The giant jungle – which spans 8 countries and is home to more than 2 million Indigenous people – is the perfect place to explore, with a lodge to return home to every day. Walk through the rainforest, cruise along waterways, spot wildlife you’ve never seen before and learn about the healing properties of native plants. This short break is a great way to get to know the friendly people and the amazing creatures that call the Amazon home.
Itinerary
Day 1
Puerto Maldonado/Amazon Lodge
Hola! Welcome to Peru. A lodge representative will welcome you at the airport, so please make sure you arrive in Puerto Maldonado by 1 pm. Then, head to the Amazon lodge office, where you’ll safely store most of your luggage for the duration of your Short Break. Pack everything you need for your two days in the jungle in a small bag provided and hit the road again. To reach your jungle lodge in the Madre de Dios area, journey in a motorised canoe upriver. When you arrive, unwind in your new jungle surroundings.
Day 2
Amazon Lodge
Start your day by exploring the Amazon by boat and foot. The excursions offer immersive ways to explore the Amazon rainforest. The Inkaterra Canopy Walkway lets visitors observe the forest from above via suspension bridges and treetop platforms, originally built for scientific research. The River Island excursion includes a short boat ride to an uninhabited island with rich birdlife, highlighting diverse rainforest vegetation. As an alternative, Lake Sandoval features a jungle hike and canoe ride on a scenic oxbow lake within a protected reserve, known for abundant wildlife including birds, reptiles, monkeys, and endangered giant river otters.
Day 3
Amazon Lodge
Today’s excursions will showcase the Amazon’s biodiversity and cultural heritage. Explore Wetlands via a short walkway through aguajales swampland, learning about adapted vegetation and diverse wildlife. Visit the Bio-Orchard to discover tropical plants and their medicinal uses, supported by sustainable agroforestry initiatives. Wander the Palmetum, a conservation area highlighting Amazonian palms and their ecological and cultural significance. Finally, experience the Rainforest by Night, a guided walk revealing nocturnal wildlife and the unique sounds of the jungle after dark.
Day 4
Puerto Maldonado
Depart the lodge this morning after an early breakfast. You’ll be taken from the port to the airport, at which point your trip comes to an end. Departure flights for today should be booked for after 11.45 am.

Entering the Amazon jungle on the edge of Madre de Dios river was like another world. Highly recommend this for anyone keen to learn more about the Amazon basin. I thought I was Indiana Jones!!
Sue Apr, 2026 VerifiedOur Amazon short stay was an outstanding experience. We were fortunate to be allocated the Inkaterra Reserve Amazon as our base - a top shelf experience in every sense. Great accommodation, attentive staff and excellent activities. Above all our guide Gus deserves a shout out. Very authentic and knowledgable man with a passion for the Peruvian Amazon.
