Frequently asked questions

  • What is the physical rating of this tour and what level of fitness is required?

This tour is rated Physical Grade 5 and is a challenging backpacking trekking trip. You need to be a fit and confident walker over mountain terrain, able to manage ascents, descents, and cross streams by yourself. It's important to realistically self-assess your fitness for this adventure.
  • Will there be luggage transport or support vehicles during the trek?

No, this is a self-supported backpacking trekking trip. Passengers are required to carry their own packs, and there are no support vehicles, porters, or guides.
  • What kind of accommodation can I expect on this trip?

Accommodation includes a mixture of hotels (4 nights, possibly multi-share) and mountain refuges (5 nights, multi-share). In refuges, rooms are often dormitory-style shared with other hikers (potentially 3-4 group members, or the whole group). Facilities are basic and shared, and may not always be gender-separated. Some camping in roman-style fixed tents may also be included, with shared facilities.
  • Is air conditioning available in the accommodations?

Most accommodation in Europe does not have air conditioning units in rooms. While some properties may provide a standing or desk fan upon request, it is not routinely installed.
  • What if I am a solo traveler? Will I have my own room?

Single travelers joining group trips are paired in twin or multi-share accommodation with someone of the same sex, as the trip is designed for shared accommodation and does not involve a single supplement. If you book the 'My Own Room' option, you will receive your own single room for all night stops where available.
  • What meals are included in the tour price?

The tour includes 9 breakfasts and 5 dinners. For the hiking portions, meal options are limited to those available in the refuges, featuring delicious food made with local ingredients.
  • What is the maximum group size for this tour?

The maximum group size for this tour is 12 travelers, with an average of 10.
  • Who will be leading the trek?

The group will be led by a qualified International Mountain Leader (IML) who serves as the Chief Experience Officer (CEO). The CEO will accompany you on the treks, provide information, offer suggestions, and ensure your safety.
  • Is travel insurance compulsory for this trip?

Yes, travel insurance is compulsory. You must have medical coverage with a minimum of USD 200,000 for repatriation and emergency rescue. It is strongly recommended that the policy also covers personal liability, cancellation, curtailment, and loss of luggage and personal effects.
  • What currency should I use and how much emergency money should I bring?

France and Italy use the Euro (EUR). Switzerland uses the Swiss Franc (CHF), however Euros are very widely accepted. Credit and debit cards are useful for cash advances, but it is advised not to rely on them as your only source of money. You should have access to at least an additional USD $200 (or equivalent) as an emergency fund.
  • What are the guidelines for tipping on this trip?

Tipping is customary in Europe. A general rule is 10% for wait staff, and a smaller amount (EUR1 or EUR2) for other service providers. For local guides, recommendations range from EUR6-8 per day. For your CEO, EUR30-EUR40 per person per week is a guideline, depending on your satisfaction.
  • Are there any health considerations I should know before travelling, especially regarding altitude?

You should consult your doctor for up-to-date medical travel information well before departure. This adventure travels to high altitude, medically defined as anything over 8,000 feet (2,440 meters). Everyone reacts differently, and altitude sickness can occur regardless of fitness or age.
  • What optional activities are available during the trip's free time?

During your free day in Courmayeur, you can opt to ride a cable car to Pointe Helbronner (approx. 52 EUR), visit the Spa Centre of Pré St Didier (approx. 50 EUR), or go for a rafting experience (approx. 30-95 EUR). An optional visit to Aosta (approx. 7 EUR) is also available.
  • What modes of transportation are used during the trek?

Transport on this trip will mainly be on foot. There will also be some short journeys by local bus or cable car to get to the start/finish points of some walks.
  • Can the trekking route or night stops vary?

Yes, night stops and routes may vary depending on weather conditions, daily group progress, and availability. Flexibility is very important. Your CEO will always prioritize your safety and may cancel a day's activity in extreme cases, offering an alternative if possible.
  • What are the main highlights of this trip?

The main highlights include hiking the soul-stirring Mont Blanc massif, witnessing alpine meadows and rocky peaks, conquering windswept cols and steep trails, enjoying delicious mountain meals, and staying in remote mountain refuges.
  • Is laundry available during the trip?

Laundry facilities are offered by some hotels for a charge, or your CEO can advise on the closest laundromat. It is suggested to bring non-polluting/biodegradable soap for handwashing if needed.
  • What rules should I know before joining this trip?

Illegal drugs will not be tolerated. Our philosophy of travel is one of respect towards local people; the exploitation of people in the sex trade is strictly against this philosophy. CEOs have the right to expel any group member found with drugs or utilizing paid sex workers.
