  Not at all locations. For example, the Masai Mara safari camp does not have electricity for lights or charging batteries. Additionally, occasional power outages can be common in many areas of these developing regions.

  The tour includes 11 breakfasts, 7 lunches, and 6 dinners.

  The 7-seat 4x4 safari vans are designed for wildlife viewing with sliding windows and large pop-up roofs. Road conditions can vary significantly, but vehicles are regularly serviced, and drivers are trained mechanics in case of occasional breakdowns.

• What currencies are used in Rwanda, Uganda, and Kenya, and how can I obtain them?

  The local currencies are Rwanda Franc in Rwanda, Ugandan Shilling in Uganda, and Kenyan Shilling (KES/KSH) in Kenya. Local currency can be obtained by exchanging foreign currency or using ATMs where available. Your CEO will provide guidance on exchange locations.

• What foreign currencies are best for exchange, and are there any restrictions?

  US dollars are generally the easiest foreign currency to exchange, though British Pounds and Euros may also be accepted. Please note that US dollar notes printed before 2006 are not accepted in Africa due to forgery concerns. Larger US dollar notes ($50, $100) often yield better exchange rates.

• Can I use credit or debit cards throughout the trip?

  Visa/Plus system debit cards are more widely accepted than Mastercard/Cirrus cards, so carrying both is recommended. Credit cards can be used in major cities and towns only and should not be relied upon as a primary payment method, as a 5-10% fee usually applies. ATMs may also run out of cash or be out of order, so a combination of foreign currency and debit/credit cards for cash advances is best.

• Do I need cash for visas?

  Yes, if you plan to purchase visas at borders, you must bring US dollar cash, as local or other currencies are typically not accepted for visa payments.

• Are traveler's cheques accepted?

  No, traveler's cheques are difficult, if not impossible, to exchange in many places in Africa, so please do not bring them.

• What is the recommended emergency fund?

  It is recommended to have access to at least an additional USD $200 (or equivalent) as an emergency fund for unforeseen circumstances outside of the tour's control.

• Is there a departure tax?

  A departure tax of USD $40 is usually included in most international air tickets.

• Are there any specific health considerations for this trip?

  It is highly recommended to consult your family physician or a travel clinic at least one month before departure for up-to-date health information and recommended inoculations. A valid Yellow Fever Certificate is compulsory for entry into Kenya and Uganda, regardless of your country of origin. Malaria is present in some regions, so discuss preventative medication (prophylaxis) and consistent use of insect repellent with your doctor.

  In Nairobi, always leave your passport and valuables in your hotel's safe (carrying photocopies is advisable). Avoid leaving bags unattended or openly displaying valuable items.   We strongly recommend using a neck wallet or money belt for valuable documents and cash, and leaving valuable jewelry at home. Many hotels offer safety deposit boxes. A lock for your luggage is also recommended. Your CEO can amend the itinerary for safety concerns. During free time, use good judgment for optional activities and consider traveling in small groups or taking taxis at night. Avoid protest areas and only participate in water-based activities with a guide.

This tour includes visits to G Adventures for Good projects supported by Planeterra, such as the Amani ya Juu in Nairobi and the Nyamirambo Women's Centre in Kigali, which empower local women and communities.

• What are the tipping guidelines for this trip?

  Tipping is an expected, though not compulsory, expression of appreciation. Suggested daily guidelines per person are: CEO $5 USD, Driver $5 USD, Supply crew $2-5 USD. Local guides can be tipped $1 USD per couple of hours. For certified safari guide/drivers and trekking guides in Uganda and Rwanda, a guideline of $10-15 USD for a full day is suggested. For restaurant/café servers, 10% of the bill is customary, especially for larger groups.

  Yes, hand washing facilities are available at most campsites, so bringing non-polluting/biodegradable soap and a small drying line is recommended. Some hotels and lodges also offer laundry services for an additional charge.

  No, our group trips are designed for shared accommodation without a single supplement. Solo travelers are paired with someone of the same sex. If you prefer a private room, the 'My Own Room/Tent' option is available for an additional cost, which guarantees a single room/tent for all night stops.

• Is travel insurance compulsory for this trip?

  Yes, travel insurance is compulsory for all participants. You will need to provide evidence of coverage for medical expenses, including emergency evacuation and repatriation (minimum USD $200,000), to your leader. Coverage for personal liability, cancellation, curtailment, and loss of luggage is also strongly recommended.
