Itinerary

  • Day 1

    Welcome To Tanzania!

Today is the arrival day for your trek which begins tomorrow. Today you'll have a briefing in the evening at the Salinero Kilimanjaro Hotel where you'll stay tonight and on your final night of the trip. Salinero Kilimanjaro is Located 3 Km from Moshi town center in the Leafy suburb of shanty town. The hotel now blends in simplistic elegance with perfect architectural designs all combined to entice even the most seasoned traveller. The hotel enjoys a pool, free wifi, full air conditioning and room service. Enjoy!

  • Day 2

    Machame Gate – Machame Camp: 10.75k /7mi | 5-6 hrs | Rainforest

Departing from Moshi a 45-minute drive will take you through the Village of Machame to the Kilimanjaro National Park Gate. We will patiently wait for our permits to be issued while watching the hustle and bustle of operations as many crews prepare for the journey ahead Enjoy the beautiful rainforest scenery and windy trails while your guide tells you about the local flora and fauna and natural wildlife. At these lower elevations, the trail can be muddy and quite slippery. We highly recommend gaiters and trekking poles here.

    Elevation: 1811m/5942ft to 3021m/9911ft Altitude gained: 1210m

  • Day 3

    Machame Camp – Shira Camp: 5.3km/3mi | 4-5hrs | Moorland

After a good nights sleep and a hearty breakfast, we emerge from the rain forest and continue on an ascending path, crossing the valley along a steep rocky ridge. The route now turns west onto a river gorge until we arrive at the Shira campsite. Temperatures begin to drop. Elevation: 3021m/9911ft to 3839m/12,595ft Altitude gained: 818m

  • Day 4

    Shira Camp – Lava Tower – Barranco Camp: 10.75km/6mi | 5-6hrs | Semi-Desert

Although you end the day around the same elevation as when you began, this day is very important for acclimatization. From Shira Plateau we continue east up a ridge, passing the junction towards the Kibo peak before we then continue, South East towards the Lava Tower, called the “Shark’s Tooth” (elev. 4650m/15,250ft). Shortly after the tower, we come to a second junction, which leads to the Arrow Glacier. We then continue to descend to overnight at Barranco Camp. Elevation: 3839m/12,595ft to 3986m/13,077ft Altitude gained: 147m

  • Day 5

    Barranco Camp – Karanga Camp – Barafu Camp: 8.5km/5mi | 6-8hrs | Alpine Desert

After breakfast, we continue on a steep ridge up to the adventurous Barranco Wall to the Karanga Valley and the junction, which connects, with the Mweka Trail. This is one of the most impressive days to see the power, agility, and strength of your crew zip over this wall with what appears such ease. We continue up toward Barafu Camp, and once reached you have now completed the South Circuit, which offers a variety of breathtaking views of the summit from many different angles. An early dinner and rest as we prepare for summit night. Overnight at Barafu Camp. Elevation: 3986m/13,077ft to 4034m/13,235ft to 4662m/15,295ft Altitude gained: 676m

  • Day 6

    Barafu Camp – Summit: 4.86km /3mi up | 5-7hrs | – Mweka Camp: 13km /8mi down | 5-6hrs | Glaciers, Snow Capped Summit

Excitement is building as morning comes with an early start between midnight and 2 a.m. This is the most mentally and physically challenging portion of the trek. We continue our way to the summit between the Rebmann and Ratzel glaciers trying to stay warm and focused on the amazing sense of accomplishment that lies ahead. With a switchback motion in a northwesterly direction and ascend through heavy scree towards Stella Point on the crater rim. You will be rewarded with the most magnificent sunrise during your short rest here. Faster hikers may view the sunrise from the summit. From here on your remaining 1 hour ascent to Uhuru Peak, you are likely to encounter snow all the way. Congratulations, one step at a time you have now reached Uhuru Peak the highest point on Mount Kilimanjaro and the entire continent of Africa! After photos, celebrations and maybe a few tears of joy we take a few moments to enjoy this incredible accomplishment. We begin our steep descent down to Mweka Camp, stopping at Barafu for lunch and a very brief rest. We strongly recommend gaiters and trekking poles for uncooperative loose gravel and volcano ash terrain. Well-deserved rest awaits you to enjoy your last evening on the mountain. Overnight Mweka Camp. Elevation: 4662m/15,295ft to 5895m/19,341ft Altitude gained: 1233m Descent to 3106m/10,190ft Altitude lost: 2789m

  • Day 7

    MWEKA CAMP – MWEKA GATE – MOSHI: 9.1km/6mi |3-4hrs | Rainforest

After breakfast and a heartfelt ceremony of appreciation and team bonding with your crew, it’s been a pleasure! We continue the descent down to the Mweka Park Gate to receive your summit certificates. As the weather is drastically warmer, the terrain is wet, muddy and steep and we highly recommend Gaiters and trekking poles. From the gate, a vehicle will meet you at Mweka village to drive you back to your hotel in Moshi (about 30 minutes).

  • We enjoyed a really nice and remote climb of Mount Kilimanjaro in October 2021. Thanks to our guides Kelvin and Patrik, our cook Sule, the porters Joseph, Emmy and all the others we had a lovely experience. The tent was brandnew (Mountain Hardware), spacious, and we were spoiled more than we expected on a mountain tour. Some items could have been left out, but are probably used in a bigger group (glas bottles of ketchup). THe heavy metal pan to serve sizzling meat at 4.000m altitude was special, but made us feel bad having someone carry that all the way for us. The crew/staff was always friendly and helpful, and we had a really great time - and can only recommend to do the tours right now. Almost no people, very remote routes and campsites, and all the people down there need tourists to make their living. So take the chance and experience Tanzania as it was 40 years ago.

  • A true test of self determination with amazing support from the guides, cooks and porters, I couldn’t have done it without them! The team I had were incredibly selfless and just wanted to help you succeed and enjoy yourself the whole time! They held great knowledge of the mountain and local region and their English was incredibly good! I would strongly recommend this operator, especially Joseph (main guide) and his amazing team to anyone willing to have a crack at Mt Kilimanjaro!

Our Important Notes and Packing List cover all essentials, from necessary equipment to inclusions, ensuring you're fully equipped and informed for this extraordinary adventure and more.

Frequently asked questions

  • Which airport do I fly into?

You'll need to fly into Arusha or Kilimanjaro International Airport, the former tends to be cheaper. We can help arrange and book flights, just contact our team.
  • Where should I stay before the trek?

We recommend you stay in the Salinero Hotel in Moshi, or very close. Airport transfers and pre and post trip nights here can be booked through us, just ask our team.
  • What's Included?

Meals - Breakfasts: 6, Lunches: 6, Dinners: 5. Accommodation: High quality 4 season tents during the trek. If you'd like to add accommodation before or after your adventure please contact our team. Activities: Trekking, Exploring Local Guide: Yes. This adventure is led by a local guide throughout. The main language of this adventure is English. Please contact us for other languages available.
  • What should I pack?

A full packing list is included in the brochure which is free to download (there are buttons on this page, above the availability section:)
  • How many people are in the groups?

The group sizes are 1 to 20 people with most averaging between 5 and 10 people. Please check with our team for any specific departure date and we can provide more detail.
  • Will I be affected by the altitude?

Everyone feels the affects of lower oxygen levels but the majority of people just have to take it slowly and have minor symptoms. To keep the impact to a minimum we recommend arriving a couple of days before your climb, taking it slowly on the way up no matter how fit you are, keeping hydrated and avoiding alcohol until your celebrations back in Moshi!
  • How high is the climb?

The summit of mount Kilimanjaro is 5,895 meters.
  • When is the best time to climb?

Being near the equator the seasons are not extreme but clear skies, dry weather and how busy the route will all have an impact on your trip. January, February then July to October offer the best weather for climbing, but as a result also the most other people on the mountain! March, June and November are often a happy medium between low numbers and reasonable weather - it depends on your own preference.
  • Do I require any vaccinations?

Please consult with your GP or local travel clinic to check what they recommend for you specifically - Tanzania does require Yellow Fever vaccines for some arrivals. Many destinations currently require a full course of COVID vaccines, as this is updated regularly please check with your own foreign offices website.
  • Do I need a visa?

Most visitors from the UK, US, Australia, Canada, Ireland, Europe and NZ will require a tourist visa. Please check with your local government office.
  • Is there mobile signal?

There is intermittent signal on Kilimanjaro but this is often affected by weather and should not be relied upon. It is most common to get signal about once a day, and your guides will be able to advise you on where this is most likely.
  • Can you cater to my diet?

The vast majority of dietary requirements can be catered for but please let our team know in advance.
  • Can I have a shower on Kili?

It is possible to upgrade to have a hot shower tent -ask our team for current prices.
  • What about the toilets?

Don't worry, everyone was wondering! There are "long drop" public toilets at every campsite. Essentially, they are wooden structures built around a deep hole dug into the ground. There are no commodes in the public toilets. You can upgrade to include a toilet tent if you would prefer:) Private toilets consist of a plastic toilet and a privacy tent. Just ask our team for current prices.
  • Why choose the Machame route?

Machame is one of our favourite routes, and also has one of the highest success rates as it approaches the peak slower, and allows the ascents and descents that allow the best acclimatisation. It doesn't take the same route back down after Barafu and is one of the best for its range of scenery.
