Exploring the coast of Croatia in 10 days
Dates: 16
th September 2017 – 26
th September 2017
When picking Croatia as my next destination, back in 2017, I didn’t know what to expect and therefore kept my hopes low to avoid disappointment. Creating the itinerary required A LOT of time and research, mostly because it was not a place that people were raving about… as much as Thailand and Bali!!
– But I could not have been more surprised by its uniqueness and beauty, and by the end of the trip I was already regretting not extending my stay.
So, here is a list of places I visited with my boyfriend (and our rental car) for the whole duration of this trip. – Enjoy!!
Zadar
Duration: 2 days
Highlights:
-
Sea Organ
-
Light Show
-
Plitvice National Park
These 3 are a must when you are in this very small and beautify city.
The
Sea Organ and
Light Show are literally 10 steps from each other. You can head over to the sea organ (musical instrument installed in the sea, which plays music when the sea waves go into the tubes) in the afternoon/evening and watch the sunset. The soft music is super calming and makes for the most memorable sunset experiences.
Once the sun has set, you can walk over to the solar panels installed on the floor (in a form of a huge circle) and prepare for the most amazing light show ever!
– Locals say that it represents the motion of the solar system!
I’ve been to my fair share of national parks but NOTHING compares to
Plitvice National Park!
This place is HUGE so allow a full day here and be warned that it requires A LOT of walking, but it’s totally worth it. Have a look for yourself!
Split
Duration: 3 days
Highlights:
-
Krka National Park
-
Diocletian’s Palace
On our way to Split from Zadar, we stopped off at
Krka National Park.
This one is a little different from Plitvice as you can actually swim in a certain area.
DAYDREAM TIP: Both Krka and Plitvice require a lot of walking so I would recommend a whole day to spend in each park. If you want to get good shots then you’ve got to go early as both national parks are EXTREMELY busy during the day!!
Diocletian’s Palace
This was actually my favourite place, very picturesque and almost felt like it was stuck in time.
Diocletian’s Palace is a Roman ruin situated in the old town. You can do your own walking tour around it to find out more about its history. There are bars and restaurants inside to keep you refreshed. It is so small that once you have explored the palace you can move onto your next location unless you decide to stay longer and really enjoy it’s unique architecture.
If you come across the ‘Statue of Gregory’ situated just outside the palace, don’t forget to rub his big bronze toe whilst making a wish…. or not.
Hvar
Duration: 3 days
Highlights:
-
Fortica Tower
-
Beautiful beaches
Also very small but equally beautiful. Allow 1-2 days, depending on whether you want to take boat trips to surrounding islands (I didn’t, so 1 day was perfect for me). It’s main attraction is the
Fortica tower. You will get a very cool view of Hvar once you’re at the top:
Dubrovnik
Duration: 3 days
Highlights:
-
Old Town
-
Exploring the walls of the old town
I was looking forward to this pace to most! – as any Game of Thrones fan should, BUT I’m not going to lie, it was not what I expected AT ALL.
Parking inside the old town will cost you anything between 6-8 EUROS per hour!!! – So you’ve got to leave the car behind and take the bus instead.
Once we got there, we were overwhelmed by how many people there were and found it very difficult to take any photos. Having said that, Dubrovnik is a truly magnificent place and is very rich in history and culture. There are plenty of things to do here to keep you busy during the day.
Be sure to book yourself in for sunset kayaking just outside the walls of the Old Town, for a truly unforgettable experience. You can even go for a swim if you are feeling brave enough.
Thank you for getting this far and I hope you enjoyed reading.
