Itinerary
Day 1
Arrival in Quito
Once you have arrived in Quito, make your way to the hotel. Set high in the Andes and straddling the equator, Quito is one of South America’s most atmospheric capitals. Its historic centre is among the best-preserved colonial quarters on the continent and has been recognised as a UNESCO World Heritage Site for its churches, plazas and centuries-old architecture.
Depending on your arrival time, you may wish to head out and begin exploring independently. You can wander through the old town, visit a local café, or simply relax after your journey and adjust to the altitude.
Later in the day, we gather at 6 PM at the hotel to settle in and prepare for the journey ahead. This first day is designed to ease you into Ecuador and provide time to rest before the adventure begins.
Day 2
Cotopaxi National Park Trek
Quito - Cotopaxi National Park - Isinlivi. Today we head into Cotopaxi National Park for our first trek in the Ecuadorian Andes and an important acclimatisation day. We begin by walking through the high-altitude páramo landscape around the Limpiopungo Lagoon, set at around 3,800 metres on the lower slopes of Rumiñahui Volcano.
As we circle the lagoon, we are rewarded with outstanding views of Cotopaxi, the highest active volcano in the world. This vast open terrain is home to a surprising amount of wildlife, and we may spot wild horses, cattle and a variety of Andean birdlife along the way. The route is mostly flat, allowing us to ease into trekking at altitude while taking in the dramatic scenery.
After completing our walk, we drive on to the small mountain village of Isinliví, where we settle into our lodge for the night. This evening gives us time to rest and adjust to the altitude, and our guide will talk through the days ahead and answer any questions about the trek.
Trekking time: approximately 2 hours on mostly flat terrain
Distance: 8 km
Day 3
Trekking Through the Toachi Canyon
Isinlivi - Chugchilan. After breakfast, we begin our trek through the striking landscapes of the Toachi Canyon, following narrow trails used by local communities. Along the way, we pass small villages and cultivated fields that offer a glimpse into everyday Andean life.
We descend into the canyon to the Toachi River before climbing steadily back up towards the highlands. The changing terrain and varied viewpoints make this a rewarding walk. By the afternoon, we arrive in Chugchilán, a small village set within the Quilotoa Loop, where we have time to explore and connect with the local community.
Trekking time: approximately 4+ hours
Distance: 13.5 km
Day 4
Ascending to the Quilotoa
Chugchilan – Quilotoa – Chimborazo. Early this morning, we set out along ancient footpaths that link remote Andean communities. These trails are still used by locals to transport goods and travel between villages, and along the way, we may witness traditional bartering practices that remain an integral part of daily life.
Our route takes us down into deep canyons before a steady ascent to the rim of the Quilotoa crater. On reaching the top, we are rewarded with spectacular views over the vivid blue waters of Quilotoa Lake. We enjoy time at the crater, including a picnic lunch overlooking this remarkable natural landmark.
Later in the day, we transfer by road to a historic hacienda in the foothills of Chimborazo Volcano, where we settle in for the evening surrounded by classic Andean landscapes.
Trekking time: approximately 5 hours
Distance: approximately 11 km
Day 5
Exploring Chimborazo National Park
Chimborazo National Park - Banos. We have an early start as we travel through highland valleys and rural farming communities towards Chimborazo Volcano, Ecuador’s highest peak. On clear days, the snow-capped summit dominates the surrounding landscape.
On arrival in Chimborazo National Park, we set out on a short but memorable hike, ascending to around 5,000 metres where the glacier begins. This stark volcanic environment is home to specialised wildlife, and we keep watch for vicuñas, Andean condors and other high-altitude bird species.
After our hike, we enjoy a picnic in this dramatic setting before continuing our journey east. By late afternoon, we arrive in the lively town of Baños, set beneath the active Tungurahua Volcano.
Trekking time: approximately 2 to 2.5 hours
Day 6
Trekking in Llanganates National Park
Banos - Llanganates National Park - Banos. This morning, we head into the remote landscapes of Llanganates National Park, an area renowned for its wild scenery and enduring legends. Our trek begins at around 3,200 metres and gradually climbs higher as we move through changing vegetation zones.
As we hike deeper into the park, we are rewarded with expansive views of Tungurahua Volcano and, weather permitting, the distant peak of Sangay. This region is steeped in folklore, with stories of hidden Inca treasure adding an air of mystery to the journey.
After completing our trek, we return to Baños. The remainder of the day is free for you to relax in the hot springs, enjoy a spa treatment or explore the town at your own pace.
Trekking time: approximately 6 hours
Day 7
Waterfalls of the Pastaza Valley & Return to Quito
Banos - Quito. Today, we explore the landscapes surrounding Baños as we follow the famous road of waterfalls through the Pastaza Valley. Our first stop is the Bride’s Veil waterfall, where we cross the river by cable car for views into the gorge below.
From here, we continue on foot, hiking down through cloud forest to reach the powerful Pailón del Diablo waterfall. The trail brings us close to the cascade, where the spray and sound highlight the raw energy of the landscape.
After our hike, we begin the scenic drive back to Quito, travelling through changing scenery as we leave the cloud forest behind and return to the capital.
Day 8
Departure from Quito
After our final breakfast, you say goodbye to your fellow travellers and tour leader before making your way to the airport for your onward flight.
