Journey Through Poland's Historic Treasures - 8 Days

Welcome to your adventure! Upon arriving in Warsaw, we'll ensure a seamless transfer to your hotel, where you’ll have some leisure time to unwind and settle in. Later in the afternoon, you'll find detailed information about the commencement of your journey on the boards displayed at the hotel reception. Get ready to explore the vibrant capital of Poland, steeped in rich history and culture. Please note: This tour may have travellers joining or departing at various points along the route, meaning group composition can change during the tour. Today, we'll embark on a panoramic tour of Warsaw with a local guide. As the political and economic heart of Poland, Warsaw is home to nearly two million people and showcases an intriguing mix of contemporary architecture alongside carefully reconstructed historic buildings. Our first stop is the enchanting old town, where we'll wander through cobblestone streets, admire the stately Royal Palace, and see structures meticulously restored after their wartime destruction, now honoured as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. We'll then visit the iconic Palace of Culture, a striking skyscraper gifted by the Soviet Union, and reflect at the site of what was once Europe's largest Jewish ghetto. Our tour continues with a leisurely walk through Lazienki Park, home to the famous Chopin Monument. You'll have free time in the afternoon to explore at your own pace. Consider visiting local museums such as the National Museum or the Warsaw Rising Museum, or simply enjoy the vibrant atmosphere of the city centre with its many shops and activities. Please note that the city tour may operate as a standard tourist service, contingent upon the number of participants.

On our third day, we journey into the scenic, forested hills of Lesser Poland, known locally as Małopolska. Our first stop is Kielce, a lively town established in the 11th century. Here, you can admire the elegant town centre, which includes a cathedral, a bishop’s palace, and delightful gardens. There will be ample time to explore and enjoy a leisurely lunch amidst its captivating ambience.

We continue our journey along quieter roads, offering a true taste of village life and the region's picturesque landscapes. Our next destination is the charming town of Tarnow, founded in the 14th century. The town is known for its expansive central square and well-preserved medieval streets, showcasing Renaissance and Gothic architecture influenced by Polish, Jewish, and Hungarian cultures. Before the Second World War, a substantial portion of Tarnow's population was Jewish, and its ethnographic museum highlights the history of the Roma community, who faced persecution during the European conflict.

Our travels then take us onward to Krakow, where we arrive in the late afternoon. Once settled, we recommend taking a stroll around the vibrant Market Square to soak in its lively atmosphere.

In the morning, we’ll embark on a panoramic tour of Krakow with a knowledgeable local guide. Established in the seventh century, Krakow is the celebrated capital of Lesser Poland and home to a UNESCO World Heritage-listed Old Town. Our exploration will lead us through its captivating medieval streets, the expansive Market Square—one of the largest in Europe—and Wawel Hill, where the historic Wawel Castle, once the residence of Polish kings, stands. In the afternoon, you have time to explore further on your own. You might consider an optional excursion to the Wieliczka Salt Mines, another UNESCO World Heritage Site, renowned for its intricate carved galleries, subterranean chapels, and an extensive network of tunnels stretching over 300 kilometres. To conclude the day, we’ll enjoy a traditional local meal together.

After breakfast, we embark on a journey to Kalwaria Zebrzydowska, a serene town nestled in picturesque surroundings. It is home to a UNESCO World Heritage site, featuring a monastery and chapel complex known as the "Calvary," which attracts pilgrims from around the world. Our next stop is the charming wooden church in Barwałd Dolny, a testament to traditional architecture. We then continue to Wadowice, the birthplace of Karol Wojtyla, known as Pope John Paul II. You may choose to visit his museum house or the basilica where he was baptized, and there's also time for a leisurely walk and lunch in the town.

In the afternoon, we pay a solemn visit to Auschwitz, the former Nazi concentration camp where over a million lives were tragically lost during World War II. This site serves as a powerful memorial and museum and is also recognised as a UNESCO World Heritage site. We will explore Birkenau, the section where trains from all over Europe once arrived.

Our journey then takes us to Katowice, with a stop at the Nikiszowiec neighbourhood, known for its unique architecture and vibrant community life. This area, constructed in the early 20th century for miners and their families, is being considered for UNESCO World Heritage status. Once in Katowice, the bustling capital of Silesia, you’ll have free time to explore this modern and dynamic city, which serves as a major financial hub. You'll spend the night in Katowice, resting in preparation for the next leg of your adventure.

As we journey onward to Opole, you'll have the opportunity to relax with a coffee in this lively town, noted for its beautifully preserved old town and renowned National Festival of Polish Song. Departing Opole, we'll visit the Village Museum, an open-air exhibition that offers a glimpse into rural Polish life in the late 19th century. Admission is included, and you'll discover the region's historic wooden architecture, including mills, a church, and traditional farms. Our travels continue to Wroclaw, the capital of Lower Silesia, a city steeped in history from its founding in the 10th century and showcasing a tapestry of Polish, Czech, Austrian, and German influences. Wroclaw's old town, meticulously rebuilt following World War II, boasts one of the most charming squares in Poland and is famous for its intricate network of bridges and canals. In the afternoon, we'll enjoy a boat ride through the city's scenic waterways. You'll then have free time to explore and enjoy the vibrant local atmosphere at your leisure.

Today we'll venture through the enchanting landscapes of Greater Poland, arriving in its historic capital, Poznan. As one of Poland's oldest cities, Poznan boasts a vibrant old town, highlighted by the striking Market Square. Here, the eye-catching Town Hall is encircled by colourful Renaissance buildings, setting an inviting and lively scene. Don't miss the delightful spectacle in this square at noon, when two mechanical goats emerge from the Town Hall clock, carrying out a traditional head-butting display that dates back to the 16th century. After enjoying some leisurely time for lunch and exploration, we'll journey onward to Torun, a captivating Gothic city with a remarkable historic centre, which has earned recognition as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Known as the birthplace of the astronomer Copernicus, Torun offers the opportunity to explore his museum or house, should you wish. We'll end our day by travelling back to Warsaw, the bustling capital of Poland, where we’ll arrive in the evening, marking the close of another day of discovery.

Following breakfast, our journey reaches its conclusion, leaving you with unforgettable memories of your time exploring Poland.
