Summary

Looking for more than a cruise to the islands? A week of touring the less-explored parts of the Galápagos Islands is the answer. We’ll start in Santa Cruz, then head to Floreana to stay on a part of the island that sees less visitors than the rest. From there it’s on to Isabela for a few days of hiking, snorkelling, and visiting the island’s main highlights. Top that off with a hike up Sierra Negra Volcano – the second-largest volcanic crater in the world – along with the Galápagos’ typical array of exotic wildlife and prepare to be amazed.

Itinerary

  • Day 1

    Puerto Ayora

Arrive in Baltra and make your way to the hotel in Santa Cruz. Later, visit the Charles Darwin Research Station for an introduction to some of the unique wildlife and history of the area before an evening welcome meeting to become acquainted with the group. As reaching the hotel in Santa Cruz (Puerto Ayora) from the Baltra airport can be tricky, exit the airport and head for the public bus to Itabaca Canal. From there, take a ferry across the canal to Santa Cruz Island. From the ferry terminal, opt to take a taxi or bus to Puerto Ayora, typically a 45-min ride.

  • Day 2

    Puerto Ayora/Floreana Island

In the morning, walk to "Las Grietas" located across Academy Bay, walk through a rugged cactus forest on the way to this stunning lagoon. In the afternoon, hop on a speedboat to nearby Floreana Island. Stay in the the tour operator-supported community guesthouses and eat meals in the community restaurants and help to support community tourism on the island.

  • Day 3

    Floreana Island

Walk along the black-sand beach until Loberia, and enjoy beach time or swimming. Head up to the seldom-visited highlands of Floreana. Enjoy guided walks to observe birds and other wildlife and learn about the area's natural history.

  • Day 4

    Floreana Island/Isabela Island

Travel to Isabela Island. Hike up the active Sierra Negra Volcano and walk around the rim of the largest volcanic crater in the archipelago. Hike to the summit to experience a bird's-eye view of this magical landscape of the surrounding volcanoes and islands.

  • Day 5

    Isabela Island

Enjoy free time in the morning, opt to take a wildlife boat excursion to 'Islote Tintoreras' to view breeding white-tip reef sharks, marine iguanas, blue-footed boobies, rays, and penguins. Later, visit the Giant Tortoise Breeding Centre. Explore the surroundings with a short walk to observe pink flamingos in the wetlands and catch a stunning Isabela sunset on the beach. Along the way, stop at a lookout point, and visit natural pools, beaches, and mangrove swamps. In the evening, relax at the bar or on the beach and opt to enjoy a drink at sunset.

  • Day 6

    Isabela Island/Puerto Ayora

Travel by speedboat back to Santa Cruz Island. Later, enjoy a walk to Tortuga Bay, opt for a kayak, surf lessons or swim in the turquoise water. • Jose provided an exceptional experience. Visiting the Galapagos has been a dream of mine for most of my life and thanks to Jose it was everything I hoped it would be. Some of the key aspects of how Jose did that are: Fantastic time management of the group - his clear communication of timelines and meeting points provided a zero confusion experience. His choice of timing for communicating with the group as a whole was truly impressive. Clear communication of options when we were able to do activities away from the group. It was really nice that he provided opportunities for us to hang back and move at our own pace if we were tired or just wanted time away from the group. Jose's knowledge and passion for the islands shone through with everything he did, it was clear that he had a positive relationship with all of the G adventure partner companies. Jose found many opportunities for us to enhance our experience by taking note of our interests and highlighting sights and locations that would fit our interests. Jose has an incredible ability to capture the groups attention and keep everyone together. He on many occasions would have the group move to side for additional discussions of history and biology allowing for us to be out of the way of foot traffic from other groups. It made for a really personalized experience. 10 out of 10 I hope Jose enjoyed having us in his group as much as we enjoyed having him as our guide. I hope to see him again in the future.

  • What kind of accommodation is provided?

Accommodation includes 4 nights in hotels and 2 nights in G Adventures-supported community guesthouses. Please note that hot water shortages and power outages can be common in Galapagos, and the guesthouse on Floreana Island may offer simpler amenities due to its remote location.
  • What meals are included in the tour price?

The tour includes 6 breakfasts, 1 lunch, and 2 dinners.
  • What modes of transportation are used on this trip?

Transportation includes private vans, speedboats, and walking.
  • Are speedboats used for inter-island travel, and what should I know about them?

Yes, speedboats are used for transfers between islands. These rides can be quite rough, especially from July to December. If you are prone to seasickness, it is recommended to bring medication.
  • What should I know about currency, credit cards, and exchanging money while on this tour?

The local currency is US dollars. Credit and debit cards can be used for cash advances, though ATM availability may be limited and unreliable on the islands. It's best to bring a combination of USD cash and cards. Bring USD banknotes in denominations smaller than $100, and ensure notes are in good condition. Be aware that credit card purchases may incur a 5-10% fee. It's crucial to withdraw enough cash for the duration of your trip while in the islands.
  • How much spending money do I need for my trip?

Spending money requirements vary by traveler based on personal habits for drinks, souvenirs, and tipping. Due to the remoteness of the Galapagos, credit card machines are not available on board vessels, so cash is essential. ATM machines on the islands are extremely limited and unreliable. It is important to plan and withdraw sufficient cash beforehand.
  • Is an emergency fund recommended?

Yes, it is recommended to have access to at least an additional USD $200 (or equivalent) as an 'emergency' fund for unforeseen circumstances.
  • Are international flights included in this trip?

No, international flights are generally not included in the price of your tour.
  • Are there any additional fees upon arrival, like the Galapagos Park Entry Fee or Transit Control Card?

Yes, upon arrival at Baltra airport, you must pay a Galápagos Islands Park entry fee of $200 USD per person ($100 USD for children under 12 years old) in cash. Additionally, a Transit Control Card (TCT) fee of $20 USD per person is required, which should ideally be purchased online beforehand or at the Galapagos Government Council counter at the airport.
  • Is travel insurance compulsory?

Yes, travel insurance is compulsory. You will not be permitted to join the group until evidence of travel insurance, covering medical expenses (minimum USD 200,000 including emergency evacuation and repatriation), is sighted by your leader.
  • Are there any health considerations or medical forms required?

It is your responsibility to consult with your travel doctor for up-to-date medical travel information. Travelers with a pre-existing medical condition are required to complete a medical questionnaire, signed by their physician. The adventure also travels to high altitude in Quito (over 8,000 feet), and while most people adapt, altitude sickness can occur.
  • What should I know about safety and security on this trip?

It is recommended to check your government's travel advice. Use a neck wallet or money belt for valuables and leave expensive jewelry at home. Many hotels offer safety deposit boxes. While cities are generally safe during the day, it's recommended to stay in small groups and use taxis at night. Participate in water-based activities with a guide, and swimming is always at your own risk.
  • What rules apply regarding illegal drugs and the sex trade?

Illegal drugs are not tolerated. Possessing or using drugs contravenes laws and puts the group at risk. The exploitation of people in the sex trade is against the tour operator's philosophy. Group leaders have the right to expel any member for these reasons.
  • Who will be leading the group?

All group trips are accompanied by a CEO (Chief Experience Officer)/Naturalist Guide, who is certified by the Galápagos National Park Authority. They provide information, suggestions, and connect you with local experiences.
  • What should I know about tipping?

Tipping is an expected, though not compulsory, expression of satisfaction. A guideline for tipping your CEO is 5-10 USD per traveler per day.

Note that space may be limited for optional activities during high season.
  • What is Planeterra?

Planeterra International Foundation is a non-profit organization that turns travel into impact by helping local communities earn income from tourism. The tour operator covers all operating costs, so 100% of donations go directly to Planeterra projects.
  • What personal details are required at the time of booking?
