Summary
Explore the American West on this 15-day journey starting and ending in Los Angeles. You’ll travel from California’s sunny coast to the deserts of Arizona and the dramatic landscapes of Utah, taking in highlights like San Diego, Palm Springs and the Grand Canyon. Expect iconic scenery in Monument Valley, Bryce Canyon and Zion, plus a taste of glitz in Las Vegas. Continue through Death Valley and Yosemite before soaking up the charm of San Francisco and the Pacific Coast, including Monterey and Santa Barbara. This well-paced tour blends natural wonders, vibrant cities and classic road trip moments.
Itinerary
Day 1
Arrival in Los Angeles
Arrive at Los Angeles International Airport and make your own way to the hotel, where you will meet your Tour Director. Please note: This tour may have travellers joining or departing at various points along the route, meaning group composition can change during the tour. Please also be aware that depending on group composition, guiding may be in additional languages as well as English.
Day 2
San Diego Excursion
Los Angeles - The O.C - San Diego - Los Angeles. We travel south via San Juan Capistrano and San Clemente to San Diego, California’s second-largest city, known for its mild climate. Following a city tour, we visit Seaport Village, a relaxed waterfront marketplace with shops and cafés. You may wish to browse or shop before we return to Los Angeles in the evening.
Day 3
Palm Springs to Phoenix/Scottsdale
Los Angeles - Palm Springs - Phoenix. Our journey continues through Palm Springs, long favoured by Hollywood’s elite, set against the San Jacinto Mountains. We pass striking wind turbine fields before continuing through Indio in the Coachella Valley, known for its agricultural heritage and annual date festival.
Day 4
Sedona and Grand Canyon
Phoenix - Sedona - Grand Canyon. We travel through the Sonoran Desert, one of the most biologically diverse desert ecosystems in the Americas. In Sedona, distinctive red-rock formations such as Cathedral Rock create a dramatic landscape. We then drive through Oak Creek Canyon before reaching the Grand Canyon. At the rim, we take in views of this vast natural wonder, carved over millions of years by the Colorado River.
Day 5
Monument Valley to Page/Lake Powell
Grand Canyon - Monument Valley - Lake Powell. Today we enter Navajo Nation, passing Cameron Trading Post before continuing through the Painted Desert to Monument Valley, famed for its iconic sandstone buttes. By afternoon, we arrive in Page, set above the Colorado River. The evening is at leisure.
Day 6
Bryce Canyon via Lake Powell
Lake Powell - Kanab - Bryce Canyon National Park. We visit Glen Canyon Dam, one of the highest concrete-arch dams in the United States, with views over Lake Powell’s blue waters and red-rock surroundings. Entering Utah, we pass through Kanab before exploring Bryce Canyon, known for its unique sandstone spires - or hoodoos. This evening, weather permitting, you may wish to enjoy the clear night sky.
Day 7
Zion National Park to Las Vegas
Bryce Canyon National Park - Zion - Las Vegas. We continue to Zion National Park, where towering rock formations have been shaped by wind, water and time. Later, we arrive in Las Vegas. A stop is made at the famous Welcome sign for photos before continuing to the hotel.
Day 8
Las Vegas at Leisure
Today is free for you to explore. You might stroll along the Strip, visit shops, see a show or simply take in the city’s vibrant atmosphere.
Day 9
Death Valley to Mammoth Lakes
Las Vegas - Death Valley National Park - Mammoth Lakes. Leaving Las Vegas, we enter Death Valley, one of the hottest and driest places in North America. We stop at Zabriskie Point and Furnace Creek before crossing the valley and ascending into the Sierra Nevada mountains to Mammoth Lakes, a former gold mining town now known for its alpine scenery.
If Tioga Pass is closed, overnight will be in Fresno.
Day 10
Yosemite National Park
Mammoth Lakes - Yosemite National Park - Modesto. We travel into Yosemite National Park via Tioga Pass (seasonal), exploring its valley floor and famous landmarks including El Capitan, Half Dome, Bridalveil Fall and Yosemite Falls. Overnight is in Modesto.
Day 11
San Francisco Arrival
Modesto - San Francisco. We depart early for San Francisco. On arrival, we enjoy a sightseeing tour of this much-loved city before checking in. This evening, you may choose to join an optional City by Night tour.
Day 12
San Francisco at Leisure
A full day at leisure. You might ride a cable car to Fisherman’s Wharf and sample local specialities such as seafood, sourdough bread or chocolate. Alternatively, visit Union Square for shopping or view Alcatraz Island across the bay. An optional excursion to Napa Valley offers the chance to explore one of the world’s leading wine regions.
Day 13
Monterey and Carmel Coast
San Francisco - Monterey - Santa Barbara. We head to the Monterey Peninsula, visiting Fisherman’s Wharf and historic Cannery Row. In Carmel-by-the-Sea, we explore its charming streets, galleries and boutiques. Later, we continue through Paso Robles wine country to our overnight stop along the Central Coast.
Day 14
Santa Barbara to Los Angeles
Santa Barbara - Santa Monica - Los Angeles. We travel through the Santa Ynez Valley to Santa Barbara, known for its palm-lined beaches and Mediterranean-style architecture. Back in Los Angeles, we take an orientation tour including Hollywood and Beverly Hills, before arriving in Santa Monica at the end of historic Route 66. You may wish to enjoy an optional lunch on the pier before heading to the hotel.
Day 15
Departure from Los Angeles
Your tour concludes after check-out from the hotel.
