Nepal Trekking
Nepal is arguably considered the greatest trekking destination on earth. The backdrop of course is the vast Himalaya with a range of 500 miles in Nepal from the Kali River (east) to the Tsita River and most of Nepal lies within the mountain range itself.
Here in Nepal are eight of the fourteen peaks over 8,000 meters including Everest and Annapurna. These peaks are of course for the advanced climbers but there are trekking options for everyone including beginners.
Some of the most popular yet challenging treks are to the base camps of the higher peaks. These treks are not climbs and do not include the summits but take you to the start point for summit attempts. Don’t be fooled though, even these treks can be tough, the base camp for mount Everest is over 5,000 meters!
The most popular treks are typically based around Everest, Annapurna or Langtang as well as some ‘off the beaten track’ treks too.
There are also some ‘easy’ peaks. They are of course not ‘easy’ but you don’t require technical climbing skills. Of these the most famous are the Island Peak at 6,160 meters and the Mera Peak which is 6,476 meters. Both would be considered beginners peaks. To give some context the highest peak in the UK is Ben Nevis at 1,350 meters and in the United States is Denali in Alaska at 6,160 meters.
At The Adventure People we work with local Nepalese partners to bring you some of the most stunning treks in the world. If you'd like to find out more or talk through some options please do not hesitate to contact our expert team.
Everest Base Camp
The most popular and iconic trekking destination in the world is mount Everest. We do not offer summit attempts! Just in case you're thinking about that. We suggest you seek a summit specialist.
We focus very much on the Everest Base Camp trekking options. Even the base camp is over 5,000 meters and is considered challenging (base camp is higher than the summit of Kilimanjaro!). Trekking to Everest Base Camp typical, involves a two week trip with trekking taking place over ten days.
The trek itself is around 65km in total, so over ten days your trek is 130km in total or around 13km per day.
Most people of average fitness will be able to manage the EBC trek with a little training, our team can answer any questions you may have about fitness levels.
Annapurna
Annapurna is one of the fourteen peaks over 8,000 meters. Lesser known that mount Everest, Annapurna is regarded as one of the most treacherous peaks to attempt with very sadly only two out of every three making it back down.
Luckily, we do not offer summit attempts but treks to the base camp and around Annapurna suitable for most people of average fitness.
Annapurna base camp lies at 4,130 meters, lower than the Everest base camp but still high and challenging (over x3 higher than the summit of Ben Nevis, the highest peak in the UK).
The trek length to Annapurna base camp is 67km each way, so 134km return over 10 or 11 days typically.
Please do contact our team if you'd lie t find out more.
Langtang
Langtang is certainly lesser known than both Everest and Annapurna but there are many good reasons to consider Langtang as a destination for a trekking adventure.
Langtang very sadly suffered badly during the 2015 Nepalese earthquake with many homes buried. Visitors then stayed away for quite some time but the local population have been working since to get everyone back on their feet. The people of Langtang don't' need or want sympathy, they want to welcome visitors to their beautiful village and help explore this stunning area.
A good reason to visit Langtang is the fact it is quiet and a little more wild than both Annapurna and Everest which see large numbers of tourists. If you want something of the beaten track then Langtang is a good place to consider.
When is the best time to trek?
Two trekking seasons dominate Nepal which are either pre-monsoon running between February and May and post-monsoon -which run from late September through to December.
The fauna and wildlife is best enjoyed in March and April, so if you want to see the beautiful rhododendrons in full bloom, aim for then.
The weather in the mountains though is unpredictable. October and November traditionally has clearer skies for those stunning views of the peaks but one can never be 100% sure.
As the weather is not always as expected and you may face sudden changes while you are trekking or even before you set off. Your guide will be keeping up to date of any changes and will amend your route accordingly. The main priority is keeping you safe.
How fit do I need to be?
The fitness level required varies with the difficulty of the trek you'd like to complete. If you're looking at Everest or Annapurna base camps or maybe a summit or Mera or Island peaks then we'd recommend a good level of fitness and some training to ensure you have the best possible experience.
Other treks might not require such fitness however we'd suggest having a quick chat with our expert team who will be able to provide some advice based on your specific adventure.
You certainly don’t need to be an elite athlete or have lots of previous experience but as the trek is not a technical climb. However we really do recommend some training to make the experience as enjoyable for you as possible.
Most operators that run these trips will require a self-assessment form and sometimes a doctor's sign off to ensure that you are able to take on the challenge.
Some treks are at altitude which can affect people very differently and it isn’t necessarily anything to do with age, fitness or previous experience. Most travellers will be affected moderately by the lower oxygen levels at altitude to some degree while trekking. Some ways to help this include drinking plenty of water so that you remain hydrated and avoiding having alcohol or smoking - both will impact your oxygen levels.
A very small number of people experience the more serious Acute Mountain Sickness. The tour leaders are all very experienced in managing these risks and will be trained in how to deal with this. They will be carrying the necessary first aid and medicines at all times.
Will I have a guide?
Yes. All of our treks in Nepal are guided. Most customers book onto a small group trek, typically around 10 people in size.
These are great for lots of reasons lot least the cost is kept down, wonderful for solo travellers to trek with others, it's safer, more fun and overall more enjoyable.
Some customers prefer a tailor made trek which is a private trek with a guide. These are great for people who'd like a private and unique experience. Prices are higher for any private or tailor made trek.
Will I need to carry all of my luggage?
The short answer is it is very unlikely. On almost all treks you're main luggage is transported for you and you'll carry a day pack only with items like warm clothes (if required0< camera, sun cream, hat, water etc).
