Summary

Explore Iceland in depth on this six-day journey starting and ending in Reykjavik, combining famous highlights with remote escapes. You’ll take in the Golden Circle and South Coast, with stops at powerful waterfalls, Reynisfjara’s black sands, Jokulsarlon glacier lagoon and the dramatic Katla ice cave. The adventure then shifts to the lesser-visited Westfjords, where quiet fjords, red-sand beaches and towering cliffs like Latrabjarg await. Expect scenic drives, wildlife, local museums and charming towns such as Isafjordur, all paired with expert guidance and comfortable stays along the way.

Itinerary

  • Day 1

Travel to South Iceland via the Golden Circle

Reykjavik - The Golden Circle (Thingvellir National Park; Geysir Geothermal Area; Gullfoss Waterfall) - Seljalandsfoss Waterfall - Kirkjubaejarklauster.

Your adventure begins with pickup in Reykjavik and travel along the Golden Circle. Our first stop is Thingvellir National Park, where we walk through the rift valley between the North American and Eurasian tectonic plates and see the site of Iceland’s first parliament.

We then visit the Geysir geothermal area, home to Strokkur, which erupts every few minutes. From here, we continue to Gullfoss waterfall, where a powerful two-tiered cascade drops into a rugged canyon.

In the afternoon, we head south. If conditions are clear, we may see Hekla volcano in the distance. We finish the day at Seljalandsfoss, where you may walk behind the waterfall if conditions allow.

Please note: We strongly recommend arriving in Reykjavik the day before your tour starts. Please also note that this tour includes a moderate amount of hiking to see attractions such as waterfalls. You should be comfortable hiking a distance of around 5km. Get in touch with our team should you have any concerns.

  • Day 2

Explore the Vatnajokull National Park & Katla Ice Cave

Kirkjubaejarklauster - Vatnajokull National Park (Jokulsarlon Glacier Lagoon; Skaftafell Nature Reserve) - Katla Ice Cave - Kirkjubaejarklauster.

After breakfast, we travel east to Jokulsarlon Glacier Lagoon, where icebergs drift across the water before washing ashore at nearby Diamond Beach.

We continue into Skaftafell Nature Reserve. In summer, we follow an easy trail to Svartifoss, known for its basalt column backdrop.

Later, we visit the Katla ice cave. With our guide, we walk through the cave’s ash-streaked ice formations, spending around two hours exploring and taking photos.

  • Day 3

Experience the South Coast & Return to Reykjavik

Kirkjubaejarklauster - Eldhraun Lava Field - Reynisfjara Beach - Skogafoss Waterfall - Reykjavik.

We begin with a possible detour to Fjadrargljufur canyon, depending on weather conditions. We then pass through Eldhraun, one of the world’s largest lava fields.

At Reynisfjara beach, we experience the power of the Atlantic Ocean and see basalt columns and the Reynisdrangar sea stacks. Conditions can be unpredictable here, so we follow safety guidance closely.

We continue to Skogafoss, where a staircase leads to views from above the waterfall. On clear days, Eyjafjallajokull volcano may be visible. We return to Reykjavik for an overnight stay.

  • Day 4

    Journey Into the Westfjords

Reykjavik - Budardalur - Vatnsfjordur Nature Reserve - Latrabjarg Cliff - Breidavik Beach - Flokalundur.

We depart Reykjavik and head north along the Ring Road. Our first stop is Eiriksstadir, a reconstructed Viking longhouse offering insight into early Icelandic life.

We continue into the Westfjords through Vatnsfjordur Nature Reserve, stopping at the Gardar shipwreck along the way.

At Latrabjarg cliffs, we visit one of Europe’s largest seabird colonies, where puffins often nest in summer. The day ends at Breidavik beach.

  • Day 5

Discover More of the Westfjords & Continue to Isafjordur

Flokalundur - Raudisandur - Dynjandi Waterfall - Onundarfjordur Pier - Bolafjall Viewing Platform - Isafjordur.

We begin with a visit to Raudisandur, a rare red-sand beach coloured by crushed shells.

Our journey continues through Fossfjordur valley to Dynjandi waterfall, a series of cascading tiers that widen as they descend.

We stop at Onundarfjordur pier before heading up to the Bolafjall viewing platform, offering wide views over the surrounding fjords. The day ends in Isafjordur, the largest town in the region, where we stay overnight.

  • Day 6

Journey from Westfjords Back to Reykjavik

Isafjordur - Bolungarvik - Westfjords Seven Fjords Route - Sudavik - Gervidalsa Valley - Grabrok Crater - Reykjavik.

We visit Osvor Maritime Museum, a restored fishing station that reflects Iceland’s coastal heritage, followed by a stop at Osholar lighthouse. Both located in Bolungarvik within Westfjords.

Travelling along the Seven Fjords Route, we continue to Sudavik for a visit to the Arctic Fox Center to learn about Iceland’s only native land mammal. We also stop at a local seal colony along the coast.

Before leaving the Westfjords, we pause at Gervidalsa valley. On the return journey to Reykjavik, we visit Grabrok crater and travel through Hvalfjordur fjord.

We arrive back in Reykjavik in the late afternoon or early evening, depending on conditions.
