  • It was a wonderful trip. I loved the fact that we were able to leave the tourist crowds behind and that we were able to see some of the 'real' Japan. I loved the small towns. It was a wonderful experience. I like that it is a small group with a guide that is local and knows how the people really live.

  • An amazing tour, a way to see lots of Japan in a relatively short period of time. It was good to see some of the 'real' Japan, the back roads and countryside was a privilege. The homestay in Haji was amazing and I would go back there on holiday to that town. I've been on 2 G Adventures tours including this one and both have been exceptional experiences.

Frequently asked questions

  • What kind of experience can I expect on this tour?

This tour takes you off the beaten path to explore destinations often overlooked, offering a well-rounded glimpse into Japan's past and present. You'll visit the treasured Matsumoto Castle, learn about samurai culture, cycle through the quaint city of Hagi, and immerse yourself in local culture with a community homestay. It also includes time to explore Tokyo and Kyoto.
  • What type of accommodation is provided during the tour?

The tour includes 8 nights in hotels and 2 nights in a community homestay (multi-share). Please note that Japanese hotel rooms are typically small, and traditional inns (Ryokan/Minshuku) may have shared bathing facilities. Some properties with two stories may not have elevators.
  • What forms of transportation are used on this trip?

We primarily use public transportation, including bullet trains (Shinkansen), local trains, buses, subways, and bicycles, along with a significant amount of walking. The efficient train network is a key part of the experience.
  • What is the group size for this tour?

The maximum group size is 15 travelers, with an average of 12.
  • Are there any age restrictions for joining this tour?

You must be 18 to travel unaccompanied. For minors traveling with a guardian over 21 years old, the minimum age is 12. There is no maximum age for this tour.
  • What meals are included in the tour price?

The tour includes 3 breakfasts, 1 lunch, and 3 dinners. Included breakfasts are typically Asian style, consisting of noodles or congee, or bread and eggs.
  • Is travel insurance required for this trip?

Yes, travel insurance is compulsory to participate in any of our trips. You will need a minimum coverage of USD 200,000 for repatriation and emergency rescue, and it is strongly recommended to cover personal liability, cancellation, curtailment, and lost luggage.
  • Are international flights included in the tour price?

No, international flights are generally not included in the price of your tour.
  • What if I am a solo traveler? Is there an extra cost?

We believe single travelers should not have to pay more. Our group trips are designed for shared accommodation, and single travelers are paired in twin or multi-share rooms with someone of the same sex for the duration of the trip, so there is no single supplement.
  • What are the key activities and visits included in the tour?

Included activities feature a visit to the Hagi Community Homestay, a traditional paper-making lesson in Mihomisumi, a modern Tokyo walking tour, a visit to Zenkoji Temple in Nagano, the Jigokudani Monkey Park, Matsumoto Castle, a Hagi cycling tour, Tottori sand dunes, Tottori fish market, and the Fushimi Inari Taisha shrine. • What should I know about physical fitness and mobility for this tour?

This tour requires an average level of fitness and mobility. You should be able to walk without assistance, climb 3-4 flights of stairs, step on and off small boats, and carry your own luggage. On average, tours in Japan involve about 15,000 steps a day.
  • Are there any cultural considerations regarding tattoos in Japan?

Tattoos are not common or widely accepted in Japan. While there is no cause for concern, please do your best to cover your tattoos when possible, as you may not be permitted to enter public spas or onsens (hot springs).
  • What are the luggage restrictions due to train travel and transfers?

Luggage for Shinkansen bullet trains must be less than 160cm in total (height + width + depth), similar to airline carry-on size. Larger luggage (160-250cm) may incur a fee and is subject to availability. You must be able to carry your luggage unassisted. Also, during the trip, your main luggage will be sent via takkyubin service (luggage transfer) for approximately 24 hours (e.g., to Hagi and then to Tottori), so you'll need a separate overnight bag.
  • What is the tipping custom in Japan and for the tour leader?

Tipping for service (in restaurants, taxis, etc.) is not practiced in Japan and may cause confusion. However, tipping your Chief Experience Officer (CEO) is standard in the travel industry to recognize excellent service; a guideline of $5-7 USD per person, per day, is suggested, though the final amount is entirely up to you.
  • What is a 'CEO' (Chief Experience Officer) on this tour?

A CEO (Chief Experience Officer) accompanies all group trips to manage logistics, provide information on the places visited, offer suggestions for activities and dining, and introduce you to local culture. They have a broad general knowledge of the countries but are not traditional guides, and local guides are sometimes used for specific expertise.
