  • How long is the trek to Everest Base Camp?

The trek to Everest Base Camp is 130km from Lukla, your starting point. The daily trekking length differs and typically you'll be trekking for a total of 12 days.

  • How high is Everest Base Camp?

EBC is 17,958 feet high or 5,364 meters. Your starting altitude in Lukla is 9,200 feet or 2,800 meters.

Over the course of the trek you'll reach 5,364 meters.

  • Is the trek difficult?

The trek is not technically difficult but it is challenging, in this sense it's similar to a marathon. With enough training anyone of average fitness can take on the challenge.

  • What training will I need do do ?

We have a training guide for Everest which you can view by clicking here.

In summary you'll need some aerobic exercise and some trekking practice. We also consider nutrition and some practical advise like getting your gear early and wearing it in.

We can always talk you through this too.

  • When is the best time to trek to EBC?

The best trekking times are spring and autumn. The weather is a little cooler and make for ideal trekking conditions.

  • Where do I stay on the way?

You'll stay in tea houses along the route. These are basic accommodations but well maintained and certainly authentic. Here are some pictures to give you some idea:

  • What is the food like?

The food is basic but hearty! Lots of grain based foods and potatoes. We thought it a good idea to some some pictures, please forgive the quality as these are not high end restaurants! but they will give you a good idea of what to expect:

  • Will I carry my luggage ?

You'll only carry a day pack. Your luggage will be taken forward for you on each day.

  • How many people are in the group?

The group sizes can be from 1 to 16, typically the number is somewhere between 7 and 12.

  • Is the guide with us all the time?

Yes, actually you'll have two guides. A leader and an assistant guide. One guide will trek at the front of the group and one at the back, ideally keeping the group roughly together as the trek progresses.

  • How do I get to the start point?

You'll fly to Kathmandu. Flights to Kathmandu are not included in our prices but we can book them for you. Once in Kathmandu you'll fly to Lukla where the trek begins.

Flights from Kathmandu to Lukla are included in the price.

  • Will I need a visa?

This depends on your nationality and the rules at the time of your trek. Please check with the FCO.

  • How much money will I need?

If you're buying your meals every day we recommend £30 / $40 to £45 / $60 per day which should be more than enough.

You can always purchase treks with food already included which we recommend as it works our much better value.

  • What gear will I need?

A packing list is included with each of our trek brochures which are free to download.

    The basics are:

    Good walking shoes

Shorts / leggings / trekking trousers

    Trekking / lightweight top(s)

    Good walking socks

Hat / sunglasses / sun cream

    Waterproof

    Day Pack

    Camera

  • Do I need walking sticks?

Some people like to use trekking poles and others choose not to, it's very much a personal choice. Trekking poles are available upon your arrival at the start point and hiring them is cheap.

  • Is it cold at nighttime?

Yes. Obviously winter is colder than summer but you're at altitude and so the nights can be chilly. You'll be fine in the tea houses of course.
