  • Sofia set the tone for the whole experience. She was fantastic and where we used other guides, they were wonderful, keen and knowledgeable. Really enjoyed the whole trip. I have done 2 G Adventures and this is my first National Geographic. I found all the trips terrific, and the CEO's amazing, but the extra details you get on National Geographic were greatly appreciated and great value for money spent

Frequently asked questions

  • What currency is used in Morocco and what are the best payment methods?

The local currency is the Moroccan Dirham (MAD). ATMs are common and generally accept Cirrus and Plus system cards, but it's advisable to carry more than one type of card. Visa cards are widely accepted for larger purchases, though a fee usually applies. Euros are commonly accepted and can be exchanged, along with GBP and USD, at money exchange offices in major cities. It's best to use a combination of cash (Euro/GBP or USD) and cards.
  • Are there any specific rules or codes of conduct for this trip?

Illegal drugs are not tolerated. Smoking marijuana and opium is not acceptable for travelers. Exploitation of people in the sex trade is completely contrary to the tour philosophy. Expedition Leaders have the right to expel any member of the group if these rules are violated.
  • What are the primary modes of transportation used during the tour?

Transportation includes a 16-seater minivan (with air conditioning, though cooling capacity may be limited in extreme summer heat), walking, and 4x4 vehicles for the Sahara excursion.
  • How many meals are included in the tour?

The tour includes 14 breakfasts, 5 lunches, and 4 dinners.
  • Are laundry facilities available during the tour?

Laundry facilities are offered by some hotels for a charge. It is suggested to bring non-polluting/biodegradable soap for personal laundry.
  • What kind of accommodation can I expect on this trip?

Accommodation will consist of 13 nights in comfortable local hotels and 1 night in a comfortable desert camp. Rooms are typically twin-share (unless a 'My Own Room' service is booked) and generally include air-conditioning, private bathrooms, and daily breakfast. Some hotels may have swimming pools. Please be aware that Moroccan infrastructure can be less reliable than at home, so occasional quirky plumbing or cold showers might occur.
  • Who will lead the tour group?

The group will be led by a National Geographic Expedition Leader throughout, supported by local guides in various locations.
  • Can solo travelers get their own room?

If you book the 'My Own Room' option, you will receive your own single room for all night stops. Otherwise, single travelers are paired in twin or multi-share accommodation with someone of the same sex.

The maximum group size is 12 travelers, with an average group size of 10.
  • What is Planeterra and how is it involved with the tour?

They support community-owned businesses that empower women, provide youth employment, and protect the environment. The tour operator is Planeterra's largest corporate donor, ensuring 100% of your donation goes directly to these projects, and travelers can contribute through a 'Dollar-a-day Program'.
  • What should I know about safety and security during the trip?

It is recommended to check your government's travel advice. Use a neck wallet or money belt for valuables and leave expensive jewelry at home. Many hotels have safety deposit boxes. A lock is recommended for securing luggage. Your Expedition Leader can amend the itinerary for safety reasons. During free time, use good judgment for optional activities, stay in small groups, and consider taking taxis at night in major cities. Water-based activities should only be undertaken with a guide.

  • What is the tipping custom in Morocco and how is it handled on this tour?

Tipping is customary and expected in Morocco for small service providers. To simplify this, your Expedition Leader will collect a contribution for a 'tipping kitty' on Day 1 (in USD or local currency MAD) to cover tips for group service providers. Tipping your Expedition Leader at the end of the trip is also appreciated, with a general guideline of $8-11 USD per person per day.

It is advisable to drink bottled water in Morocco. Consult your travel doctor for up-to-date medical travel information and inoculations well before departure. Carry a First Aid kit, hand sanitizers/antibacterial wipes, and any personal medical requirements. Be aware that the tour visits remote areas away from medical facilities at times, and leaders are prohibited from administering drugs.

The safety and well-being of all travelers, including those identifying as LGBTQ+, is a priority. Travelers are encouraged to visit the tour operator's LGBTQ+ page for useful resources and to use tools like Equaldex to assess destinations for specific concerns.
