask our team for current prices.
  • What about the toilets?

Don't worry, everyone was wondering! There are "long drop" public toilets at every campsite. Essentially, they are wooden structures built around a deep hole dug into the ground. There are no commodes in the public toilets. You can upgrade to include a toilet tent if you would prefer:) Private toilets consist of a plastic toilet and a privacy tent.
