Tokyo, Kyoto, Sendai & Matsushima - 11 Days

On arrival at Tokyo airport, we meet you and transfer you by private vehicle to your hotel – depending on flight schedules, this transfer may be shared with other passengers. The rest of the day is at leisure.

After breakfast, we begin in Asakusa with a visit to Senso-ji, the city’s oldest and most revered temple, approached via Nakamise-dori where traditional stalls offer crafts and local treats. We continue to Asakusa-jinja, a discreet yet historically rich Shinto shrine with a peaceful atmosphere just steps from the temple. Lunch at a local restaurant.

In the afternoon, we visit Meiji-jingu, a serene sanctuary in a vast urban forest dedicated to Emperor Meiji. We then stroll through nearby Harajuku, including lively Takeshita-dori, famed for the colourful creativity of Japanese youth.

In the evening, join an optional welcome dinner accompanied by a Kabuki performance (not included), a traditional Japanese theatrical art known for its elaborate costumes and stylized movements, offering a deep immersion into classical Japanese culture.

After breakfast, take the train to the Shizuoka region, known for its lush landscapes and outstanding agricultural produce. We discover a traditional wasabi farm, learning about the pure spring water and precise conditions needed to cultivate this rare condiment, and conclude with a tasting of freshly grated authentic wasabi.

Lunch features regional specialities such as sakura ebi, Shizuoka oden in its distinctive black broth, eel, gyoza dumplings and huro hanpen, accompanied by fragrant green tea.

After lunch, we head to Nihondaira Park and ride the cable car to the summit for expansive views of Mount Fuji, Enshu Bay and the surrounding hills – weather permitting – followed by a leisurely walk through the park. In the late afternoon, we transfer to Shizuoka Station for the Shinkansen to Kyoto.

After breakfast, we set out to explore Kyoto, Japan’s former imperial capital and cultural heart. We begin at Kinkaku-ji, the Golden Pavilion, its gold leaf façade reflected in a still, carefully landscaped pond and gardens. Lunch at a local restaurant.

In the afternoon, we visit Fushimi Inari Taisha, renowned for thousands of vermilion torii that form striking paths along the mountainside. We continue in Arashiyama to visit Tenryu-ji, then wander through the famed Sagano Bamboo Grove.

In the evening, opt for a traditional kaiseki dinner (not included), a succession of refined dishes showcasing seasonal ingredients, balance of flavors, and Japanese aesthetics

You have a full day at leisure in Kyoto. Alternatively, you may choose from four optional excursions available at a supplement, with day tours to Nara, Osaka, Hiroshima & further guided sightseeing in Kyoto all available.

After breakfast, we travel by Shinkansen to Tokyo. Lunch is at a local restaurant before we explore Akihabara, a hub of Japanese pop culture and electronics where specialist shops for figurines, video games, manga and gadgets line streets bright with neon signs.

We stroll through the lively lanes, browse major anime and manga stores, and step into famous arcades – with opportunities to visit themed cafés that shape the district’s unique atmosphere.

After breakfast, you have a free day in Tokyo. Alternatively, you may select from three optional excursions available at an additional cost, with lunch included. Choose from day trips to Kamakura, Nikko or a visit to a Japanese garden and calligraphy class in Tokyo.

After breakfast, take the Shinkansen from Tokyo to Sendai, the principal city of northern Japan. On arrival, visit Zuihoden Mausoleum, set among cedars and the resting place of the feudal lord Date Masamune – a richly decorated site that offers an engaging introduction to the region’s history and spirituality.

After lunch, head up to the remains of Sendai Castle, once Masamune’s stronghold, to discover the ruins, his statue and panoramic views over the city. You then continue to Osaki Hachimangu Shrine, designated a National Treasure and notable for its ornate architecture. End the day with a stroll through the Ichibancho shopping arcade, a lively district blending shops, local specialities and urban atmosphere.

Take the train to Matsushima Bay, celebrated for its hundreds of pine-covered islets and regarded as one of Japan’s most scenic landscapes. You visit Zuigan-ji, a major Zen temple, followed by Entsu-in, known for its elegant gardens and peaceful ambiance.

Continue to Fukuura Island via the bridge for fine viewpoints across the bay and its rock formations. After lunch, embark on a cruise across Matsushima Bay to admire the islets from the water and fully appreciate the area’s natural beauty. You return by train to Sendai.

Transfer to the station and take the Shinkansen to Tokyo. You then have the rest of the day at leisure.
