It is recommended to contact your family physician or local travel clinic at least one month before departure for the most up-to-date health information. A basic first-aid kit and hand sanitizers are advisable. Medical facilities can be basic. A valid Yellow Fever vaccination certificate is compulsory if arriving from or transiting more than 12 hours through a Yellow Fever-risk country for destinations like Botswana, Kenya, Malawi, South Africa, Tanzania, Zambia, and Zimbabwe. Malaria is present in some regions, so preventative medication (prophylaxis) and insect repellent are recommended.

A USD $40 departure tax may apply, and it might already be included in your international air ticket.
  • Are there any specific rooming exceptions on this tour?

Yes, Day 4 (Okavango Delta bush camp) is noted as an exception. Additionally, single travelers are paired with someone of the same sex in shared accommodation without an extra cost. Guidelines per person: CEO: $5-8 USD/day; Local guides: $2-3 USD/day; Safari Guide/Driver: $2-3 USD/day; Restaurant Staff: 10-15% of bill; Okavango Delta polers: 50-100 BWP.
  • What are the main highlights of this trip?

Highlights include feeling the mist of Victoria Falls, wildlife safari drives in Serengeti National Park and Ngorongoro Crater, an overnight bush camp excursion in the Okavango Delta, spending time at the Khama Rhino Sanctuary, and sleeping beneath ancient baobab trees.
  • What are the trip-specific safety considerations?

Nairobi, Dar es Salaam, and Lusaka require precautions: use hotel safe deposits for valuables, keep bags attended, avoid flaunting valuables, stick to main streets during the day, and take taxis at night. Be cautious of con artists. Zanzibar can be unsafe for single female travelers; a male companion is recommended when walking in Stone Town. Arusha and Lilongwe have a more relaxed vibe but still require politeness to beggars and touts. Photography of government/military/border facilities may be restricted, especially in Zimbabwe and Zambia. Drones are prohibited in Southern African national parks. Always follow local guidance and your CEO's instructions. Swimming and water-based activities are at your own risk unless accompanied by a guide.
  • What is Planeterra?

Planeterra International Foundation is a non-profit organization dedicated to turning travel into impact by helping local communities earn income from tourism. They develop and support community-owned businesses that empower Indigenous people, women, and youth, and protect the environment. The tour operator is Planeterra’s largest corporate donor, covering all operating costs, ensuring 100% of your donation goes directly to projects.
  • What rules should I know regarding conduct on this trip?

Illegal drugs are not tolerated and contravene local laws and risk the group. Smoking marijuana/opium, even if part of local culture, is not acceptable for travelers. The exploitation of people in the sex trade is against the tour's philosophy. CEOs have the right to expel any group member found with drugs or using paid sex workers.
  • What should I know about currency, credit cards, and exchanging money while on this tour?

Currencies used include South African Rand (ZAR), Botswana Pula (BWP), Zambian Kwacha (ZMK), US Dollar (USD) and ZiG (Zimbabwe, USD is most reliable), Malawi Kwacha (MWK), and Tanzania/Kenya/Uganda Shilling (TZS, KES, UGX). USD is the easiest foreign currency to exchange, with large notes getting the best rates. USD notes older than 2006 are not accepted. Bring USD cash for visas at borders. Avoid traveler's cheques. Visa/Plus system cards are most widely accepted debit cards; Mastercard/Cirrus are less common, so consider bringing both. Credit cards are accepted in major cities but not widely relied upon, often with a 5-10% fee. Power outages and ATMs running out of cash are common outside major centers, so a combination of foreign currency and debit/credit cards for cash advances is best. Refer to www.xe.com for daily exchange rates. Zanzibar will require mandatory Inbound Travel Insurance from ZIC as of Oct 1st, 2024.
  • What are the visa and entry requirements for my trip?

All countries require a valid passport (minimum 6 months validity). It is your responsibility to check and obtain correct travel documentation from your local embassy/consulate or travel agent. As of January 1st, 2024, Kenya requires an Electronic Travel Authorisation (eTA) for all travelers, eliminating the visitor visa requirement. An East Africa Tourist Visa (US$100) allows travel between Rwanda and Uganda for 90 days. For Tanzania, you'll need host information for online visa applications (provided by the tour operator). Botswana charges a USD 30 tourism levy on arrival. A Kaza Uni-Visa (US$50) is recommended for Zimbabwe and Zambia, valid for 30 days and multiple entries. Malawi may require an e-Visa in advance. As of October 1st, 2024, Zanzibar requires mandatory Inbound Travel Insurance from Zanzibar Insurance Corporation (ZIC). Yellow Fever certificates may be required upon entry to some countries if coming from an endemic region.
  • When can I do my laundry on this trip?

Laundry can be done at most campsites if you wish to do your own washing. In Victoria Falls, there's an opportunity to use the tour operator-supported Princess Laundry and Sewing Co-op, which provides income for the cooperative.
