  • Hot but a great variety of experiences to feel like I did Colombia justice. The CEOs (all of them) have been amazing in a unique way. They add the little bit of extra spice needed to make visiting new countries the best experience. Also, most people who join the tour have become lifelong friends!

Frequently asked questions

  • What is the physical rating for this tour, especially concerning the Lost City Trek?

The tour has a physical rating of 4 (challenging). The Lost City Trek involves hiking 4-6 hours a day, reaching an altitude of 1,200 m (3,937 ft). It is challenging due to high humidity, heat (generally between 35-45 degrees Celsius), and potential heavy rain and muddy conditions, with river crossings that can be waist height during the rainy season.
  • Are there any specific dates when Tayrona National Park might be closed during the tour?

Yes, Tayrona National Park will be closed on certain dates in February, June, October, and November (e.g., February 1st to 15th, June 1st to 15th, and October 19th to November 2nd in 2026). If your trip falls during these dates, you will visit Taironaka Park instead, where you can tube down the Don Diego River and connect with the local Kogi people.
  • What kind of accommodation is provided on this tour?

Accommodation includes hotels/guesthouses for 15 nights, a hacienda for 2 nights, and camping for 4 nights (in hammocks or rustic bunks) during the Lost City Trek.
  • As a solo traveler, will I have to pay an extra cost for accommodation?

No, solo travelers are paired in twin or multi-share accommodation with someone of the same sex for the duration of the trip, meaning there is no single supplement. However, some specific nights (Armenia, Minca, Lost City Trek) are exceptions where 'My Own Room' options may not apply.
  • How many meals are included in the tour price?

The tour includes 21 breakfasts, 8 lunches, and 4 dinners.
  • What is the typical group size for this tour?

The maximum group size is 16 travelers, with an average of 12.
  • Who will be leading the tour group?

The trip is led by a CEO (Chief Experience Officer) throughout, along with indigenous local guides for specific experiences.
  • What currency should I bring, and how accessible are credit/debit cards?

A combination of COP Colombian Pesos, traveler's cheques, and credit/debit cards (Visa is most widely accepted) is recommended. ATMs are widely available but not guaranteed to work everywhere. Credit card purchases may incur a 5-10% fee. It's best to bring notes in good condition and denominations lower than 100 USD.
  • Is tipping customary on this tour?

Yes, tipping is customary in Latin America. It's recommended to tip service providers (e.g., waiters) approximately 10%. For drivers and local guides, a range of $5-10 USD per day is suggested. An optional guideline of $30-40 USD per person per week is appreciated for the CEO.
  • Are there any specific health requirements for this trip, like vaccinations?

It is your responsibility to consult with your travel doctor for up-to-date medical travel information well before departure. A Yellow Fever vaccination is optional, but some national parks in Colombia may deny entry without proof of vaccination.
  • What level of physical fitness is required for this tour?

An average level of fitness and mobility is required. Travelers must be able to walk unaided, climb 3-4 flights of stairs, step on and off small boats, and carry their own luggage at a minimum. A medical questionnaire is required for travelers with pre-existing medical conditions.
  • What should I know about safety and security in Colombian cities?

Be aware of pickpockets and purse-snatchers in major cities. It's recommended to use a neck wallet or money belt, leave valuable jewelry at home, and utilize hotel safety deposit boxes. At night, it's safer to stay in small groups and take taxis to and from destinations. Your group leader has the authority to amend the itinerary due to safety concerns.
  • Are international flights included in the tour price?

No, international flights are generally not included in the price of your tour. However, all local flights within Colombia are included.
  • Is there a departure tax?

Yes, there is a departure tax of USD $33.
  • What are the main highlights of this tour?

The main highlights include discovering the neighborhoods of Bogotá, savoring Colombian coffee on a farm tour, learning about the history of Medellín, relaxing on the beaches of Santa Marta, hiking to the ancient Lost City (Ciudad Perdida), spending time with the Katanzama Indigenous community, and exploring Tayrona National Park.
  • What modes of transportation are used during the tour?

Transportation methods include planes (for internal flights), private vans, public buses, 4x4 vehicles, and extensive walking.
  • What is the Planeterra Foundation?

Planeterra International Foundation is a non-profit organization that helps local communities earn income from tourism by developing and supporting small community-owned businesses, empowering Indigenous people, women, and youth, and protecting the environment. An optional $1/day donation program supports these projects.
  • Can I do laundry during the trip?

Laundry facilities are offered by some hotels for a charge. There will be times when you may need to do your own laundry, so bringing non-polluting/biodegradable soap is suggested.
  • What is the policy on illegal drugs and sex work?

Illegal drugs will not be tolerated, as they contravene local laws and put the group at risk. The exploitation of people in the sex trade is also completely contrary to the tour's philosophy. Group leaders have the right to expel any member of the group if these rules are violated.
  • Is an emergency fund recommended for this trip?

Yes, it is recommended to have access to at least an additional USD $200 (or equivalent) as an 'emergency' fund, to be used when circumstances outside of our control (e.g., a natural disaster) require a change to the planned route.
