  • What should I know about currency and managing money in Kenya and Tanzania?

The local currency in Kenya is the Kenyan Shilling (KES) and in Tanzania is the Tanzanian Shilling (TSH). USD (notes newer than 2006) are the easiest foreign currency to exchange. Bring foreign currency as buying it locally can be expensive, and it is needed for border visas. Traveler's cheques are not recommended. Visa/Plus system cards are most widely accepted at ATMs, but bring a backup Mastercard if possible. Credit cards are accepted in major cities but not widely, often with a 5-10% fee. Power outages and ATMs running out of cash can occur, so do not rely solely on cards. It's advisable to have an emergency fund of at least USD $200.

  • Who will be leading the group on this tour?

Your group will be led by a CEO (Chief Experience Officer), along with certified safari guides/drivers and local guides.
  • Is tipping customary on this trip?

Always carry a basic first-aid kit and advise your tour leader of any medical conditions.

For Kenya, all travelers must apply for an Electronic Travel Authorisation (eTA) as of January 1st, 2024. For Tanzania, you will need to apply for an online visa, and specific host information is provided for the application. For Zanzibar, a new mandatory Inbound Travel Insurance will be introduced as of October 1st, 2024. A valid passport (minimum 6 months validity) is required for all countries, and a Yellow Fever certificate may also be required upon entry, so check with your local consulate and health expert.
