Discover an epic 22-day journey from Barcelona to Madrid that weaves together the best of Spain, Portugal and Morocco. You’ll start with relaxed sightseeing in Barcelona before travelling by high-speed train to Madrid and on through historic cities like Salamanca, Porto and Lisbon. Expect wine tasting in Porto, pilgrimage sites in Fátima, Moorish treasures in Córdoba, Seville and Granada, and laid-back time on the Costa del Sol. Cross the Strait of Gibraltar to explore Morocco’s imperial cities, including Fez, Marrakech and Casablanca, before returning to Spain for the grand finale. This wide-ranging tour blends culture, history, coastlines and unforgettable scenery at a comfortable pace.
Itinerary
Day 1
Arrival in Barcelona
On arrival at Barcelona Airport, we transfer to the hotel. The remainder of the day is at leisure, giving you time to relax or begin exploring the city independently.
Tour Style: Please note that this is a bi-lingual, large group coach tour, where a majority of travellers are Spanish, so English will be the second language. For groups of 12 or more the tour is escorted by a bilingual (Spanish & English speaking) tour leader/escort. They will provide explanations about the itinerary, coordinate accommodation services, and ensure the smooth running of the tour, making your trip an enjoyable experience. When the group size is less than 12, this service may be provided by the driver. There will be experienced bi-lingual local guides for city sightseeing.
Day 2
Barcelona City Sightseeing
After breakfast, we explore Barcelona in comfort aboard a double-decker hop-on hop-off sightseeing bus. With a single ticket, you can hop on and off as often as you wish and discover the city at your own pace.
The Orange Route takes us beyond the city’s most famous modernist landmarks, covering western highlights such as the FC Barcelona Stadium and the National Museum of Art of Catalonia. You may choose to visit either museum before rejoining the route, enjoy the atmosphere of El Born, or simply relax and admire the city views.
The Green Route focuses on Barcelona’s artistic heart, showcasing its striking modernist architecture. From Plaça Catalunya to Park Güell, we admire iconic landmarks including the Sagrada Familia, with its richly symbolic façades. Commentary on board reveals the city’s history and hidden stories. Overnight at the hotel.
Day 3
Barcelona to Madrid
Barcelona - Madrid. Breakfast at the hotel. We transfer to Barcelona Sants station and travel by high-speed train to Madrid. On arrival, we transfer to the hotel. The rest of the day is at leisure.
Day 4
Madrid to Porto via Salamanca
Madrid - Porto. After breakfast, we travel to Salamanca. You have free time to explore this UNESCO World Heritage city, renowned for its historic university and remarkable architectural heritage. We then continue across the Portuguese border to Porto.
Day 5
Porto Sightseeing and Wine Tasting
Breakfast at the hotel. We enjoy a panoramic sightseeing tour of Porto, a UNESCO World Heritage city. Highlights include the Cathedral, the Stock Exchange building and Santa Clara Church.
We then experience the city from a different perspective with a cruise along the Douro River, followed by a visit to a traditional Port wine cellar, including a tasting. The remainder of the day is at leisure. Overnight in Porto.
Day 6
Porto to Fátima via Coimbra
Porto - Coimbra - Fatima. After breakfast, we depart for Coimbra, home to one of Europe’s oldest universities and a birthplace of Fado music. Free time to explore.
We continue to Fátima, one of the most important Christian pilgrimage centres in the world. We visit the Sanctuary, including the Basilica and the Cova da Iria, where the Virgin Mary appeared. We recommend visiting the Chapel of the Apparitions, where the three shepherd children are buried. In the evening, you may wish to attend the candlelight procession.
Day 7
Fátima to Lisbon
Fatima - Batalha - Nazare - Alcobaca - Lisbon. Breakfast at the hotel. We visit the Batalha Monastery, a masterpiece of Gothic and Manueline architecture and a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
We continue to Nazaré, a picturesque fishing town, with free time to enjoy its coastal charm. We then visit Alcobaça, also a World Heritage Site, famous for its Gothic church and historic Cistercian monastery dating back to the 12th century.
Day 8
Lisbon City Tour
After breakfast, we enjoy a guided city tour of Lisbon, once known as Olissipo. We see the main squares and avenues, Belém Tower, the exterior of Jerónimos Monastery and the Monument to the Discoveries.
The afternoon is at leisure. You may explore districts such as Alfama or join the optional excursion to Sintra and Cascais, both UNESCO World Heritage Sites.
Day 9
Lisbon to Córdoba via Mérida
Lisbon - Merida - Cordoba. Breakfast at the hotel. We travel to Mérida, capital of Extremadura and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Free time to discover its impressive Roman remains, including the theatre, amphitheatre and Roman bridge.
We then continue to Córdoba, once the capital of the Caliphate.
Day 10
Córdoba and Seville
Cordoba - Seville. After breakfast, we enjoy a guided visit to the Mosque-Cathedral, followed by a walk through the narrow streets of the Jewish Quarter.
In the afternoon, we travel to Seville, arriving after a short journey.
Day 11
Seville City Tour
Breakfast at the hotel. This morning we enjoy a panoramic and monumental city tour, including entrance to Seville Cathedral, the second largest Catholic cathedral in the world.
We also visit the Barrio de Santa Cruz, María Luisa Park and Plaza de España. The afternoon is at leisure to enjoy the atmosphere and local cuisine of this vibrant Andalusian city.
Day 12
Seville to Costa del Sol via Ronda
Seville - Costa del Sol. After breakfast, we drive south through traditional villages to Ronda. Free time to admire its dramatic setting above the gorge and views of the surrounding mountains.
In the afternoon, we continue to the Costa del Sol, one of Spain’s most popular tourist regions. Overnight stay.
Day 13
Costa del Sol at Leisure
Breakfast at the hotel. The day is at leisure to relax on the beaches or explore the surrounding area. Optional excursions are available.
Day 14
Costa del Sol to Fez
Costa del Sol - Tarifa/Algeciras - Tangier - Fes. We depart along the Costa del Sol to Tarifa or Algeciras, where we board the ferry across the Strait of Gibraltar to Morocco. After arrival and customs formalities, we continue by coach to Fez.
Day 15
Fez City Tour
Breakfast at the hotel. We explore Fez, the oldest of Morocco’s Imperial Cities. Highlights include the Royal Palace gates, the Jewish Quarter, Bab Bou Jeloud and a guided walk through the UNESCO-listed Medina.
The afternoon is at leisure.
Day 16
Fez to Marrakech via Rabat and Casablanca
Fes - Rabat - Casablanca - Marrakech. After breakfast, we depart for Rabat, the capital of Morocco. We visit the exterior of the Royal Palace, the Mausoleum of Mohamed V and the Hassan Tower.
We continue to Casablanca to see United Nations Square, the Corniche Boulevard and the exterior of the Hassan II Mosque. Free lunch en route before continuing to Marrakech. Optional Fantasia dinner at Chez Ali.
Day 17
Marrakech City Tour and Casablanca
Marrakech - Casablanca. Breakfast at the hotel. This morning we tour Marrakech, the ‘Pearl of the South’. We visit the Menara Gardens, the exterior of the Koutoubia Minaret and the Bahia Palace.
We continue to Jemaa el-Fna Square and explore the souks and medina, with artisan guilds showcasing traditional crafts. Lunch at the hotel before travelling to Casablanca.
Day 18
Morocco to Costa del Sol
Casablanca - Fes - Tangier - Tarifa/Algeciras - Costa del Sol. After breakfast, we travel to Tangier and board the ferry back to Spain across the Strait of Gibraltar. We continue to the Costa del Sol for overnight accommodation.
Day 19
Costa del Sol at Leisure
Breakfast at the hotel. A full day at leisure to enjoy the beaches or join optional excursions.
Day 20
Costa del Sol to Granada
Costa del Sol - Granada. After breakfast, we travel to Granada, the last stronghold of Moorish Spain until 1492. We visit the Alhambra and Generalife Gardens, a UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of Europe’s most celebrated monuments.
Evening at leisure, with the option to attend a Flamenco Zambra show. Please note:If entrance tickets to the Alhambra and Generalife are not available on certain dates, alternative compensation will be offered at the operator’s discretion.
Day 21
Granada to Madrid
Granada - Madrid. Breakfast at the hotel. We travel north to Madrid.
Day 22
Departure from Madrid
Breakfast at the hotel. Transfer to the airport for departure.
