Gokyo Lakes Treks

Nepal is arguably considered the greatest trekking destination on earth. The backdrop of course is the vast Himalaya with a range of 500 miles in Nepal from the Kali River (east) to the Tsita River and most of Nepal lies within the mountain range itself.

Some of the most popular yet challenging treks are to the base camps of the higher peaks. These treks are not climbs and do not include the summits but take you to the start point for summit attempts. Don’t be fooled though, even these treks can be tough, the base camp for mount Everest is over 5,000 meters!

The Gokyo Lakes area in the Sagamatha National Park area of Nepal is one of the most popular for trekking adventures and certainly a wonderful way to reach Everest Base Camp (also known as EBC).

Named after the Gokyo Ri peak, there are 19 lakes in this region in total and there are two trekking routes. The treks are challenging. If you can manage the extra couple of days though then most people say it's worth it.

The lakes sit at an altitude of 4,700 to 5,000 and are a couple of days trekking from Namche Bazaar, part of the route to EBC.

At The Adventure People we work with local Nepalese partners to bring you some of the most stunning treks in the world. If you'd like to find out more or talk through some options please do not hesitate to contact our expert team.

  • EBC Treks

The trek to Everest Base Camp is truly a once in a lifetime trip, a goal for many mountaineers.

The trekking adventure starts in Kathmandu, Nepal, from here you will fly to Lukla where your Everest base camp trek starts. You will be trekking through valleys and high passes, on glaciers and plains, staying in local tea-houses along the way, meeting locals and learning about their culture.

The Everest base camp trek is not for the faint-hearted. We recommend a pretty good level of fitness as the majority of this trek is at altitude (it's high!) so even though distances are not long it is still one of our most challenging trips, even for experienced trekkers. The expert mountaineer guides are there to help, and most of our trips are trouble-free.

The scenery all the way is stunning with lush valleys, fascinating villages catering to expeditions to the peak itself and majestic snowy peaks surrounding you. Once you do reach Everest Base Camp and see Mount Everest peak - the tallest in the world, it is unlike anything you’ve experienced before It's an unforgettable achievement for all those who attempt it.

  • When is the best time to trek?

If you are thinking of doing the incredible Gokyo to Everest Base Camp trek, you should know that there are two distinct trekking seasons. The best months to trek to Everest base camp are pre-monsoon (February, March, April and May) and post-monsoon (late September, October, November and December) Of course, you can trek it outside of those times but bear in mind the conditions and weather will be more challenging, colder in Jan and Feb and much warmer and rainier in June - August.

Another thing to think about is that in April and May base camp itself will be busiest with expeditions getting ready for their attempt on the summit. This, of course, can be a very exciting time to be there. The weather in the mountains is unpredictable, but September - November traditionally have clearer skies for those stunning views of the peaks.

  • How fit do I need to be?

The fitness level required varies with the difficulty of the trek you'd like to complete. If you're looking at Everest or Annapurna base camps or maybe a summit or Mera or Island peaks  then we'd recommend a good level of fitness and some training to ensure you have the best possible experience.

Other treks might not require such fitness however we'd suggest having a quick chat with our expert team who will be able to provide some advice based on your specific adventure.

You certainly don’t need to be an elite athlete or have lots of previous experience but  as the trek is not a technical climb. However we really do recommend some training to make the experience as enjoyable for you as possible.

Most operators that run these trips will require a self-assessment form and sometimes a doctor's sign off to ensure that you are able to take on the challenge.

Some treks are at altitude which can affect people very differently and it isn’t necessarily anything to do with age, fitness or previous experience. Most travellers will be affected moderately by the lower oxygen levels at altitude to some degree while trekking. Some ways to help this include drinking plenty of water so that you remain hydrated and avoiding having alcohol or smoking - both will impact your oxygen levels.

A very small number of people experience the more serious Acute Mountain Sickness. The tour leaders are all very experienced in managing these risks and will be trained in how to deal with this. They will be carrying the necessary first aid and medicines at all times.

  • Will I have a guide?

Yes. All of our treks in Nepal are guided. Most customers book onto a small group trek, typically around 10 people in size.

These are great for lots of reasons lot least the cost is kept down, wonderful for solo travellers to trek with others, it's safer, more fun and overall more enjoyable.

Some customers prefer a tailor made trek which is a private trek with a guide. These are great for people who'd like a private and unique experience. Prices are higher for any private or tailor made trek.

  • Will I need to carry all of my luggage?

The short answer is it is very unlikely. On almost all treks you're main luggage is transported for you and you'll carry a day pack only with items like warm clothes (if required0< camera, sun cream, hat, water etc).

  • Who is this trek for?

We have a huge variety to trips to Base Camp depending on what you are after. There are tours that are specifically geared towards younger travellers - 18-29 year olds and others that have a higher average age.

Many of our trips don’t have a max or minimum age at all and travellers will be a variety of ages, all wanting to take in this incredible challenge.

The trips have a maximum size of 16, and strict ratios of porter and support match the group size.
