If you know anything about Patagonia it's probably that it has some of the most beautiful natural environments in the world. With its glaciers, mountain peaks and wildlife, it's a photographers dream! But what are some of the can't miss things to do while you're here? Below we break down 10 of our top things to do in Patagonia.
One of the more challenging treks in Patagonia but also the most rewarding. Get the best view of Torres del Paine’s three gigantic granite monolith towers and the blue glacial lake below. Although it’s a longer, steeper trek, at a maximum altitude of 2,850m you won’t have to worry about altitude sickness. And you’ll come home with the most beautiful photos and memories for life.
2. Glacier Grey
Go on a boat ride on what’s arguably one of the most spectacular sites in Patagonia – the Glacier Grey. Get up and close to the Glacier walls and take some incredible photos.
3. Go kayaking on the Grey River
Experience the kayaking tour of a lifetime pass the breath-taking glaciers, touching icebergs in the river leading to and in the Grey Lake.
Admire the views of Patagonia like never before in the stillness of the crystal blue waters.
One of the most memorable things to do while in Patagonia is to stay in an Ecocamp. These beautiful domes (who were the first eco camps in the world) are not only going to make your friends back home jealous but are super cosy and the perfect place to relax in after a long day of trekking.
5. Visit the penguins at Punta Tombo
If you want to be outnumbered by penguins (and who doesn’t?) Punta Tombo is the place to go. Although they only spend nesting time here and the rest of the time in Brazil. So make sure you visit between September – April if you want to see these loveable birds. But watch your step and look out for penguin babies and nesting holes in the ground.
Trek to the heart of the Paine Massif on the steep trails of the French Valley. Cross the hanging bridge with spectacular views of the valley below. The trek is demanding but the views will be unlike anything you’ve seen before.
7. Go whale watching
One thing not to miss while in Patagonia are the whales. There are four different types that live here; the Humpback, Blue, Southern right and the Orca whale. Take a boat trip off the coast of Argentina or Chile, in the marine parks and if you’re lucky you might see all four!
8. See the Salto Grande waterfall
Salto Grande or “Big Jump” is a stunning waterfall with waters falling 10 meters from the Nordenskjold lake. Take some beautiful photos of the fall and within a short walking distance get a perfect viewpoint of the mighty Los Cuernos horns.
9. The Mylodon Cave
Close to Torres del Paine National Park you’ll find the caves Cueva del Milodon. Discovered in 1896, with skin and bones from the extinct ground sloth Mylodon that gave the cave its name. Here you will find many rock formations including one called Silla del Diablo (Devil’s Chair) and beautiful panoramic views of Patagonia.
10. Go horseback riding
Few places in the world can compare to the scenery of Patagonia. So what better way to truly enjoy it than on horseback? Many farms here offer the opportunity to go on horseback riding tours guided by the Patagonian cowboys – the baqueanos.
