Summary
Set out on a 20-day adventure from Los Angeles back to Los Angeles, packed with iconic sights and contrasting landscapes. You’ll travel along the California coast to San Diego, then head inland through desert scenery to Phoenix and Sedona before reaching the awe-inspiring Grand Canyon. Expect classic American West highlights including Monument Valley, Bryce and Zion, plus time in lively Las Vegas. Cross Death Valley and explore Yosemite’s dramatic peaks before discovering San Francisco and the scenic Central Coast. The journey ends on a high with five relaxing days in Hawaii, offering sun, sea and laid-back island charm.
Itinerary
Day 1
Welcome to Los Angeles
Arrive at Los Angeles International Airport and make your own way to the hotel, where we meet the Tour Director. Please note: This tour may have travellers joining or departing at various points along the route, meaning group composition can change during the tour. Please also be aware that depending on group composition, guiding may be in additional languages as well as English.
Day 2
Coastal California to San Diego
Los Angeles - The O.C - San Diego - Los Angeles. We travel south through San Juan Capistrano and San Clemente to San Diego, California’s second-largest city, known for its mild climate year-round. After a city tour, we visit Seaport Village, a relaxed waterfront marketplace. There is time to browse the shops before returning to Los Angeles in the evening.
Day 3
Desert Landscapes to Arizona
Los Angeles - Palm Springs - Phoenix. We head towards Palm Springs, long favoured by Hollywood’s elite, set against the dramatic San Jacinto Mountains.The route is marked by vast wind farms before continuing through Indio in the Coachella Valley, home to the International Date Festival.
Day 4
Red Rocks and the Grand Canyon
Phoenix - Sedona - Grand Canyon. We travel through the Sonoran Desert, one of the most biologically diverse desert regions in the Americas, before reaching Sedona, surrounded by striking red-rock formations. The journey continues through Oak Creek Canyon to Grand Canyon National Park. At the rim, we take in the immense scale of this natural wonder, carved over millions of years by the Colorado River.
Day 5
Navajo Nation and Monument Valley
Grand Canyon - Monument Valley - Lake Powell. Today we enter the Navajo Nation, passing Cameron Trading Post before continuing through the Painted Desert to Monument Valley, famed for its iconic sandstone buttes. By afternoon, we arrive in Page, set above the Colorado River. The evening is free.
Day 6
Lake Powell to Bryce Canyon
Lake Powell - Kanab - Bryce Canyon National Park. We visit Glen Canyon Dam, one of the highest concrete-arch dams in the United States, with views over Lake Powell’s vivid blue waters. Crossing into Utah, we pass through Kanab before arriving at Bryce Canyon. Here, we explore a landscape of distinctive sandstone spires known as hoodoos. This evening, you may wish to enjoy the clear night sky.
Day 7
National Parks to Las Vegas
Bryce Canyon National Park - Zion - Las Vegas. We continue to Zion National Park to see its towering rock formations shaped by erosion and the Virgin River. Later, we arrive in Las Vegas, known for its entertainment, shopping and nightlife. We stop at the famous Welcome sign for a photo opportunity.
Day 8
Las Vegas at Leisure
A full day at leisure. You can explore the city’s attractions, from casinos and shows to the lively Las Vegas Strip.
Day 9
Las Vegas to the Sierra Nevada
Las Vegas - Death Valley - Mammoth Lakes. Leaving Las Vegas, we enter Death Valley, one of the hottest and driest places on earth.We stop at Zabriskie Point and Furnace Creek before crossing the valley and ascending into the Sierra Nevada to Mammoth Lakes, a historic mining town now known for its alpine scenery. If Tioga Pass is closed, the route will be via Fresno.
Day 10
Yosemite National Park
Mammoth Lakes - Fresno - Yosemite - Modesto. We travel into Yosemite National Park, renowned for its granite cliffs and waterfalls. Highlights include El Capitan, Half Dome, Bridalveil Fall and Yosemite Falls. Overnight in Modesto.
Day 11
Arrival in San Francisco
Modesto - San Francisco. We depart early for San Francisco. On arrival, we enjoy a city tour before checking in to the hotel. This evening, you may choose to join an optional night tour.
Day 12
San Francisco or Napa Valley
Today is free to explore. You might ride a cable car to Fisherman’s Wharf, sample local specialities, or visit the sea lions at the marina.Views across the bay include Alcatraz Island, once a high-security prison. An optional excursion to Napa Valley offers the chance to visit renowned wineries.
Day 13
Monterey and Carmel Coastline
San Franciso - Monterey - Santa Barbara. We travel to the Monterey Peninsula, known for its coastal scenery.We visit Fisherman’s Wharf and Cannery Row, then continue to Carmel-by-the-Sea, a charming town with galleries and boutique shops. The journey continues through Paso Robles before an overnight stay along the Central Coast.
Day 14
California Coast to Los Angeles
Santa Barbara - Santa Monica - Los Angeles. We head south through the Santa Ynez Valley to Santa Barbara, where palm-lined promenades meet sandy beaches. On arrival in Los Angeles, we take an orientation tour including Hollywood, Beverly Hills and Century City. We continue to Santa Monica, the end point of historic Route 66, with time for an optional lunch by the pier before reaching the hotel.
Day 15
Flight to Hawaii
Los Angeles - Honolulu. You transfer independently to the airport for your flight to Hawaii. On arrival in Honolulu or Maui, we are welcomed with a traditional lei greeting before transferring to the hotel for a five-night stay.
Day 16
Hawaii at Leisure
Enjoy time at leisure in Hawaii. You can explore the islands or simply relax by the beach or pool.
Day 20
Departure
Honolulu - Los Angeles. We return to Los Angeles in the evening. Transfer to the airport for your onward flight.
