Summary

Delve into a 12-day journey from Porto through Portugal and northern Spain, filled with heritage, flavour, and scenic charm. Admire Porto’s riverside beauty and sample its famed wine before heading south to Coimbra, Fátima, and Lisbon, where elegant squares and Belem’s monuments reflect Portugal’s golden age. Continue into Spain to visit Roman Mérida, vibrant Madrid, and stylish San Sebastián, then venture north to Santillana, Covadonga, and Santiago de Compostela, crowned by its grand cathedral. Conclude in Vigo before returning to Porto.

Itinerary

  • Day 1

    Arrival in Porto

    Once you have arrived in Porto, you will be met and transferred to the hotel for check-in. You will then have the rest of the day at leisure to explore Porto, grab a meal, or relax.

    Please note: This tour is bilingual and will be conducted in Spanish as well as in English.

  • Day 2

    Discovering Porto’s Heritage

    Today, make your way to the meeting point at 7:30 am, where we begin our exploration of Porto, a city recognised as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

    We enjoy a panoramic tour that takes us past some of the city’s most remarkable landmarks, including the Cathedral, the impressive former Stock Exchange building, and the beautifully adorned Church of St Clara.

    We end the day with a visit to a traditional wine cellar, where we have the opportunity to sample Porto’s world-famous Port wine.

  • Day 3

    Coimbra, Fátima and Lisbon

    Porto - Coimbra - Fatima - Lisbon. We begin our journey to Coimbra, a historic city renowned for its prestigious university, one of the oldest in Europe, and celebrated as the birthplace of fado music. On arrival, you have some free time to explore the charming streets, visit the university grounds, or simply enjoy the city’s lively atmosphere.

    We then continue to Fatima, one of the world’s most significant pilgrimage sites. Here, you have time to visit the Basilica and the Sanctuary, places of deep spiritual importance and reflection.

  • Day 4

    Exploring Lisbon

    This morning, we enjoy a panoramic tour of Lisbon, the beautiful city that sits at the mouth of the Tagus River. We take in the views from Park Viewpoint before passing through Edward VII Square, Rossio Square, and the elegant Liberdade Avenue. We also explore the Madragoa district, known as the birthplace of fado, Portugal’s most traditional and soulful music.

    We then continue to the Belem district to admire some of Lisbon’s most iconic landmarks, including the Belem Tower, the Monument to the Discoveries, and the magnificent Jerónimos Monastery.

    The afternoon is at your leisure to further explore the city at your own pace. You may wish to join an optional excursion to Sintra, Cascais, and Estoril, three coastal gems known for their charm and beauty.

  • Day 5

    Merida & Madrid

    Lisbon (Portugal) - Merida (Spain) - Madrid. We set out towards the Spanish border and make our way to Merida, a city steeped in ancient Roman history. On arrival, you have free time to explore its remarkable archaeological complex, home to the impressive Roman Theatre and Amphitheatre, both recognised as UNESCO World Heritage Sites.

    You can enjoy lunch at your leisure before we continue our journey back to Madrid. Upon arrival, we settle into our accommodations for the evening.

  • Day 6

    Zaragoza & Pamplona

    Madrid - Zaragoza - Pamplona. This morning, we depart for Zaragoza, where we make a brief stop and enjoy some free time to visit the Basilica de Nuestra Señora del Pilar, dedicated to the Patroness of the Hispanic world and a major site of devotion in Spain.

    We then continue our journey to Pamplona, a city celebrated for the vibrant San Fermín festivities and known for its charming old quarter filled with lively cafés and historic streets.

  • Day 7

    San Sebastián, Bilbao & Santander

    Pamplona - San Sebastian - Bilbao - Santander. Today we travel towards San Sebastián, one of the most elegant cities in northern Spain. You have free time to stroll along the beautiful La Concha Bay or explore the characterful old town with its lively atmosphere and inviting cafés.

    We then continue to Bilbao, the capital of the province of Biscay, where we make a brief stop to admire the striking architecture of the Guggenheim Museum, an icon of modern design. Our journey then continues to Santander, a refined coastal city where we enjoy dinner and settle into our accommodations for the night.

  • Day 8

    Santillana del Mar, Covadonga & Oviedo

    Santander - Santillana del Mar - Covadonga - Oviedo. After breakfast, we depart for Santillana del Mar, a beautifully preserved medieval town recognised as a National Monument for its exceptional heritage and charm. We then continue through stunning countryside landscapes to reach Covadonga, where you have free time to visit the Sanctuary, a revered pilgrimage site set amidst the dramatic scenery of the Picos de Europa.

    Later, we travel on to Oviedo, the capital of Asturias, where we enjoy dinner and settle into our accommodations for the evening.

  • Day 9

    La Coruña & Santiago de Compostela

    Oviedo - La Coruna - Santiago de Compostela. Today, we make our way towards Galicia and arrive in the stately city of La Coruna. We take a brief panoramic tour to appreciate its elegant architecture and coastal charm.

    We then continue to Santiago de Compostela, one of Spain’s most cherished cities and the final destination of the famous Camino de Santiago pilgrimage route. Here, we enjoy dinner and settle into our accommodations for the night.

  • Day 10

    Exploring Santiago de Compostela

    We begin the day with a guided city tour of Santiago de Compostela, one of the world’s most important pilgrimage centres. Our visit includes the iconic Plaza del Obradoiro and the magnificent Cathedral, the spiritual and artistic heart of the city.

    The afternoon is at your leisure to explore more of Santiago at your own pace, or you may wish to join one of our optional excursions. This evening, we enjoy dinner and spend the night in our accommodations.

  • Day 11

    Rias Bajas & Vigo

    Santiago de Compostela - Rías Bajas - Vigo. This morning, we set off towards the scenic Rías Bajas, often referred to as the Spanish Fjords, travelling through a region of striking natural beauty. Along the way, we make a brief stop at La Toja Island, known for its spa traditions and picturesque charm.

    We continue to O Grove, where you may choose to join an optional catamaran cruise to see the local oyster and mussel farms, complete with a tasting of freshly cooked mussels and a glass of Ribeiro wine.

    Our journey then continues to Vigo, a lively coastal city where you have free time to explore at your own pace. You may also wish to join an optional excursion to Santa Tecla before settling into our accommodations for the evening.

  • Day 12

    Viana do Castelo, Braga & Back to Porto

    Vigo (Spain) - Viana do Castelo (Portugal) - Braga - Porto. After our final breakfast, we cross the Portuguese border and arrive in Viana do Castelo, a charming city set between the mouth of the River Miño and Porto. You have free time to wander through the old town, with its cobbled streets, elegant squares and beautifully adorned buildings.

    We then continue to Braga, known as the city of archbishops and the third largest in Portugal. Here, you have time to explore at your leisure before we make our way to Porto, where our journey comes to an end.
