Japan Family Holidays
Japan is one of those rare destinations that genuinely works for families—equal parts fascinating, fun, and surprisingly easy to travel.
One minute you’re stepping into ancient temples and walking through quiet bamboo forests, the next you’re jumping on a bullet train or exploring neon-lit streets filled with food stalls, arcades, and anime culture. It’s this mix of old and new that makes Japan such a memorable place to travel with kids.
Our family adventure tours in Japan are designed to strike the right balance. You’ll explore the big highlights—Tokyo, Kyoto, Mount Fuji—but in a way that keeps things engaging for younger travellers too. That might mean learning calligraphy in a local workshop, trying your hand at taiko drumming, or cruising across Lake Ashi with views of Fuji in the distance.
Travel is typically in small groups, with experienced local guides who know how to keep things running smoothly (and interesting). It’s not about rushing from place to place—it’s about experiencing Japan in a way that works for families, with a pace that feels manageable and time built in to actually enjoy it.
You’ll also get a real sense of everyday life in Japan. Staying in traditional guesthouses, trying local food (yes, even the picky eaters usually find something they love), and experiencing cultural traditions like tea ceremonies or cooking classes all help bring the destination to life.
Whether you’re travelling with younger kids or slightly older children ready for something more immersive, Japan offers a different kind of family holiday—one that’s as educational as it is exciting.

Is Japan a family-friendly destination?
Yes — Japan is a very family-friendly destination, and it works especially well for families looking for a trip that feels adventurous without being chaotic.
On our Japan family tours, the pace is generally manageable, the trips are designed for children from age 5+ or 7+ depending on the itinerary, and the experiences mix culture with hands-on activities that keep younger travellers engaged.
Our itineraries include things like calligraphy lessons, taiko drumming, bullet train journeys, boat dinners, temple visits and time in neighbourhoods like Harajuku, which gives families a good balance of sightseeing and interactive experiences.
What is the best time of year to visit Japan with a family?
Japan can work well for families at different times of year, but spring and autumn are usually the easiest all-round choices thanks to milder temperatures and good sightseeing conditions. In practical terms, Japan is a destination you can enjoy year-round, but families often prefer to avoid the hottest and most humid part of summer if travelling with younger children.
If you’re planning around school holidays, it’s worth booking early for peak travel periods.
For the best fit, we’d always recommend choosing the right itinerary and pace for your family first, then matching dates around weather, crowd levels and school holidays.
And because seasonal conditions can vary, it’s worth checking the latest local travel information before you book.
Are there any specific health or vaccination requirements for traveling to Japan with children?
For official guidance, travellers should check the latest TravelHealthPro and FCDO advice before departure. The FCDO’s current Japan entry guidance directs travellers to TravelHealthPro for the latest medical entry requirements and recommended vaccinations. TravelHealthPro also advises travellers to book a pre-travel health appointment ideally 4 to 6 weeks before travel, although even a last-minute appointment can still be worthwhile.
For Japan specifically, whether any vaccines are recommended can depend on your child’s age, medical history, where you’re going and what kind of trip you’re taking. TravelHealthPro also notes that Japanese encephalitis vaccine is recommended for travellers at increased risk of exposure, rather than for every traveller as a blanket rule.
Travellers should check the latest advice from their own doctor or travel clinic and their local government health authority, as recommendations can differ by country.
What are the visa requirements for travelling to Japan with children?
Visa requirements depend on nationality, not just age, so children must still meet Japan’s entry rules in the same way as adults. For UK travellers on a full British citizen passport, the FCDO currently says you can get visa on arrival for tourism or business for up to 90 days, and you do not need to apply before travel. The FCDO also says your passport must be valid for the length of your stay, with no extra validity period required, and you need a blank page for your visa stamp.
For longer stays, or for travellers who do not meet the standard short-stay rules, Japan’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs says you should check which visa applies and what documents are required. Japan also has an eVISA system for certain eligible travellers and residents in selected countries and regions, but eligibility varies.
Always check the latest visa and entry requirements with the Japanese embassy or consulate and your own government’s travel advice before booking or travelling, as rules can change and may differ by passport.
What is the availability of child-friendly food options in Japan?
Japan is generally a good destination for families when it comes to food. Our family itineraries already include some meals and experiences that tend to work well for a wide range of ages, from savory pancakes and local dinners to interactive food experiences. Vegetarian options are available on all meals throughout the adventure.
In real terms, many families find Japan easier than expected because there are usually familiar, child-friendly staples available such as rice dishes, noodles, dumplings, fried items and simple grilled foods. One traveller notes that their 6-year-old “didn’t want to leave” and felt at home on the trip, with food forming part of that cultural experience.
That said, if your child has allergies, a restricted diet or very specific preferences, it’s still sensible to plan ahead and mention this before travel.
Are there activities every day?
Usually, yes — but not in a way that feels relentlessly overplanned. Our Japan family tours include regular sightseeing, cultural experiences and travel days, but they also build in some free time so families can slow the pace down or choose their own activities. For example, our 12-day tour includes guided experiences like Sensoji, a Tokyo Bay dinner cruise, a calligraphy lesson and Hakone sightseeing, while our 8-day itinerary includes activities such as taiko drumming, but also features a free afternoon in Kyoto where families can choose what suits them best.
So the honest answer is: there’s usually something planned on most days, but not every moment is scheduled. That balance tends to work well for families, because it keeps the trip interesting while still leaving room to rest, explore independently or adapt to how the kids are feeling.
