Itinerary
Day 1
Welcome to Pakistan!
Welcome to Islamabad. Independently make your way to the hotel. After settling in, we visit two of the city’s key cultural landmarks: Faisal Mosque and the Lok Virsa Museum.
We explore Pakistan’s national mosque, an iconic symbol of Islamabad designed by Turkish architect Vedat Dalokay. Its white marble, tent-inspired structure and soaring minarets stand against the Margalla Hills, creating one of the most recognisable skylines in the country. The interior features elegant calligraphy and a vast prayer hall that offers a calm, reflective atmosphere.
We continue to the Lok Virsa Museum near the Shakarparian Hills. Here you can discover Pakistan’s rich folk traditions through displays of embroidered costumes, jewellery, woodwork, metalwork, block printing and regional architectural facades. The museum provides an engaging introduction to the country’s diverse cultural heritage.
Day 2
Taxila and Raja Bazaar Visit
After breakfast, we visit Taxila, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, followed by a walk through Raja Bazaar in Rawalpindi.
We explore the ancient remains of Taxila, once a flourishing centre of the Gandhara civilisation between the 6th century BCE and 5th century CE. Spread across more than thirty archaeological sites, the area includes ancient monasteries, stupas and the ruins of early universities where scholars studied philosophy, languages and religion. Highlights include Dharmarajika, Mohra Moradu and Sirkap, which together offer a remarkable window into Buddhist learning and cross-cultural exchange along the early Silk Road.
We visit the Taxila Museum to see an outstanding collection of artefacts uncovered from the surrounding sites. Sculptures, coins, jewellery and finely carved Gandharan statues help bring the ancient civilisation to life.
Later, you walk through the lively lanes of Raja Bazaar, one of Rawalpindi’s oldest markets. Its narrow streets are packed with stalls selling clothing, fabrics, household goods and local snacks such as samosas and bun kebabs - a perfect place to experience everyday life in the city.
Day 3
Drive to Kalash Valley
Islamabad - Chitral. After breakfast, we begin our full-day drive from Islamabad to the Kalash Valley. We make several stops along the way, including lunch at a local restaurant. The journey takes us through striking mountain scenery with glimpses of high peaks as we approach Chitral.
Day 4
Exploring the Kalash Valley
After breakfast, we spend the day discovering the Kalash Valley.
Home to the indigenous Kalash community, the valley offers a rare insight into one of Pakistan’s most distinctive cultures. The Kalash people maintain ancient traditions, colourful festivals and a nature-based belief system that sets them apart from neighbouring communities. They live in the Rumbur, Bumburet and Birir valleys, where terraced fields, wooden homes and mountain views create a uniquely preserved environment.
Their three major festivals - Chilim Josh, Uchal and Choimus - celebrate the seasons with music, dancing and elaborate rituals. The community is also known for its craftsmanship, agriculture and livestock rearing. Their distinct appearance and long-held oral traditions have long fascinated historians and visitors alike.
Day 5
Chitral Cultural and Natural Sites
Chitral - Gol National Park - Garam Chashma - Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. After breakfast, we enjoy the hospitality of our hilltop lodge, decorated with local art and known for its excellent regional cuisine. We then explore several significant sites in the region.
We visit Chitral Fort, which overlooks the Chitral River. Originally built in 1774 and later restored in 1911, it played a notable role during the Great Game, when British and Russian interests competed for influence in Central Asia. The fort remains an important reminder of the region’s strategic history.
We continue to Gol National Park, one of Pakistan’s largest protected areas. The park is home to snow leopards, Asiatic black bears and markhor, set among rugged mountains, forests and waterfalls. It is an excellent place for wildlife viewing and mountain landscapes.
We also visit Garam Chashma, recognised as a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve for its diverse ecosystems, including alpine meadows and conifer forests. It supports species such as the Kashmir markhor, Siberian ibex and the elusive snow leopard. The reserve serves as an important site for conservation and sustainable development research.
After a day of exploring, we head to our hotel in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.
Day 6
Drive to Swat Valley
Khyber Pakhtunkhwa - Swat. After breakfast, we travel from Chitral to the scenic Swat Valley and check in at our hotel, which offers mountain views, modern rooms and a peaceful setting.
Day 7
Swat Valley and Return to Islamabad
Swat - Islamabad. After breakfast, we visit the Swat Museum before continuing to two major historic sites: Raja-Gera Fort and Takht-i-Bahi Monastery.
At the Swat Museum, we see an excellent collection of Gandharan sculptures, friezes, seals and relics from nearby archaeological sites such as Butkara. The museum also features traditional Swati woodwork, jewellery and textiles.
We take a walk to the ancient hilltop Fort of Raja-Gera. Thought to date back to the Mauryan Empire, the fort once commanded the surrounding valley with its defensive walls and watchtowers. Walking its pathways offers a glimpse into the region’s early strategic history.
We then visit Takht-i-Bahi, one of the best-preserved Buddhist monastic complexes of the Gandhara period. Set on a ridge, the site features stupas, monastic cells and meditation halls that reflect centuries of religious learning and artistic exchange between Greek and South Asian cultures. After the visit, we return to Islamabad.
Day 8
Departure from Islamabad
After breakfast, independently make your way to Islamabad International Airport for your return flight home.
