Korean Cultural and Historical Odyssey - 7 Days

Welcome to Korea! Upon your arrival in Seoul, you'll be transported to your hotel, setting the stage for an exciting journey ahead. This will provide you with some leisure time to unwind and begin exploring this vibrant city at your own pace. In the afternoon, we'll provide further details about the commencement of your tour, ensuring you're all set for the adventure that awaits. Please note: This tour may have travellers joining or departing at various points along the route, meaning group composition can change during the tour. Please also be aware that depending on group composition, guiding may be in additional languages as well as English.

On our second day, we'll set off early for the Cheorwon region, home to a fascinating section of the Demilitarized Zone (DMZ) that divides the two Koreas. Our exploration begins with the Second Tunnel, a clandestine passage dug by North Korean forces and uncovered in 1975. Next, we journey to the Cheorwon Peace Observatory, which provides sweeping views of the DMZ and a glimpse into the first villages across the North Korean border. Inside the observatory, you'll find a small museum dedicated to the Korean War's historical significance. Our tour continues with a stop at the desolate Woljeong-ri railway station, followed by a visit to the Baek Ma Battle Memorial. This memorial commemorates the bravery of a French UN battalion that participated in key battles. A delightful lunch is included. Later, we'll have a chance to visit a local producer of Makgeolli, a traditional Korean rice liquor, before returning to Seoul in the evening. It's important to bring your passport, as the DMZ is a military area and closures can occur without notice. If access is restricted, an alternative itinerary will be provided.

Back in Seoul, we'll explore City Hall – an impressive building with a wave-like structure. Across the way stands Deoksugung Palace, beautifully illuminated at night, showcasing Korea's unique blend of historical and modern elements. Our walk continues to Myeongdong, South Korea's largest hub for shopping and entertainment. Here, you can enjoy the vibrant atmosphere of "bright town." Dinner is included at a local eatery before we experience the city's modern and efficient metro for our return to the hotel. Overnight accommodation is arranged.

We'll begin our day with a five-hour exploration of Seoul, starting with a visit to Changdeokgung Palace. This UNESCO World Heritage Site is set within expansive parklands and encompasses a collection of historically significant palaces. Our journey continues as we pass through Bukchon Hanok Village, a charming area noted for its traditional Korean houses and rich history. Next, we'll delve into the War Memorial of Korea, a museum offering profound insights into the conflicts that have shaped the nation's history, particularly the Korean War, where troops from various countries served under the United Nations banner. A delicious lunch at a local restaurant is included in the itinerary.

In the afternoon, we'll proceed to Gangnam District, one of Seoul's most vibrant areas, renowned for its shopping and entertainment options. To round off the day, we'll visit the Lotte World Tower, a striking 550-metre-tall skyscraper. You'll have the freedom to ascend the tower for panoramic views (ticket not included) or explore the surrounding park and luxury shopping malls. We'll then return to the hotel, where you'll have some free time to enjoy the rest of the evening as you wish.

Today, we’ll explore the remarkable Gyeongbokgung Palace, a historic site with a legacy spanning over 600 years. If we time it right, we can witness the ceremonial changing of the guard. Following our visit, we’ll depart from Seoul and journey south to Suwon, once Korea's capital. Here, we’ll admire the impressive UNESCO World Heritage fortifications and visit Hwaseong Haenggung, the royal summer palace. Lunch is included. We then continue to Jeonju, renowned for its captivating historic centre—Hanok Village. You'll find yourself surrounded by charming traditional houses, unique shops, and art galleries.

We will set off from Jeonju to visit Sunchang Gochujang Village, nestled at the foot of Mount Amisan. This charming village, adorned with traditional hanok houses and their iconic courtyards filled with hang-a-ri clay pots, is renowned for its master artisans who craft gochujang – the famous Korean chilli paste – using age-old methods. You will have the opportunity to partake in a hands-on session to learn the art of making this iconic sauce.

Following this culinary adventure, our journey continues to Damyang, where we will explore the enchanting Juknokwon Bamboo Forest. Stroll along some of the country's most picturesque paths, ideal for meditation and enjoying the refreshing breeze. Amongst the verdant bamboo groves, you will also encounter an array of bamboo products, celebrated in locales such as the Bamboo Museum. After a leisurely walk, we’ll pause for lunch to savour a regional delicacy: rice cooked and served inside a bamboo stalk.

Surrounded by breathtaking mountain vistas, we will proceed to Haeinsa, an esteemed Buddhist temple and UNESCO World Heritage Site, established in 802. This sacred site houses the Tripitaka, the most complete collection of Buddhist scriptures, engraved on 80,000 wooden tablets. Our day concludes as we travel onward to Busan, South Korea’s dynamic second-largest city, where we will spend the night.

On the morning of Day 6, we leave Busan to explore Haedong Yonggung, a 14th-century Buddhist temple uniquely positioned by the coastline. Following our visit, we return to Busan to pay respects at the United Nations Memorial Cemetery, a solemn site honouring soldiers from various nations. We then make our way to South Korea’s largest fish market, located by Nampo Port, where a bustling atmosphere awaits. Lunch is included today, providing a taste of local flavours. After lunch, we’ll take a leisurely walk to Yongdusan Park, where you’ll find a striking 120-metre pagoda. As the day draws to a close, we board a modern high-speed train around 5:30 p.m., embarking on a three-hour journey back to Seoul. On arrival, we’ll ensure your smooth transfer to the hotel for the night.
