Itinerary

  • Day 1

    Cairo

If you arrive early there are plenty of things to see and do in this amazing city. Visit the Saladin Citadel of Cairo one of the most popular attractions in the city, or to really get a feel for the place, get lost in the bazaars and join the locals for a coffee in a local cafe.

  • Day 2

    Cairo/Aswan

Catch an early morning flight to Aswan. Opt to explore the busy Aswan market or visit the beautiful Philae Temple. Later, board a boat to visit a Nubian village. Walk around the small community and enjoy a traditional dinner in a local home.

  • Day 3

    Aswan

Early in the morning, drive to the famed temples of Abu Simbel for a guided tour. Later, board our river cruise ship for the night.

  • Day 4

    Aswan/Kom Ombo

Following breakfast, we set sail. Before too long it is time for our first shore excursion, with a visit to Kom Ombo, a temple dedicated to Sobek the crocodile god. It still contains an ancient mummified crocodile.

  • Day 5

    Kom Ombo/Luxor

On the evening of day 5 our boat will moor overnight just outside of Luxor.

However, please note that sometimes the ship is directed to arrive in Luxor earlier on day 5 and therefore, the free time on board on this day will be swapped with the activities on day 7. Day 7 will then become a free day to explore Luxor on your own.

  • Day 6

    Luxor

Today your journey takes you to the West Bank to enjoy a guided visit to the Temple of Hatshepsu. Later, you will meet your student-guide at the Funtasia Project Center where together you will bike through the village to visit the community. The group will then return to the centre to learn about the Planeterra project at this location over tea with your guide. Then, visit the Valley of the Kings and the Colossi of Memnon before having lunch with a local family on the West Bank of the Nile. On the way back to the hotel, stop at an Alabaster factory and watch as the manufacturer's own hands mold, shape, and reshape the rocks until they end up with stunning sculptures, statues, candle holders, etc. The remainder of the day is at your leisure.

  • Day 7

    Luxor

Enjoy an excursion to the magnificent temples of Karnak and Luxor. In the afternoon, use free time to explore the bazaar, museums or opt to take a guided tour of the temples of Habu, Ramsseum and Deir El Medina.

  • Day 8

    Luxor/Alexandria

Catch a flight back to Cairo in the morning. Stop for a tour inside the monasteries of Wadi Natrun en route to the historic Mediterranean city of Alexandria. Enjoy a free afternoon at your leisure to explore.

  • Day 9

    Alexandria

We have plenty of time to explore all the incredible sites this ancient city has to offer. Founded by Alexander the Great around 331BC, Egypt's only Mediterranean city is characterized by a distinctly European atmosphere and a refreshing sea breeze. Don't miss the chance to enjoy an optional seafood dinner at one of the city's many outdoor seaside restaurants this evening.

  • Day 10

    Alexandria/Cairo

Head back to Cairo and explore the treasures of the Egyptian Museum. Enjoy lunch at your leisure in one of the many local restaurants in the area. Afterwards, pay a visit to Khan el-Khalili, a famous bazaar and souk in the historic center of Cairo. The remainder of the evening will be at your leisure.

  • Day 11

    Cairo

We begin with one of the key highlights of any visit to Egypt, the Great Pyramids of Giza. While once located in remote desert, they now touch the suburbs of modern Cairo. Also visit the mysterious Sphinx, with its lion’s body and man’s face.

  • Day 12

    Cairo

    Depart at any time.

  • It was the greatest trip of my life. Good group, great CEO, incredible memories and pictures. I just wish I had more time to process everything. Oh yeah, and The Metropole Hotel in Alexandria was by far and away the best accommodation. It was just very hot, and a lot of flies, so I wouldn't go back to Egypt in the summer, but the winter. The experiences of authentic native life were great too. I was very lucky to have a neighbour who's a travel agent to hook me up with all this. Jenifer Najak. My only complaint about the entire trip was that it was too fast, with too much to process. There wasn't enough time at the locations, to rest at them and think about them, because there were so many great locations. Which was great in and of itself, and only inspires me to return to Egypt

  • Are meals included in the tour price?

Yes, the tour includes 11 breakfasts, 4 lunches, and 4 dinners. Generally, meals are included when there isn't a wide choice of eating options, allowing flexibility for other meals.
  • What modes of transportation are used during the tour?

Transportation on this trip includes a mixture of private air-conditioned van, felucca (traditional Nile sailboat), Nile cruise boat, plane for domestic flights, and walking.
  • Who will be leading the tour group?

The group trip is accompanied by a certified Egyptologist who serves as your Chief Experience Officer (CEO). The CEO provides information on the regions, suggests activities, recommends local eateries, and introduces you to local people. Local guides are also utilized for more specific knowledge at sites.
  • What is the typical group size for this tour?

The maximum group size is 16 participants.
  • What is the physical rating of this tour?

This tour has a physical rating of 2. Travelers should be able to walk without assistance, climb 3-4 flights of stairs, step on and off small boats, and carry their own luggage at a minimum.
  • What kind of local interactions can I expect?

The tour offers unique local living moments such as a boat ride to a Nubian village with a traditional meal in Aswan and lunch with a local family in Luxor. You'll also have opportunities to explore local markets (souks) and visit the Funtasia Project Center to learn about a Planeterra initiative.
  • What currency is used in Egypt and how can I manage money during the trip?

The currency used in Egypt is the Egyptian Pound (EGP). ATMs are available in main cities and generally accept Visa and Mastercard. It's advisable to carry both card types. Cash is recommended for situations where ATMs aren't accessible. Euros, British Pounds, and US Dollars are easily exchanged. Please ensure US Dollar notes are new and in good condition (post-1996).
  • How is tipping handled on this tour?

Tipping is customary in the Middle East. To simplify, your CEO will collect a 'Tipping Kitty' at the start of the tour, estimated between $78.00-$85.50 USD per person for the entire trip (excluding optional activities and the CEO). This kitty will cover tips for service providers for the group as a whole. Tipping your CEO is also appreciated, with a guideline of $6-9 USD per person per day.

Consult your travel doctor well before departure for up-to-date medical information. Carrying a first-aid kit and hand sanitizers is also suggested. Note that leaders are prohibited from administering medication.
  • What should I be aware of regarding local dress codes?

When visiting mosques and other religious monuments, modest attire is required, covering shoulders and avoiding short shorts or skirts. Outside major tourist centers, local dress is generally more conservative, so loose-fitting clothes with covered shoulders are recommended out of respect.
  • Are international flights included in the tour price?

No, international flights are not included in the tour price.
  • What kind of optional activities are available?

Optional activities include the Islamic and Coptic Cairo Tour and exploring Memphis and Sakkara in Cairo; Philae Temple visit and Sound and Light Show in Aswan; King Tutankhamen Tomb visit and an 'Explore Luxor in Depth' tour in Luxor; and an Alexandria City Tour. Note that all optional activities and entrance fees must be paid by card due to recent changes by the Ministry of Tourism in Egypt.
  • How does traveling during Ramadan or Aid Al-Adha affect the tour?

During Ramadan, Muslims fast from sunrise to sunset. There may be some limitations to services and disruptions, but tours generally operate effectively with food available to non-Muslims. Increased cultural sensitivity, including modest dress and avoiding eating/drinking/smoking in public, is important. During Aid Al-Adha, most shops and restaurants may be closed, and historical sites might have modified hours. Hotels may also have reduced staff.
