  You will walk through Quito's historical heart with a local guide to taste regional cacao and artisanal chocolate, visit the Intiñan Museum at the Equator line for interactive experiments, and explore an organic farm where you can learn about crops and plant an endemic tree to support island conservation. In the Galápagos, you'll sail to an uninhabited island to hike wild trails and snorkel alongside turtles, rays, and sharks. You'll also visit the Charles Darwin Research Station to see giant tortoises and learn about habitat protection, and discover volcanic origins and human history at the Gianny Arismendi Interpretation Center before hiking up to the Tijeretas lookout.

  Accommodation will be in hotels for all 7 nights of the tour.

• What meals are included in this trip?

  The trip includes 7 breakfasts and 4 lunches.

• What are the modes of transportation on this trip?

  Transportation will involve private vehicles, planes, ferries, speedboats, water taxis, and walking.

• How will we travel between the Galápagos Islands?

  A private speedboat is used to transfer between islands. This is a great way to spot wildlife en route. If you are prone to motion sickness, it is advisable to bring medication.

• Are local flights included in the cost of the trip?

  Yes, all local flights (such as the flight from Quito to Baltra/Galápagos and back) are included in the cost of your tour. The baggage allowance for domestic flights to/from the Galápagos is one piece of luggage per person (max 23 kg/50 lbs) plus one carry-on (max 10 kg/22 lbs).

• What is the maximum number of travelers on this tour?

  The maximum group size for this tour is 16 travelers.

• Is there an extra cost for solo travelers?

  Our group trips are designed for shared accommodation and do not involve a single supplement. Solo travelers joining group trips are paired in twin or multi-share accommodation with someone of the same sex. If you choose to purchase the 'My Own Room' option, you will receive your own single room for all night stops.

• What activities are optional on this trip?

  While most activities are included, on Day 7 in San Cristóbal Island, you will have a full free day. Optional excursions include a boat trip to Kicker Rock for snorkeling with sea turtles and sharks, or a San Cristóbal 360 tour circling the island's secluded bays.

• What are the tipping guidelines for this trip?

  Tipping service providers like waiters is customary in Latin America (approximately 10%). For drivers and local guides, recommendations range from $5-10 USD per day. Tipping your National Geographic Expedition Leader is also appreciated, with a guideline of $20-25 USD per person, per week.

• What should I know about currency and money while on this tour?

  The currency used in Ecuador is the US Dollar (USD). Credit cards, especially Visa, are useful for cash advances, though ATMs may not accept all international cards. It is recommended to bring a combination of USD cash (preferably denominations smaller than $100) and cards, and to have at least an additional $200 USD as an emergency fund.

  Inoculations may be required for the country visited; consult your travel doctor for up-to-date medical information. It's recommended to carry a First Aid kit and hand sanitizers. Please note that Quito is at a high altitude (over 8,000 feet/2,440 meters), and while most people adapt, everyone reacts differently to altitude.

  Travel insurance is compulsory. You must have medical coverage with a minimum of USD 200,000 for repatriation and emergency rescue. Coverage for personal liability, cancellation, curtailment, and loss of luggage and personal effects is strongly recommended.

  Laundry facilities are offered by some of the hotels for a charge. If you plan to do your own laundry, it is suggested to bring non-polluting/biodegradable soap.

  It's recommended to check your government's travel advice. Use a neck wallet or money belt for valuables and leave expensive jewelry at home. Many hotels offer safety deposit boxes. During free time, use good judgment, travel in small groups at night, and use taxis for night excursions. Water-based activities should only be participated in when accompanied by a guide; swimming and snorkeling are always at your own risk.
