Summary
Explore the American West on this eight-day round trip from Los Angeles, packed with desert landscapes, national parks and classic coastal scenery. After arriving in LA, travel through the Mojave Desert to glittering Las Vegas before continuing into the dramatic wilderness of Death Valley. You’ll then head into the Sierra Nevada Mountains and discover Yosemite National Park’s granite cliffs, waterfalls and famous valley views. Enjoy time in San Francisco, with optional sightseeing and Napa Valley wine tasting, before following the coast via Monterey, Carmel and Santa Barbara. The tour ends back in Los Angeles after a taste of Hollywood and Santa Monica.
Itinerary
Day 1
Arrive Los Angeles
Arrive in Los Angeles and transfer by shuttle bus to your hotel. The evening is at leisure. Please note: This tour may have travellers joining or departing at various points along the route, meaning group composition can change during the tour. Please also be aware that depending on group composition, guiding may be in additional languages as well as English.
Day 2
Los Angeles to Las Vegas via Mojave Desert
Los Angeles - Mojave - Las Vegas. Meet your Tour Director this morning and depart by motorcoach for Las Vegas, travelling through the Mojave Desert. Known for its bright lights, casinos and world-class entertainment, Las Vegas offers non-stop energy from the moment you arrive.
Please meet in the lobby of the designated hotel at 07:30 for an 08:00 departure.
Day 3
Las Vegas to Mammoth Lakes via Death Valley
Las Vegas - Death Valley - Mammoth Lakes. After the glamour of Las Vegas, we enter the dramatic and remote landscapes of Death Valley, one of the hottest and driest places in North America. Stops include Zabriskie Point and Furnace Creek Visitor Centre before we continue across the valley and ascend into the Sierra Nevada Mountains.
We arrive in Mammoth Lakes, an alpine resort town once linked to gold mining and now known for its mountain scenery and excellent ski terrain.
Please note: if Tioga Pass is closed, the route will operate via Fresno.
Day 4
Mammoth Lakes/Fresno to Modesto via Yosemite National Park
Mammoth Lakes - Fresno - Yosemite - Modesto. Today we travel via Tioga Pass, conditions permitting, into Yosemite National Park. Here, we explore the valley floor and see some of the park’s most famous sights, including El Capitan, Half Dome, Bridalveil Fall and Yosemite Falls. These granite cliffs and waterfalls were shaped by glaciers over thousands of years.
Day 5
Modesto to San Francisco
Modesto - San Francisco. Depart early for San Francisco, one of America’s best-loved cities. On arrival, we enjoy a comprehensive sightseeing tour before continuing to the hotel.
This evening, you may choose to join an optional San Francisco by Night tour, including the chance to ride a cable car and enjoy views of the “City by the Bay”.
Day 6
San Francisco at Leisure
Enjoy a day at leisure in San Francisco. Your ATI Tour Director will be available to help with suggestions. You might ride a cable car to Fisherman’s Wharf, sample local seafood, sourdough bread or Ghirardelli chocolate, or see the sea lions by the marina.
You can also look across the bay to Alcatraz Island, once home to notorious inmates including Al Capone and “Machine Gun” Kelly, or visit Union Square for shopping. Alternatively, join an optional wine tasting tour to Napa Valley, renowned for its wineries and scenic vineyards.
Day 7
San Francisco to Central Coast via Monterey and Carmel
San Francisco - Santa Barbara. Depart San Francisco and travel to the Monterey Peninsula, known for its coastal scenery, beaches and impressive homes. In Monterey, we visit Fisherman’s Wharf and Cannery Row, once the centre of the sardine-packing industry and later made famous by writer John Steinbeck.
We continue to Carmel-by-the-Sea, known for its cottages, art galleries and independent shops, before travelling through Paso Robles, a respected wine-growing region. Overnight in a Central California Coast town.
Day 8
Departure
Santa Barbara - Santa Monica - Los Angeles. Journey south through the Santa Ynez Valley to Santa Barbara, where palm-lined walkways meet broad sandy beaches. On arrival in Los Angeles, we take an orientation tour including Hollywood, parts of Beverly Hills and Century City. We continue to Santa Monica, home to the finish line of historic Route 66, where you may enjoy an optional lunch on the pier. The tour ends on arrival at the LAX hotel.
