Thailand has been an extremely popular tourist destination for many years now. And what’s not to love? White beaches, cheap and delicious food, crystal clear waters and fascinating jungles perfect for adventures, it’s any holiday goers paradise! But lately some of us are just a bit hesitant to choose Thailand for our next trip, just because it is so popular! We may not want to be surrounded by our fellow country men, but don’t strike Thailand off your list just yet!

This stunning country has so much to offer if you just stray off the beaten track and visit some lesser known places. Here are some recommendations on where to go when the beaches of Phuket have become to crowded:

Ayutthaya

Capital of the kingdom of Siam from 1351 - 1767, you can tell this historic city has an infinite amount of stories to tell. Discover it with a visit to the Ayutthaya National Park - which is a UNESCO World Heritage Site where you can see ruin temples from the kingdom era. Another can’t miss in this region is the Wat Lokaya Sutha (Temple of the Reclining Buddha) and the Wat Phra Mahthat - a large stone Buddha head statue inserted in a gigantic tree, one of the most photographed items in the region.

Kanchanaburi

This beautiful village has a dark past from WW2, and is a must see for any history buff, with a railway that used to carry prisoners, nicknamed “Death Railway”. But these days it’s also the perfect destination for anyone interested in waterfalls, ruins and temples. The accommodation for some our tours here are in floating raft houses. Guaranteed to be a memory for life.

Hua Hin

Perhaps the more famous and busy destinations on our list, but we still thought it should be on here for anyone that wants to combine their adventures with some beach time. The King of Thailand has a residence here which speaks a lot of it’s beauty. Visit the local markets or take a Thai cooking class. Here you will get the traditionally Thai experience, but with fewer crowds than Phuket and some of the islands.

Sukhothai

This city’s name means “dawn of happiness” and we’re sure you will agree when you see it. Similar to Ayutthaya but with less crowds, Sukhothai also has a UNESCO World Heritage Site - the Sukhothai Historical Park with ruins from the 13th century.

There are also plenty of beautiful lakes and gardens to see in Sukhothai.

Some of our tours offer homestays here giving you the most local experience you can possibly get.

Chiang Mai

Called “The Rose of the North”, Chiang Mai has increased in popularity over the years but you still get the authentic, local feel and culture of Thailand here. Though you don’t have the beaches here, you will get temples, rainforests, waterfalls, elephant sanctuaries, traditional markets and more! There are also rivers here that are perfect for river rafting.
