Itinerary

  • Day 1

    Welcome to Tokyo!

Welcome to Tokyo! In the afternoon, you will meet your group for a trip briefing with your Adventure Leader, who will share what to expect in the days ahead and offer useful tips to help you explore Japan with confidence.

From there it is straight into a welcome dinner with your group – the perfect way to break the ice and tuck into your very first taste of Japan’s incredible cuisine.

In the evening, you can choose to keep the night going with your new travel crew at a local bar or take it easy and get some rest before the adventure begins in full swing tomorrow.

  • Day 2

Sushi Masterclass, Meiji Shrine, Harajuku & Shibuya

Today begins with one of our unmissable experiences, a hands-on sushi making class. Learn the art of sushi from local experts, roll your own creations and enjoy them for lunch.

In the afternoon we step into the calm of Meiji Shrine, one of Tokyo’s most iconic spots. Dedicated to Emperor Meiji, who defeated the samurai, brought an end to the shogunate and played a major role in modernising Japan.

Next stop: Harajuku. This is Tokyo’s fashion hub where anything goes, from technicolour hair to punk, goth and everything in between. Wander the lively backstreets, dig through quirky vintage shops and grab a bite at one of the area’s iconic eateries.

From there, it’s time to experience Shibuya Crossing, the busiest pedestrian intersection in the world. Thousands of people cross from every direction at once! It’s a sight you will not forget. While you’re there, make sure to spot the famous Hachiko statue.

Later this afternoon is yours to explore. Fancy something exhilarating? Try Kartoon Karting and zoom through Tokyo’s streets in a go kart for a one of a kind adventure.

  • Day 3

Yanaka Ginza, Akihabara, Sensoji Temple & Optional Sumo Feast

We start the day at Yanaka Ginza, a charming old school shopping street filled with local stalls, quirky shops and delicious street food, the perfect place to experience everyday Tokyo life.

Next, we head to Akihabara, Japan’s legendary Electric Town. This neon wonderland is packed with gaming arcades, anime stores and endless gadget shops. Challenge your travel buddies to an arcade game or visit one of Akihabara’s famous maid cafes for a fun and uniquely Japanese pop culture experience.

Then it is on to the historic Asakusa district, home to the iconic Sensoji Temple. Wander along Nakamise dori street with its traditional stalls before stepping into Tokyo’s oldest Buddhist temple.

In the evening, you can opt for a special sumo experience where you will meet former wrestlers, learn about their traditions and enjoy a hearty chanko nabe dinner, the meal that fuels the champions.

The rest of the night is yours to explore. Ask your Adventure Leader for suggestions or head to Hoppy Street, where lively izakayas and local drinks like doburoku give you a real taste of Tokyo nightlife.

  • Day 4

Mt Fuji, Arakura Hike & Oshino Hakkai Village

Today we leave the city behind for a day of fresh air, beautiful scenery and traditional charm. From Shinjuku Station we take the train to Shimoyoshida and hike up to the stunning Arakura Fuji Sengen Shrine. With its famous pagoda framed by Mount Fuji on a clear day, it is one of the most photographed spots in Japan, and you will see why when you get there.

Next, a short public transport journey takes us to Oshino Hakkai, a traditional village in the Fuji Five Lakes region. This peaceful spot is famous for its crystal-clear ponds fed by Mt Fuji’s snowmelt, and you can wander through the old, thatched roof houses that feel like stepping back in time. If the skies are clear, you will even catch some epic views of Mt Fuji itself. We will stop here for lunch and have time to explore the village at your own pace.

In the afternoon we’ll return to Tokyo, arriving in time for a free evening. It’s your last night in the city, so make it count – whether that means a final ramen stop, shopping spree or bar hopping with your travel crew.

  • Day 5

Shimoda Bay Cruise, Perry Road & Onsen Night

This morning we say goodbye to Tokyo and travel to the coastal town of Shimoda. We store our bags in lockers and travel light for our night away. We begin with the Shimoda Bay Sightseeing Cruise, a short boat ride offering sweeping views of the coastline and stories of the port’s fascinating history. You might even get the chance to feed birds from the back of the boat.

Back on land, we stroll along Perry Road, a stone paved street lined with traditional houses, cosy cafes and unique shops. We will also stop by the Museum of Black Ships, home to over 3,000 original artefacts that tell the story of Japan’s transition from isolation to international trade. Nearby, we visit Ryosenji Temple, the peaceful site where the Treaty of Shimoda was signed.

After some free time to explore, we take the Shimoda Ropeway for a panoramic view of the city, coastline and mountains. If the timing is right, we may even catch a beautiful sunset over the bay.

This evening we head to our accommodation in Shimoda, where you can finish the day with a relaxing onsen experience, the perfect way to unwind.

  • Day 6

Kyoto Bound - Bullet Trains & Karaoke Energy

This morning we say goodbye to Shimoda and take the train to Atami. After some free time for lunch and a chance to explore this seaside city, we board the famous shinkansen bound for Kyoto.

On arrival, your Adventure Leader will take you on a short orientation walk to get your bearings and ease into the more tranquil vibe of Japan’s cultural capital.

In the evening it is time to swap zen for zany! Join your travel crew and belt out your favourite tunes at a classic Japanese karaoke spot. It is the perfect way to kick off your stay in Kyoto!

  • Day 7

Tea Ceremony, Kiyomizu-dera Temple & Gion Geisha Traditions in Kyoto

We start the day by experiencing the calm and beauty of a traditional Japanese tea ceremony. Watch as the instructor carefully performs the rituals of preparing and serving matcha before trying your hand at whisking your own bowl of tea. Sweet treats are served alongside, and if you wish, you can rent a kimono for the full experience.

Next, we visit Kiyomizu dera, one of Japan’s most famous Buddhist temples and a UNESCO World Heritage site. Take in the panoramic views from its wooden stage before enjoying some free time for lunch at the lively shops surrounding the temple.

In the afternoon, your Adventure Leader will take you on a short walk through Gion, Kyoto’s famous geisha district filled with narrow streets, tea houses and traditional wooden machiya. From there, the evening is yours to enjoy as you wish, whether that means tasting your way through Nishiki Market, browsing the shops of Teramachi, visiting the Samurai Ninja Museum or catching a show at the GEAR non verbal theatre.

  • Day 8

Kyoto Your Way - Temples, Trails & Japanese Calligraphy

This morning is yours to enjoy Kyoto in your own way. Your Adventure Leader will be available on WhatsApp or by phone if you need any tips or support, but the day is completely up to you. You could:

Stroll the Philosopher’s Path and admire the serene temples along the way. Head west to Arashiyama for the famous bamboo grove, a hike up to Monkey Park or a visit to Tenryu ji Temple. Take a trip to Nara to see the mighty Todaiji Temple and meet the friendly deer in Nara Park. Opt for cultural experiences in Kyoto like another tea ceremony, a kimono rental, or a visit to the Ninja and Samurai Museum. Just remember Kyoto is hugely popular, especially during cherry blossom season, so book early to avoid missing out.

Or, if you would rather, simply ask your Adventure Leader for more suggestions to uncover hidden gems in the city or even beyond.

In the afternoon we regroup for a hands-on calligraphy class. Guided by a local teacher, you will learn the graceful art of Japanese brush writing and create your own keepsake to take home.

  • Day 9

Kyoto Cycling, Zen Meditation, Golden Pavilion & Okonomiyaki Village

Get ready for a true Dragon moment as we hop on bikes and explore Kyoto like a local. Our half day ride takes us through peaceful backstreets to a tranquil Zen temple, where you will take part in a meditation session led by a Buddhist monk, followed by a calming tea ceremony.

After this peaceful start to the day, we stop for a quick lunch before visiting one of Kyoto’s most famous landmarks, the Golden Pavilion at Kinkaku ji. With its shimmering reflection in the surrounding pond, it is a sight you will never forget.

This afternoon we swap pedals for speed as the bullet train whisks us further west to Hiroshima. After checking in at the hostel, take some time to rest before the evening’s option to join your group for dinner at Okonomiyaki Village. Here you can watch skilled chefs prepare Hiroshima’s signature dishes right in front of you.

  • Day 10

Miyajima Island, Mt Misen Ropeway & Hiroshima Peace Memorial

We begin the day with a train and short ferry ride to Miyajima Island, home to the famous torii gate that appears to float on the water. When the tide is low, you can walk across the sand and stand right beneath this iconic landmark.

Next, ride the Miyajima Ropeway up Mt Misen for incredible views over the island. You can choose to take the ropeway both ways or hike back down through the forest trails if you are feeling adventurous.

After some free time for lunch, we catch the ferry back to the mainland and pay a powerful visit to the Hiroshima Peace Memorial Museum and the Atomic Bomb Dome. It’s a moving experience that offers a deeper understanding of the city’s past and its message of peace.

We then return to the hostel in Hiroshima for a free evening to rest or explore at your own pace.

  • Day 11

Osaka Bound - Kurashiki Bikan Quarter & Korakuen Garden

We kick start the day by boarding the bullet train from Hiroshima to Okayama, where our first stop is the Kurashiki Bikan Quarter. This beautifully preserved Edo period district is full of charm, with canals, traditional streets and cosy cafes. Take your time to wander at your own pace, sample local sweets and browse the souvenir shops.

Next, we visit Korakuen Garden, one of the Three Great Gardens of Japan. With its seasonal beauty and wide open lawns, it offers a peaceful escape and a glimpse into the Edo period.

After collecting our luggage at the station, we continue by shinkansen to Shin Osaka. Once we have dropped our bags, the evening is yours to enjoy. You can relax after a full day or explore Shinsekai, Osaka’s retro entertainment district. Be sure to try one of the city’s most loved specialties, kushikatsu, skewered and deep fried treats that are perfect for sharing with new friends.

  • Day 12

Osaka Your Way – Shinsaibashi, Osaka Castle & National Museum

We begin the day with a short orientation walk to Shinsaibashi, one of Osaka’s most vibrant shopping streets. Spend some time exploring the lively atmosphere, browsing the shops and enjoying lunch at one of the many local eateries.

The afternoon is yours to discover more of Osaka at your own pace. You could:

Explore the iconic Osaka Castle and enjoy sweeping city views from its tower. Browse, shop and snack your way through Umeda’s buzzing streets. Step into the National Museum to uncover more of Japan’s rich history and culture.

This evening we come together for a special farewell dinner. It is the perfect chance to share memories, swap photos and reflect on the unforgettable journey you have had across Japan with your travel crew.

  • Day 13

    Osaka to Seoul

Today, you’ll travel from Japan to South Korea for the next leg of your adventure! After your flight to Seoul and check-in, the rest of the day is yours to settle in and explore the city at your own pace.

  • Day 14

Taekwondo Class, Myeongdong & Namsan Mountain

Get ready to start your South Korea adventure tour by meeting your guide and group at the hostel in the afternoon! Listen to a pre-departure briefing to learn everything you need to know about your trip, including some basic Korean phrases to help you along the way.

After this, it’s time for your first unmissable activity – a Taekwondo training session! Test your skills and see if you’ve got what it takes to be the best in class.

After working up an appetite, we’ll head back into Myeongdong for a special welcome dinner with your group. Enjoy a delicious first meal together, getting to know your fellow travellers and toasting to the start of an incredible adventure!

Next, you’ll make your way to the top of Namsan Mountain by cable car, where you can admire spectacular views of Seoul lit up at night. Recognised as the most popular location in Seoul for couples, wander through the ‘padlocks of love’ locked at the base of Seoul N Tower, representing visitors’ endless love! If you want an even better view of the city, you can head to the top of the Tower.

Later, take the cable car down and enjoy a walk back to your accommodation in the district of Myeongdong. Spend some time strolling around and exploring the area or grab an early night to prepare for your first full day tomorrow!

  • Day 15

    Gyeongbokgung Palace & Hanok Village

Today we start early to explore Seoul’s rich history. Take public transport to Gyeongbokgung Palace to watch the Royal Guard Changing Ceremony before stepping inside the palace grounds. For an extra touch of tradition, you can rent a hanbok, traditional Korean clothing, to fully immerse yourself in the experience.

You’ll then be given time to explore Korea’s capital at your leisure. While your guides will have plenty of suggestions, you may wish to:

Explore the delights of Bukchon Hanok Village and Insadong Art Street, before escaping the hustle and bustle of the city with a walk down the Cheonggyecheon stream, an area of tranquility and relaxation restored during an urban renewal project. Explore the Gangnam District – a shopper’s paradise! Why not rent a bike and enjoy a leisurely ride along the Han River? Enjoy scenic views of Seoul’s skyline, parks, and riverside paths via two wheels! Opt to join some of your group in a personalised perfume-making class*, where you’ll learn about different fragrance notes, experiment with unique scent combinations, and create a signature perfume to take home as a memorable keepsake of your time in Seoul.

In the evening, you will have some free time to explore Seoul further, to find yourself something delicious to eat. Why not try grabbing food and drinks in the Euljiro/Itaewon area?

  • Day 16

DMZ, meet a North Korean defector and K-Pop Class

Today, you will visit the Korean Demilitarized Zone. Climb aboard a bus, taking you an hour north of Seoul to Imjingak, where you’ll have the chance to grab some breakfast.

Pay a visit to Dora Observatory where you can see the nearest North Korean villages through binoculars. If you’re lucky, you might even see some people in the streets. Next, descend into the 3rd Tunnel created by North Koreans, taking you as close as 170m to North Korea!

After, you will begin your journey back to Seoul and make the most of a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to talk to a North Korean defector. Back in Seoul, try out a K-Pop Dance Class and then enjoy a night out in Hongdae, best known for its endless restaurant and bar options.

  • Day 17

    Temple Stay Experience at Geumsunsa

We start the day with a relaxed morning in Seoul, giving you time to unwind, explore or simply enjoy the city atmosphere. In the afternoon, we travel by private transfer to Geumsunsa Temple for an authentic temple stay. Arriving mid afternoon, there will be time to settle in before joining a guided tour and enjoying a peaceful vegetarian dinner as you ease into temple life.

As evening falls, join in the drum and bell rituals, Buddhist chanting, and a soothing singing bowl meditation. Take a moment to reflect or explore the serene grounds before turning in early, recharged for tomorrow’s adventures.

  • Day 18

Buddhist Ceremony, Seoraksan National Park & Food Markets

Start your morning the traditional way with a peaceful Buddhist dawn chanting ceremony, before tucking into a simple temple breakfast. Once you’ve cleaned your room and handed back your temple stay uniform, it’s time to say goodbye to monastery life. From here, you’ll make your way to the private bus meeting point and set off on the next leg of your adventure to Sokcho.

Arriving on Korea’s north eastern coast, we head straight into the beautiful landscapes of Seoraksan National Park by late morning. Set out on a rewarding hike to Ulsanbawi Rock for breathtaking panoramic views. If you prefer an easier route, follow the scenic waterfall trail, take the cable car to another viewpoint, or enjoy both. After the hike, refuel with lunch near the park entrance before taking the bus to Sokcho town, where you will ride a gatbae across the river to Abai, a small village founded by North Korean refugees.

In the evening, follow your Adventure Leader on a food market tour, exploring Sokcho’s best culinary hotspots before heading into the local fish markets for dinner. Whether you choose fresh seafood straight from the market or opt for one of the town’s best-loved restaurants, such as Manseok, famous for its sticky sweet and sour boneless fried chicken, this is the perfect way to immerse yourself in Sokcho’s incredible food scene.

Later, round off the evening with a traditional liquor tasting, hosted by your Adventure Leader, to experience the flavours of Korea in a truly local way.

  • Day 19

    Cycling Tour of Gyeongju

This morning we set off early, taking the bus down the East Coast to Gyeongju, Korea’s ancient capital and one of its most historic cities. After arriving, drop off your bags and get ready for an afternoon full of exploration.

Set off on two wheels for a cycling tour* of Gyeongju’s old town. Together with your Adventure Leader, you’ll ride through the city’s charming streets, stopping at key highlights including the Chunmachong Ancient Tombs at Daereungwon Tumuli Park and Cheomseongdae, the oldest surviving astronomical observatory in East Asia. The guided cycling lasts around 45 minutes on flat roads, but you’re welcome to keep exploring on your bike afterwards if you’d like to discover more at your own pace.

*Can’t cycle? No worries – the old town is small and easy to navigate on foot, and about 90 minutes is enough to cover the main sights.

As evening approaches, opt to join your group for a traditional Korean set meal inside a hanok (traditional wooden house), where you’ll get to savour authentic flavours in a truly atmospheric setting (expect to pay around 17,000 KRW, excluding drinks). After dinner, the night is yours to explore at leisure. We recommend heading to Anapji Pond for its incredible illuminated views – a picture-perfect way to round off the day. Entrance costs just 3,000 KRW, and although your Adventure Leader may not join, clear directions will be provided.

  • Day 20

Gamcheon Culture Village & Marine Cable Car

This morning we make our way to Gyeongju Station to begin the journey to Busan on the high speed train. After arriving, we board a private bus to explore the city, starting with the must see Gamcheon Culture Village.

Next, we continue to Songdo to ride the Marine Cable Car and enjoy sweeping coastal views. From there, we head to BIFF Square in Nampo-dong, where you can sample delicious street food from local vendors, and be sure to try a Busan hotteok while you are here.

In the evening, we travel to our hostel in Haeundae where you can relax, unwind or explore the area at your own pace.

  • Day 21

Haedong Yonggungsa Temple & free afternoon

Head out for a day exploring Busan. First up, visit Haedong Yonggungsa Temple, a Buddhist temple nestled in the coastline’s cliffs.

Feeling in need of some more rejuvenation? You could head to Spa Land in Centum City, located in Busan’s largest shopping complex! Make the most of South Korea’s high-quality jjimjilbang while you’re here and treat yourself to saunas, cold rooms, jacuzzis and more.

Finally, enjoy the evening with your fellow travelers trying local delicacies. Once the sun sets, be sure to admire the light show on Gwangan Bridge from the shore or perhaps opt for an evening sightseeing boat cruise around the bay. Once you’re back on dry land – try your hand at karaoke!

  • Day 22

    Busan to Jeju

Enjoy a free morning to explore Busan – venture out on your own, or take part in some of our suggested activities. For example, you might enjoy a trip on the coastal railway, the Haeundae Blueline. Alternatively, you can visit the observatory of the second-tallest building in Korea and take in the views, or embark on the Igidae Coastal Walk and Oryukdo Skywalk. You may even just opt for a relaxing morning on the beach!

If you’d like to get one last dose of Korean culture in Busan, you could even try your hand at making the traditional staple, bibimbap, in a cooking class!

Later, you will collect your belongings from the hostel and make your way to the airport where you’ll catch a plane to Jeju Island. Once you’ve checked in at your accommodation in Seogwipo, feel free to spend your evening venturing into Olle Maeil Market or exploring the nightlife the city has to offer.

  • Day 23

Jjeongbang Waterfall & Jeju Olle Trail

Wake up on the beautiful island of Jeju and start your day with a trek along the Jeju Olle Trail, soaking in iconic coastal views and serene natural surroundings. Next, visit Jeongbang Waterfall, the only waterfall in Asia that flows directly into the ocean – a breath-taking sight to complete your morning.

Then, hike to Seongsan Ilchulbong, a UNESCO World Heritage Site formed by hydrovolcanic eruptions over 5,000 years ago. After taking in the panoramic views, you can enjoy an optional lunch by the volcano or catch a Haenyeo performance at 13:30 (please note this performance is subject to availability/weather dependent). Recognised by UNESCO as Intangible Cultural Heritage, the Haenyeo tradition reflects resilience, sustainability, and the deep bond between Jeju’s people and the sea. These incredible women, some in their 60s and 70s, dive without oxygen, embodying perseverance and the spirit of Jeju.

Returning to the hotel in the early afternoon, the rest of the day is yours to explore. You could:

    • Head to Jungmun Beach to catch some rays
    • Visit the beautiful Cheonjiyeon Waterfall
    • Explore the Maritime Park and Saeyeongyo Bridge For a wonderful end to the day, opt to visit The Cliff for a drink with a truly special view of the sunset.
  • Day 24

Jeju Yacht Tour & Farewell BBQ

Make the most of your second morning in the mesmerising Jeju by visiting the Daepo Jusangjeolli Cliffs, a striking volcanic rock formation shaped by nature over thousands of years. After taking in the dramatic coastal scenery, reboard the bus and head to the yacht sailing tour, where you’ll set sail on the open sea, relax in the fresh ocean air and enjoy the company of your fellow Dragons.

The afternoon is then yours to explore at your own pace – whether you choose to unwind, visit more of Jeju’s natural wonders, or ask our Adventure Leaders for their top recommendations. In the evening, gather for a farewell barbecue dinner, where you can sample Jeju’s famous black pork, watch the sun set over the island and, if you’re up for it, celebrate into the night by the seashore. Make the most of these final moments with your fellow travellers before saying annyeonghi gaseyo in the morning!

  • Day 25

You’ve reached the last day of your Japan & South Korea tour and the end of your Dragon Trip adventure! You can head back to Seoul, explore the wonders of Jeju Island further, or continue with your travels elsewhere.

Essential trip information

Our Important Notes and Packing List cover all essentials, from necessary equipment to inclusions, ensuring you're fully equipped and informed for this extraordinary adventure and more.

Frequently asked questions

  • Do I need to bring power converters?

The voltage in Japan is 100 Volts, which is different from North America (120V), Central Europe (230V) and most other places. Japanese electrical plugs have two, non-polarized pins, as shown above. They fit into North American outlets. Japanese power outlets are identical to (2-pin) North American outlets. While most Japanese outlets these days are polarized (as in one slot is slightly wider than the other), you can find non-polarized outlets in some places. South Korean electrical outlets use the same sockets as central Europe, so if you use any other type of plug, you will need to bring an adaptor. South Korea uses 230 volts and the plug sockets are Type C, featuring two round pins.
  • Do I need a sleeping bag or is linen supplied in the hostels?

    All bedding is provided.
  • Who looks after our bags when we’re on transport and/or day excursions?

The bags will be stored at the hostels where they are tagged and recorded. On a couple of occasions, they will be stored at storage facilities in railway stations.
  • What should I pack for my trip?

We strongly recommend packing very light for this trip. You can wash your clothes or pick up some supplies in the plentiful shop
  • Suitcase or backpack?

Suitcase is OK, but a backpack/hold-all is much more convenient.
  • What kind of restaurants will we go to?

Your Adventure Leader will always offer to take you for a group meal, where we go to a local restaurant, which we know is hygienic and has cheap and delicious food. If you are craving Western food, then there are lots of great options!
  • I’m a vegetarian/have allergies – will I be able to get the right food?

Yes! With so many food choices, Japan and South Korea can meet the needs of individuals with special dietary needs or requests. Just tell your Adventure Leader and they can help you find something suitable. You will probably discover a new dish that you love!
