Summary

Some journeys are simply holidays. This one is a moment in history. On the morning of 30 September 2027, this women-only expedition will stand on the summit of Uhuru Peak — 100 years to the day since Sheila MacDonald became the first recorded woman to reach the Roof of Africa. To retrace her footsteps a century on, shoulder to shoulder with a group of like-minded women and a female-led crew of guides and porters, is to become part of a story far bigger than a single climb.

Over eight days you'll ascend Kilimanjaro by the Lemosho Route, the most beautiful and rewarding way up the mountain. Chosen for its superb acclimatisation, quieter early trails and sheer variety, it carries you through a changing world with every step: from dripping equatorial rainforest into open moorland, across high alpine desert and finally onto the glaciers of the summit cone. Then comes the night you'll never forget — a midnight departure from Barafu Camp, a line of head-torches winding up the scree to Stella Point, and the sunrise breaking over Africa as you make the final walk to Uhuru Peak at 5,895 metres. It is demanding, unforgettable, and — when you sign that summit book on the centenary date — utterly extraordinary.

With the mountain behind you and the celebrations done, the second act of your adventure begins on the plains below. Trading crampons for a game vehicle, you'll head out on a five-day safari through Northern Tanzania's greatest wild places. Search for huge dry-season herds gathering along the river in Tarangire, cross the legendary Serengeti by way of Olduvai Gorge — the very cradle of humankind — and descend into the Ngorongoro Crater, where black rhino graze and black-maned lions hold court over the caldera floor. A final afternoon among the flamingos and forest-canopy monkeys of Lake Manyara brings your journey to a gentle, golden close.

This is more than a climb and more than a safari. It's a celebration of women — on the mountain, in the crew, and in the communities that make it all possible — and a once-in-a-lifetime chance to write yourself into a hundred-year legacy. The Roof of Africa is waiting, and history is calling.

Frequently asked questions

  • Do I need any previous climbing or mountaineering experience?

No technical climbing skills, ropes or crampons are required — Kilimanjaro is a high-altitude trek rather than a technical climb. What it does ask for is a good level of fitness and stamina, as summit day is long and demanding. Some hill-walking and cardio preparation beforehand will make the experience far more enjoyable.
  • How fit do I need to be?

This is a challenging trip with a physical rating of 4 out of 5. You should be comfortable walking for six to eight hours on consecutive days over varied terrain, with a very long summit push (typically 7–8 hours up and 4–6 hours down). Regular walking, hiking and cardio training in the months before you travel is strongly recommended.
  • Is this really a women-only departure?

Yes. This is an exclusively women-only climb with a female-led crew of guides and support staff wherever possible — a genuine celebration of women both on the mountain and in the communities that make the trip possible. It attracts like-minded women of all ages and backgrounds, whether you're travelling solo or with friends.
  • What's the significance of the centenary?

The summit is timed so that you reach Uhuru Peak on the morning of 30 September 2027 — exactly 100 years to the day since Sheila MacDonald became the first recorded woman to stand on the summit of Kilimanjaro. It's a rare chance to be part of a genuine milestone in mountaineering history.
  • Which route do we take, and why?

You'll ascend via the eight-day Lemosho Route, widely considered the most beautiful and rewarding way up the mountain. It's chosen for its superb acclimatisation profile, quieter early trails and dramatic, varied scenery, carrying you through rainforest, moorland, alpine desert and glacier. The longer profile also gives your body more time to adjust, which helps your chances on summit day.
  • How is altitude sickness managed?

Altitude is the main challenge on any Kilimanjaro climb. The Lemosho Route's gradual "walk high, sleep low" profile is designed to aid acclimatisation, and your experienced guides monitor the group closely each day, adjusting the pace to give everyone the best possible chance of reaching the top safely. We'll send detailed advice on preparation and acclimatisation once you book.
  • What does the safari involve?

After the climb you'll enjoy a five-day Big Five safari through Northern Tanzania's finest wildlife areas — Tarangire, the Serengeti and the Ngorongoro Crater, finishing at Lake Manyara — travelling via Olduvai Gorge, the celebrated "cradle of humankind." You'll stay in comfortable safari lodges with a maximum of six guests per vehicle, so everyone gets a window seat.
  • What's included in the price?

The trip includes your hotel nights in Moshi before and after the climb, all mountain camping and meals during the trek, park and conservation fees, airport transfers, and your guiding crew, plus the full safari with lodge accommodation, game drives and park fees. International flights are not included, though we're happy to help you arrange these once your place is confirmed.
  • Do I need travel insurance?

Yes — comprehensive travel insurance is essential for this trip, and you must have a suitable policy in place before you travel. Because Kilimanjaro reaches 5,895m, please make sure your cover specifically includes high-altitude trekking to that elevation, as well as emergency evacuation. As we're not able to advise on or arrange insurance, we'd recommend arranging your own policy from a provider that covers high-altitude expeditions.
  • Is there a single room option, and can I travel solo?

Lots of women join this departure on their own and it's a wonderfully sociable trip. Accommodation is generally arranged on a shared basis; if you'd prefer your own room where available, let us know and we'll check what's possible and confirm any supplement for you.
