Summary

Colombia has a certain kind of magic that you won’t find anywhere else in the Caribbean. On this trip, you’ll experience it first-hand via visits to rural regions, treks through Tayrona National Park’s picturesque trails and (of course), downtime on the beach. Spend time with village communities to learn about Indigenous traditions before heading deep into the jungle to Teyuna — the fabled Ciudad Perdida (Lost City) older than Machu Picchu — a place crowded with history and free of crowds. Colombia is mysterious. Come figure out the riddle.

The group will have lunch at the village and hike about 4 hours to the first basecamp.

  • Day 10

    Ricardito Camp/Teyuna Paraiso Camp

The total hiking time today is 8 hours with about 3 hours to explore the Lost City.

  • Day 12

  • Cool The tour planning, and professional , knowledgeable, and fun CEOs, and great travel companions made the trip unforgettable.

  • As a solo traveller I loved the G Adventures trip I did in Columbia. The itinerary of seeing the Carribean Coastline from Cartagena to the Tayrona National park was beautiful. We fit in so much from walking city tours, hikes to waterfalls & hike, sea swim and snorkelling in the national park along with a boat ride to hidden cove beach too! The Lost City trek was amazing and I loved the unspoilt nature of the places we stayed and the areas we visited on the route. I think the friends I met on this trek I will have for life now. The itinerary, the Ceo's on both trips were amazing and so knowledgeable and helpful.

Frequently asked questions

  • What type of accommodation is provided during the tour?

You will stay in hotels or guesthouses for 9 nights and experience camping in hammocks or rustic bunks for 4 nights during the Lost City Trek portion of the trip.
  • How challenging is the Lost City Trek?

The Lost City Trek is rated as physically challenging (Physical Rating 4). Hiking days are typically 4-6 hours, and the highest altitude reached is 1,200 meters (3,937 feet). The trek is made challenging by the high humidity and temperatures, which can range from 35-45 degrees Celsius, and there can be heavy rain and muddy conditions.
  • Do I need to carry all my luggage during the Lost City Trek?

During the 5-day Lost City Trek, you are required to carry your own gear in a day pack. Your main luggage will be stored at the hotel in Santa Marta. It is possible to hire a mule to carry equipment for the trek at an additional cost of 40-50 USD per day.
  • What are the typical weather and environmental conditions during the Lost City Trek?

The temperature is generally between 35-45 degrees Celsius with high humidity. During the dry season (December-March), the trail can be dusty. From April-November, during the rainy season, the trail can be muddy and slippery, and river crossings can be as high as waist height. Mosquitos and other bugs are present, so insect repellent is highly recommended. Campsites have mosquito nets over beds and hammocks.
  • Is drinking water readily available during the Lost City Trek?

Drinking water comes directly from the rivers and is well-treated with filters and UV light, available for refilling bottles at every camp. However, during heavy rains, the water might appear dirty after treatment. Shops are also available at camps and checkpoints to purchase bottled water if preferred.
  • Will there be electricity available at the Lost City Trek camps?

Yes, electricity is available in each camp between 5:00 PM and 9:00 PM.
  • Are there specific dates when Tayrona National Park is closed?

Yes, Tayrona National Park has scheduled closures on certain dates in February, June, October, and November for ecological restoration. If your trip falls during these dates, an alternative visit to Taironaka Park will be arranged, which includes tubing down the Don Diego River and learning about the local Kogi people.
  • How many meals are included in the tour?

The tour includes 13 breakfasts, 7 lunches, and 4 dinners.
  • Who will lead the tour and provide guidance?

All group trips are accompanied by a CEO (Chief Experience Officer) throughout the tour. Additionally, indigenous local guides will lead specific activities, such as the Lost City Trek, providing specialized knowledge and cultural insights.
  • What is the typical group size for this tour?

The tour has a maximum group size of 16 participants, with a minimum of 1 required for the tour to operate.
  • Will I have opportunities to learn about local culture and indigenous traditions?

Yes, the tour includes a visit to a nearby indigenous community, such as the Katanzama community, where you can gain insights into the rich traditional cultures of the region, including an Arhuaco textile weaving demonstration.
  • What is the customary practice for tipping on this tour?

Tipping is customary in Latin America. For service providers like waiters, approximately 10% is recommended. For local guides and drivers, a guideline of $5-10 USD per day is suggested. For your CEO, an amount of $30-40 USD per person per week is a personal preference and appreciated for outstanding service.
  • What currency should I use and how should I manage my money?

Colombian Pesos (COP) are the local currency. Credit cards and debit cards, especially Visa, are useful for cash advances at ATMs, but it is recommended not to rely solely on them. A combination of COP, traveler's cheques, and cards is best. Please carry an additional $200 USD (or equivalent) as an emergency fund. Notes should be in good condition and in smaller denominations for easier exchange.
  • Are there any specific health recommendations or vaccination requirements for this trip?

It is your responsibility to consult with your travel doctor for up-to-date medical travel information and required inoculations well before departure. Proof of Yellow Fever vaccination may be required for entry into Tayrona National Park. We recommend carrying a first-aid kit, hand sanitizers, and any personal medical requirements. Travelers with pre-existing medical conditions are required to complete a short medical questionnaire signed by their physician.
  • Will hot water be available for showers throughout the tour?

Please note that hot water is uncommon in the Caribbean region of Colombia, so showers are likely to only have cold water while visiting this area.
  • What is the age range for participants on this tour?

The minimum age for participants is 12 years old, and the maximum age is 100 years old.
