Itinerary

  • Day 1

Journey to Toubkal Refuge via Aremd & the Mizane Valley

Your adventure begins with a scenic drive from Marrakech, heading south towards the majestic Toubkal Massif. As we leave the city behind, we pass through the picturesque Haouz Plain, with the craggy peaks of the Atlas Mountains rising in the distance. We’ll journey through the charming town of Asni, where the road begins to wind its way up towards the foothills of the Massif, offering stunning views of valleys and small Berber villages clinging to the slopes.

Our destination is Imlil, a vibrant village nestled in the heart of the mountains. Here, we’ll meet our mountain guide and begin our trek. We’ll follow the beautiful Mizane Valley, passing through Aremd, the largest village in the area, where traditional terraced farms and the lively bustle of goats and cattle bring the village to life. After exploring Aremd, we’ll continue towards the shrine of Sidi Chamarouch, a revered site set beside a small waterfall, where the scenery is simply breathtaking.

From Sidi Chamarouch, the path begins to climb steadily, crossing the river and winding through rocky cliffs. As we ascend into the snowline, we reach the Toubkal Refuge (3,206m), where we’ll rest for the night, surrounded by the stunning winter landscapes of the High Atlas.

Walking time: Approx. 6 hours Meals included: Lunch & Dinner Accommodation: Toubkal Refuge

A perfect introduction to your Mount Toubkal winter adventure, offering stunning landscapes, cultural encounters, and a sense of accomplishment as you ascend towards the snow-covered peaks.

  • Day 2

Acclimatization & Skills Training at Toubkal Refuge

After a hearty breakfast, today’s focus will be on acclimatization and preparation for the summit. You’ll set off for a scenic walk up the valley, with the option to head towards either the Tizi Ounoums pass or Tizi Ougane, both offering spectacular views of the surrounding peaks and valleys. During this hike, you’ll also receive expert guidance on how to use your equipment, including how to properly wear and walk with crampons and how to handle an ice axe for safety and control on snowy terrain.

The hike will allow your body to adjust to the altitude while providing an opportunity to practice essential mountaineering skills. Afterward, we’ll return to the Toubkal Refuge for a well-earned late lunch. Spend the afternoon resting and relaxing, preparing for the exciting challenge of the summit the following day.

Note: Depending on weather conditions, this day may also be used as a summit day, particularly if forecasts predict challenging conditions for the following day.

Walking time: 4-5 hours Meals included: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner Accommodation: Toubkal Refuge

An essential day for both acclimatization and mastering key mountaineering skills, setting you up for success on the final summit push.

  • Day 3

Summit Day - Conquer Jebel Toubkal

This morning, we embark on the exhilarating ascent of Jebel Toubkal, the highest peak in North Africa at 4,167 meters. Our route will take us up the south cirque, crossing the stream above the Toubkal Refuge before navigating through one of the mountain’s vast scree fields. As we climb, we’ll need to carefully negotiate a seemingly endless stretch of boulders and rocks. While the walking is straightforward, the scree and altitude will present challenges, making the journey both demanding and rewarding.

As we crest the ridgeline, the landscape opens up, and we’ll reach the plateau. From here, it’s a short walk to the summit, where the views are nothing short of spectacular. On clear days, you'll be treated to 360-degree vistas stretching from the Marrakesh Plain to the High Atlas to the north, and all the way south to the Anti-Atlas and the Sahara. Pliny, the Roman scholar, once called the High Atlas Mountains "the most fabulous mountains in all of Africa"—and from this vantage point, it’s easy to see why.

After soaking in the breathtaking views and celebrating your achievement, we’ll begin our descent, retracing our steps back down the mountain. Once we reach Imlil, we’ll transfer back to Marrakech, reflecting on the incredible adventure we’ve just completed.

Walking time: Approx. 7-9 hours (summit and descent) Meals included: Breakfast & Lunch Accommodation: None (final day)

A thrilling and rewarding summit day that will leave you with unforgettable memories of stunning landscapes and the sense of accomplishment from conquering North Africa's highest peak.

Frequently asked questions

  • Do I need previous mountaineering experience?

While prior mountaineering experience is not required, a good level of fitness and a sense of adventure are essential. Our guides will teach you how to use crampons and an ice axe during the trip, so it’s ideal for those looking for a challenge, even if you’re a beginner to winter trekking.
  • What is the best time of year to do the Toubkal climb?

The winter season (December to February) offers a unique and less crowded experience, with stunning snowy landscapes. However, this is a more challenging time to climb, so you should be prepared for cold weather and snowy conditions.
  • What gear do I need to bring?

You’ll need warm clothing, waterproofs, hiking boots, gloves, and a hat. We also recommend packing a headlamp, sunglasses, and personal items such as toiletries. Technical gear like crampons and ice axes will be provided, but if you have your own, you’re welcome to bring them.
  • What is the level of difficulty of the trek?

This trek is considered challenging, especially in winter conditions. While the terrain is relatively straightforward, the cold, snow, and altitude (over 4,000m) will make the climb more demanding. Participants should be in good physical condition and prepared for strenuous hiking.
  • How cold does it get on the mountain?

Temperatures can drop below freezing, especially at night. During the day, temperatures can range from -5°C to 5°C, but it can feel much colder with the wind chill at higher altitudes. Dressing in layers is essential to manage the temperature changes.
  • What kind of accommodation is provided?

Accommodation on the trek is in basic mountain refuges, including the Toubkal Refuge at 3,206 meters. These are shared dormitory-style rooms, but they provide a warm, safe space to rest after your trek. Sleeping bags are typically provided, but you can bring your own for extra comfort.
  • Is food provided during the trek?

Yes, all meals are provided during the trek. Expect hearty, simple meals that fuel you for the day’s activities, including breakfast, lunch, and dinner. Vegetarian and special dietary needs can usually be accommodated with prior notice.
  • How much weight will I need to carry?

You will only need to carry a day pack for your personal items, such as water, snacks, and a camera. Your larger bag will be carried by mules or porters, allowing you to trek more comfortably.
  • What happens if the weather is bad on summit day?

If weather conditions are poor or unsafe, your guide may adjust the itinerary, potentially moving the summit attempt to Day 2, or choosing a lower peak to summit. The safety of the group is always the top priority.
  • How long is the trek, and how fit do I need to be?

The trek lasts 3 days, with each day requiring around 5-7 hours of walking. A moderate level of fitness is required to cope with the altitude, the cold, and the strenuous parts of the hike. Training for endurance and cardiovascular fitness will help you enjoy the trek more.
